The University of Stuttgart have broken the 0-100kmph world record at a shattering 1.779 seconds making it faster than a Formula 1 car.

New 0-100kmph record

University of Stuttgart students have recorded a new best time in the 0-100 kmph (0-62 mph) acceleration. The university and its team, called the Green Team Formula Student managed to sprint from 0-100 in an amazing 1.779 seconds which is 0.006 seconds faster than the previous record. The result was achieved in a single seater Formula car that is powered by an electric motor.

The electric motor makes 136PS of peak power and has all wheel drive to propel it to a speed of 0-100kmph from a standstill in under the 2 second mark. According to the university students, the machine features four independent electric motors that drive all four wheels independently. The car also has a 6.62-kilowatts per hour battery package. The car weighs 160kg and has a power to weight ratio of 1.6kg/kw. Comparatively, the Bugatti Veyron SuperSport has a power to weight ratio of 2.08 kg/kW, while the Porsche 918 Spyder has 2.5 kg/kW.

Although the car has done the 0-100 kmph sprint, the record is still unofficial as it has to be confirmed by Guinness World Records in the coming weeks. Want to know how fast the car really is? Here is a list of the top 5 fastest accelerating production cars in the world
