Jaguar Land Rover is currently developing an advanced system dubbed ‘Mind Sense’ which will be able to detect whether the driver is stressed, distracted or not concentrating completely

Jaguar Land Rover develops Mind Sense system

We have been closing in on the future for a while now. We already have pocket computers, friendly robots, smart watches that was once thought as a distant dream. All that was missing was a system that will attempt to read the driver's brainwaves to determine if they're feeling tired or distracted and even whether they're daydreaming. Jaguar Land Rover has tapped in, in this arena as well. The company is developing a unique Mind Sense system with an aim to reduce the possibility of accidents by monitoring the driver’s activity.

Jaguar’s Mind Sense system is a research project which will attempt to the read driver’s brain waves and determine if the driver is focussed or distracted. If an issue is detected, the system could vibrate the steering wheel and pedals to alert them.  If they fail to respond, the system could take additional measures to ensure the driver's safety.

Advanced sensors placed into the drivers seat will monitor the heartbeat and breathing

In a statement, Wolfgang Epple, Head, JLR Research and Technology, said "We believe some of the technologies currently being used in aerospace and medicine could help improve road safety and enhance the driving experience. The car is becoming more intelligent and more able to utilize cutting-edge sensors. These research projects are investigating how we could exploit this for the benefit of our customers and other road users."

Another key piece of technology being developed by the carmaker will see advanced sensors placed into the driver’s seat to monitor both the heartbeat and breathing of the driver. These sensors would be able to detect the possible onset of a sudden illness (like a heart attack) and then prepare the vehicle accordingly.

Predictive Infotainment Screen

The British car marque is also creating a Predictive Infotainment Screen which tracks the driver’s hand movements and predicts the button they are going to push. As a result, occupants would be able to effectively push a button in mid-air.

The company had earlier revealed that it is working on a Pothole Alert system. The carmaker had also previewed its Bike Sense system which enables drivers to avoid collision with cyclists.
