The Indian buyer is gradually starting to understand the benefits of owning an MPV. Yes, they might be a bit too large to handle in the city, but for that comfortable long drive with family, it is just what is needed. We make a list of the top 5 MPVs in India between Rs 6-18 lakh

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

1.) Maruti Suzuki Ertiga: At a starting price of around Rs 6 lakh the Maruti Susuki Ertiga is one of the most affordable MPVs on sale in India today. But that's just one of its many USPs. Although considerably longer than hatchbacks, it is smaller than most MPVs which makes it relatively easy to manage in the city as well. But it's interesting to note that despite its length it has decent enough space on the inside thanks to the 2,740mm wheelbase. The third row feels a little cramped though. And most importantly it comes with the peace of mind that car buyer associate with the Maruti brand. It sports a peppy 1.4-litre petrol unit that makes 95PS of power and 130Nm of torque, and the reliable Fiat sourced 1.3-litre engine that churns close to 90 horses and 200Nm. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga has an ARAI claimed efficiency of 16.02kmpl for the petrol variant and 20.77kmpl for the diesel.

Toyota Innova

2.) Toyota Innova: It comes only with a 2.5-litre Diesel engine. With a claimed figure of 12.99kmpl it isn't the most fuel efficient MPV out there. With price starting from Rs 12 lakh, the Toyota Innova is the most expensive available in the country, yet it is among the best selling MPVs in the country. And the reason for the success is that it offers one very important thing in plentiful, space. Depending on your requirements, you can either pick captain seats for the second row or a standard bench seat if you want an 8-seater. All the space inside has been made up thanks to its 4,585mm length and the massive 2,750mm wheelbase. Yes, it can get a bit too big to manage in traffic, but the comfort the Innova has on offer overshadows erything else.

Honda Mobilio

3.) Honda Mobilio: Honda’s entry into MPVs has in fact been an interesting one. With the Mobilio, Honda has tried to bridge the gap between the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Toyota Innova. The Mobilio is offered with both petrol and Diesel engine options, both of which have proven to be extremely reliable and refined. It comes with a 1,497cc unit that makes power of 118 horses and 145Nm. The petrol trim of the Mobilio returns 17.3kmpl. The diesel too gets a 1.5-litre engine but makes 100PS and 200Nm. The diesel trim flaunts an ARAI claimed efficiency of 24.2kmpl. Moreover, the Mobilio offers a fair bit of space for passengers on all the three rows and a lot of it is thanks to the adjustable middle row. And then, it is one of the few MPVs in the market that doesn't have a boxy design and looks pretty good too. If that still isn't enough and for those who like to go about in style, Honda has also brought in a sportier RS variant of the Mobilio.

4.) Renault Lodgy: Renault’s 1.5-litre diesel mill has been one of our favourites for quite sometime now. Not only is it fuel efficient, but is also fairly refined and peppy. The Lodgy is offered in the 85PS variant as well as the 110PS trim claiming an efficiency of 21.04kmpl and 19.98kmpl respectively. Moreover a class leading wheelbase of 2,810mm makes it extremely spacious on the inside too. Yes, it's design isn't the most appealing, but once you overlook that, it's all smooth sailing.

2015 Mahindra Xylo

5.) Mahindra Xylo: Mahindra vehicles are known for their rugged build quality, spacious cabin and easy maintenance, and the Mahindra Xylo is no exception either. But when compared to the other cars in this list, it’s engine isn't the most refined one out there. The lower variants come with the 2.2-litre mDI CRDe oil burner while the higher versions get the 2.5-litre mHawk engine. In the recent update, Mahindra has stiffened the suspension and improved the brakes which gives it better road manners but it still doesn't compare as well with the competition. But it still makes it pretty easily onto this list mainly for the space and comfort it has on the inside, and that's what this segment is about after all.
