Mercedes-Benz, which owns the Maybach brand has now introduced an even more elite version of this high end saloon, namely the Maybach Zeppelin recently. The Zeppelin is a revived brand name that graced Maybachs between 1928 and 1934. We take a look at the Zeppelin brand and the car that it was way back in the 1930s.
The Maybach Zeppelin was named after the company's famous production of zeppelin engines that were literally the epitome of powerful engines prior to and during World War I. Like the Maybachs of that era, the Zeppelins were enormous luxury vehicles that were also rather powerful for their time.
The first model was the DS7 which came fitted with a 7.0 litre, twelve cylinder 'V' engine that was able to develop a rather prestigious 150hp. The DS7 was available for just two years between 1928 and 1930 and the company soon followed up with the DS8.
The DS8 came fitted with an 8.0 litre V12 engine that was capable of making a startling 200 hp at just 3200 rpm. This made it one of the most powerful production cars in the world at that time and as expected it was rather opulent as well. Maybach made sure that the Zeppelin of the 1930s was the car to be seen in with its mammoth engine and exquisite interiors and styling.
Today the brand has been reborn, but the Zeppelin of the 1930s will always remain a legend.
