We find the answer to the perennial ‘kitna deti hai’ quandary by making a list of top 5 fuel efficient hatchbacks in India

1.) Chevrolet Beat:

Chevrolet Beat

The Chevrolet Beat is right at the top when talking about the most fuel efficient cars in India. In reality the Beat sports the 1.3-litre Multijet engine from Fiat, but the American manufacturer has smartly reduced a cylinder to make it a 1.0-litre 3-pot offering.  The five-speed manual gearbox sends 57.5PS of power and 150Nm of torque to the front wheels. Moreover, gear ratios of the 5-speed box are also short, thereby returning an incredible efficiency of 25.44kmpl.

2.) Maruti Suzuki Swift:

Maruti Suzuki Swift Facelift

Over the years, Maruti cars have been renowned for their reliability and efficiency. The Swift sports a 4-cylinder 1.3-litre Multijet engine and comes mated to a well sorted 5-speed gearbox. In this state of tune it makes 75PS and 190Nm. In the new Swift, Maruti claims that the efficiency has now been increase thanks to improved thermal efficiency and reduced frictional losses. The Swift returns an ARAI claimed efficiency of 25.2kmpl.

3.) Hyundai Grand i10:

Hyundai Grand i10

For the Grand i10 to make its way into this list was actually a pleasant surprise and that mainly considering that Hyundai isn’t quite known for its efficiency. The Grand i10 returns an ARAI claimed efficiency of 24kmpl. Under the hood, it comes with a 3-cylinder 1.2-litre oil burner that churns out 71PS and 160Nm. The car comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Now, Hyundai has very smartly tweaked the gear ratios such that it is not only easy to drive in the city but also pretty efficient.

Toyota launched the facelifted Etios Liva last year and even though it stands in fourth place on this list, it is quite impressive as its 1.4-litre 4-cylinder unit has the largest displacement engine of the list. That said, it makes just 67PS of power and at 170Nm its torque rating too is the lowest after the Chevrolet Beat. The ARAI claimed efficiency for the 2014 Toyota Etios Liva is 23.59kmpl.

5.) Maruti Suzuki Ritz:

Maruti Suzuki Ritz

The inclusion of the Ritz in this list doesn’t really come as a surprise especially considering that Maruti is known for its incredibly efficient engines. Moreover it is based on the same platform and uses the same engine and gearbox as the Swift and the Swift DZire. Despite that, it stands last in this list mainly for the fact that it hasn’t yet been updated along with the Swift that boasts of improved thermal efficiency. The Maruti Suzuki Swift boasts of an efficiency of 23.3kmpl.
