Delhi is the most polluted city in the world

Talk of countries with the worst air pollution and many of us would vote for China. However, the truth is far from what we perceive. China is just a poster child for pollution. The air in Delhi is far worse than that in China, according to a study conducted by World Health Organisation (WHO).

This study was conducted in 1,600 cities across 91 countries. The findings revealed that the national capital had the highest concentration of particulate matters less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) form of air pollution, which is considered as being the most serious. This form of concentration consists of tiny particles that put people at additional risk of respiratory diseases and other health problems.

The National Green Tribunal pointed out that diesel is the prime source of air pollution in Delhi. Diesel fumes cause damage to the lungs and brain, thereby, increasing the risk of cancer. The Green Court stated that the situation in the Capital has become so alarming that medically people have been advised to leave Delhi.

A study conducted by the Kolkata-based Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI), found that 44 lakh school children in the capital are suffering from irreversible lung damage from the poisonous air. The air in Delhi is nearly twice as polluted as compared to that in Beijing, according to WHO. The study further reveals that India has 13 of the world’s most-polluted cities.

The Chinese national government offers generous electric-car incentives, while the city of Beijing routinely restricts which cars can drive on its streets, and has cut new-car registrations.

India, too, is trying its best to promote electric and hybrid vehicles. The government has launched the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme in the country in association with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Under this scheme, the centre will offer incentives on eco-friendly vehicles to promote its sales in the country.
