FIAT LINEA: Italian Elegance on Indian Roads

Fiat LINEA: Italian Elegance on Indian Roads

The first all new produce from the Fiat Auto - Tata Motors combine will burst forth into the national reckoning on the evening of January 14 when the wraps come off the very elegant Linea saloon. This is a classy new car which could be the proverbial cat amongst the pigeons in its class.

Right from the time it was unveiled to the automotive world in 2007, the Linea was pencilled in for manufacture in India and unlike the small cars Fiat has made in the past, this new mid-size saloon is dripping with curvy style and elegance. It is also the first spanking new automobile which is being built completely at Fiat India's all new manufacturing facility at Ranjangaon near Pune and which would be marketed by Tata Motors (Fiat's JV partner) through its all-India dealer network.

The Linea will be powered by the 1.3-litre Multijet engine which is already doing duty in one or the other in this country - under the bonnets of cars like the Suzuki Swift, the Tata Indica Vista and the Fiat Palio Stile. Much will depend on how effectively the new car is put together and also how receptive the sales and service networks are. This is also a big test for both Fiat and Tata Motors as they begin the onerous task of marketing the new car in a period of economic slowdown. How innovative and how pro-actively the effort is spearheaded on the marketing and distribution front will of course be key to the two partners but as Rajeev Dubey, President of Tata Motors' Passenger Car Business unit had mentioned, freshness of appeal which only new products can bring would certainly help the combine in these tough times.

A special all encompassing package on the Fiat Linea including a road test, full specifications and product details along with special videos of the drive and slideshows would be going live on the site at 6.00 p.m. on January 14. So prepare to log in then if you are a Fiat buff or just want to see if the Linea measures up.

I HAVE BEEN WATCHING ALL CARS ,ESPECIALLY FIAT CARS WITH AN INTEREST AS AN AUTO ENGINEER. THIS FIAT LINEA DIESEL IS SLIGHTLY OVERPRICED.THE DOUBTS ABOUT TATA SERVICE AND SERVICE COST FOR FIAT CARS IS HIGH.HAVING WORKED WITH THESE CARS FOR TEN YEARS I WILL STILL GO FOR THIS CAR. | Reply

The looks of Linea is very stunning, interior & exterior both. Engine capacity 1.4 L is a good choice. But Fiat has to assure smooth after sales service all over India. I obviously would want to do test drive as performance will be known only after test drive. | Reply

There are only a couple of car manufacturers in the world who can beat Fiat on the engine front. Look at Swift!!!. And if you get that engine in a car which looks like a Jaguar and comes for 9 lacs then the only thing which you'll ask for is a steady after sales service. Which sadly is a BIG QUESTION MARK about Fiat in India | Reply

LINEA IS STUNNING........BUT ITS 1.4 FIRE ENGINE IS BAD CHOICE. I AM SURE IT IS UNDER POWERED. FIAT IS GOING TO REPEAT (MISTAKE) UNO 1.0 LTR CARBURRETOR ENGINE HISTORY | Reply

This is an absolute stunner.Brilliant car in every aspect. Prices are also too good to be true!..The only worry is the after sales service and I think this time Fiat-Tata have worked hard on this front as well...Hope to buy this car soon!! | Reply

The FIAT Linea is an awesome car, shortchanged only by the lack of the T-Jet engine in it's line-up. FIAT India should have given the option of that engine for consumers who would like the Linea to be more of a driver's car just like Honda did with the previous model of the City - VTEC 100bHp engine alongwith the regular 77bHp one. If the T-Jet engine is introduced it would be foolish to even consider another car in the Linea segment. | Reply

I took a test drive in Linea Emotion Diesel at Chennai TAFE Reach Dealer. The car is simply superb. No more words to say. All features under the roof, Fiesta and City lacking in Automatic Climate control, Linea has it. Blue & Me is a good attractive feature to say in the Emotion PK variant. With onroad price of Rs.9.06L it posts a stiff competition to Fiesta. But Fiat and TATA should wake up regarding complaints about service. | Reply

I don't think this car will be success because of the step motherly treatment it gives to the fiat owners. They make great cars and then sleeps on it.... | Reply

I am using Fiat Petra D since last 3 years. Fantastic performance! No one can match the sturdyness , power and fuel efficiancywith 1.9 D. Now I would like to go for Linea but I am afraid of service of TATA & secondly availability & cost of spares. | Reply

I have driven an indigo 120000 Kms Good car Tata service THIRD CLASS. Letdown for their cars. Now I have purchased a Fabia just for the above reason. I would like tatas to fond out how many indigos and indicas are going around with clogged fuel pumps and no pick up. This can be set right just by getting the pump serviced by TVS. But the dealers just fiddle with it themselves and make an extra buck. This is to help owners all over India as I have found such cars all over the country | Reply

On the positive side, the car looks more expensive than it is, has a good build and appears to be technologically appealing. On the negative side, it's a bit too narrow for its length and is slightly underpowered. Plus, there is the worry about after sales service. I would think the car would sell on price rather than anything else. | Reply

I appreciate the quality from Fiat, I still use 10 years old Fiat UNO (D) tilll date, which still is running efficientltyin terms of milage and mantainance, i was waiting for new models frm FIat Punto or Linea, of which Linea has finally arrived, now i wait for the test drive and understand its engineering comparing with other car makers. . Linea looks great but hope it has driving pleasure and is fairly priced. Good Luck | Reply

Let us hope Linea does not repeat Indica story-when it was launched and it was full of problems. Tatas and their dealers just washed their hands and never cared for customers. | Reply

I am a Fiat buff, and I still use my Palio, which is as smooth and peppy as it was six years ago.But the truth is Fiat knows how to make world class cars, but they don't know market them in India. They must take a page out of the books of Suzuki or Huyndai. They need a seasaw change in their Marketing set up.Good luck Fiat. | Reply

I am a FIAT buff & still use the palio1.2 one of the best hatchback on road. I was waiting for LINEA & now it has arrived. I will definitely book it. Back up your sales with good after sales service & FIAT will turn around. Wish FIAT all the best. We know we get world class product from your stable at reasonable cost. | Reply

You may produce the best car in the world at cheapest price but it is of no use if it is not backed up by after sales service support. Fiat should concentrate on this aspect. | Reply
  • Cherag Katrak (12 January 2009 13:48)
The price will remain the main deciding factor for this car. If priced properly, it has the potential to turn around Fiat's fortunes in India. The multijet engine with 90 bhp is going to be the USP of this car. | Reply

I happened to test drive Fiat Linea yesterday 10.1.09. The drive was too good. I guess we need to say bye bye to Sx4,Logan & even Dzire if priced competantly. | Reply
