5 traffic rules Indians love to voilate

Not wearing seatbelt:

We have time to check in the mirror whether our hair is properly combed, the dress is looking good or not and even check our phone for any messages before starting to drive. But we don’t do a simple task of wearing seatbelt, the only time people mostly do is when they approach a traffic signal and they spot a cop standing there. It just takes few seconds to wear a seatbelt and wearing them can reduce the chance of traffic-related fatalities by a tremendous 45 per cent. This means almost half of the car related deaths would not have occurred had the occupants just spared a few seconds of their life and buckled up. Yet people come up with innovative excuses like it feels too tight and uncomfortable (well they can be adjusted for tension), it spoils my dress and so on but one should understand that a spoilt dress is better than a dead occupant. 

Jumping signals:

It seems that for most Indians, the traffic light is akin to a Christmas tree from a drag strip. The moment they see the signal turn yellow instead of slowing down they burrow the accelerator to make an exit and feel like Tom Cruise from Mission Impossible. All this just to save a few seconds or minutes of their precious life but they don’t understand that jumping signals especially at intersections is one of the major causes for car accidents and fatalities. One of the main reasons that we Indians jump signals is the fact that even if we are caught by a cop the fine is just Rs 100 and owing to this many people aren’t afraid of breaking the law. We hope the new Motor Vehicle Act addresses this issue though. 

Speeding:

Indian drivers are big fan boys of Hollywood flick “Fast and Furious” as speeding is another perennial problem. It is among the most vital reasons for car related accidents in India. Despite the speed limit signs on various highways and expressways one would hardly find any one sticking to it. Another common traffic offence along with speeding is lane cutting. Also the traffic police in our country aren’t properly equipped to catch these offenders as speed guns aren’t available with everyone.

Driving in the wrong direction:

You are cruising at 80kmph on the fast lane and suddenly you see a guy on a motorcycle ride towards you without an iota of fear while you have a minor panic attack. This scenario has been experienced by most of the drivers in our country. It’s not only in the hinterlands even in metro cities one will find people coming from the wrong direction or entering one way without respecting the rules. 

Not wearing helmet:

For a motorcyclist the risk to his life is multiplied many folds with respect to car drivers as he is exposed to the elements. Although wearing riding gear is the least bit of safety precaution a motorcyclist can take for the safety of his life that isn’t the case in our country. A motorcycle helmet is the single most significant safety gear a rider can wear. Yet many people avoid wearing helmets giving excuses that it’s uncomfortable, cause’s hair loss and excessive sweating. They fail to understand for a fact that few drops of sweat is always better than a pool of blood. Also most of them buy cheap roadside helmets worth Rs 200 which are totally useless in protecting the head and one should buy at least ISI certified helmets or better enough DOT, SNELL or ECE approved international made helmets which offers better protection.
