Twin Road Test: Maruti Suzuki Ritz

Abhishek Nigam takes on the petrol Ritz, while Muntaser Mirkar locks horns with the DDiS Ritz in this twin test!

Chervolet Aveo

Every car has a point - a reason behind its existence. Auto manufacturers don't pay millions for market research - both to the surveyees and the surveyors for nothing. They put in a detailed report on whether their proposed product will appeal to the target customer and at what name and what price point, what shape and in what colours. Placing a product and identifying with that customer base is what brings perspective to us automotive journalists. And then came along the Ritz.

Initially, when the Ritz was still known as the Splash everyone thought it would fill a very narrow niche between the A-Star and the Swift, but then Maruti launched the car and declared its pricing - bang in the middle of Swift territory. Now this threw us out of perspective for a bit - after all here was a brand new car unknown to the rest of the world that was priced more-or-less like the Swift and didn't do anything better or different than it - it looked as queer as some people thought the Swift does and sports the same oil burner as well. The confusion didn't last long though because staring us straight in the face was a clipping of all of the models in Maruti's Indian product portfolio - the 800, Alto, Wagon R, Zen Estilo, A Star, etc.

Now Maruti is a different kind of manufacturer than most others you see in the country - they have no less than five small cars that they sell at prices extremely close to each other.

The Swift till now, was elusive to that influence - which is where the Ritz fits in. Fresher, built better and armed with a brand new petrol engine, the Ritz suddenly makes perfect sense now, though it didn't at first. The Swift has been the market leader for a long time as far as big hatchbacks are concerned and the Ritz has just been recruited to consolidate Maruti's onslaught out there. But will the cute lil’ Ritz cut it as well as the Swift did? Let's find out.

I am owning a Ritz for the last 4 months and can confidently suggest you to go for it! Previously, when Ritz was not launched my choice was Swift. But,after having numerous test drives in both the cars,I found that Ritz is much betterr in interior space-utilization,the interior design and part quality and boot-space.The car also a better one to drive because of its commading driver's postion, stability at high speeds etc. With all theseboth Ritz | Reply

I have no hesitation in recommending the Swift. I am a not so proud owner of the Ritz zxi . My sister owns a Swift which I drive around a fair bit. The Swift is more stable and offers a more comfortable ride. The Ritz throws you around a bit as sways and gives you a bumpy ride. | Reply

Check the Air presure on four tyres. It should be 29-30 psi instead of what is said on manual. you will have a smooth ride

hello ,i know this car appears to be bad frm rear at first glance but guys think out of the box n ull find it actually looks better.. take pride u drive something different.. check the other cars in this segment ull find none have a very appealing or DIFFERENT rear look.. punto,i20, u-va, etc have normal and conventional rear looks.. seen from the side and observing carefully u would notice the design is somewhat like an arrowhead which is one of the best examples of a streamlined design..ps: this is what i feel maybe you wouldnt agree but i really like the looks of the car. | Reply
Diganta Gogoi (20 February 2010 09:47) Reply to akshay khole
I appreciate your calibre to come out of the conventional design mania. As on today the Ritz is a design bench mark.If the Chevy Beat can beat the design race...the Ritz is a front runner.Congrats for your bold | Reply
Sourav (03 February 2010 12:53) Reply to akshay khole
I fully agree with you.We all have to start thinking out of the box,and accept any change that comes our way.Ritz has excellent looks, only that the rear look is unconventional,so people take time to get used to it.But,this doesn't mean that it is ugly in any way.Infact its far more contemperory than the cars with conventional looks like i20,UVA,Punto,which look nice at present because of regular looks, but become very usual looking vehicles after few years, due to the lack of any innovative approach in their designing.Making comments about looks ,is very easy but designing a car which is almost perfect in all the aspects (like Ritz) is not a common man's job! | Reply

Reply to Hussain,Hi Hussain,I won't get angry with what you have said, rather I would suggest you to have a look at Ritz with a postive mindset and take a test drive. You would definitely get convinced with what we all are saying. And you know,Its not a big deal in saying good about something that we own, instead the better deal is to acknowledge a 'Good thing' that comes our way (whether we own it/not).. :) | Reply

I have a Ritz Diesel (VDI) and find it very comfortable to drive both in city and on highways. Have had it for 3.5 months and have done 9000 odd KMs. Get 18 in city and 20 on highway. Great value for money and it's a Maruti meaning service is just around the corner.Seats 5 adults comfortably.Though I still don't understand why some of the features available on the Zxi are not available on the VDI. Why, does Maruti think that diesel drivers don't need airbags, systems, rear wipers etc. Maruti should at least launch a ZDi version. | Reply

I bought a new Ritz couple of weeks back, it's excellent and I feel great for my choice. It gives 19 km/pl on high way and 16/pl in city with AC. The smoothness of the engine is better than the swift or others in the class. With full load the performance of the engine is excellent, the shift from 2-3 is much better than swift. The high seating position gives you great comfort while driving. The car is very spacious and excellent for elders to feel comfortable. | Reply

ritz is better than i20, better torque at low rpm, ideal for city driving. In i20 diesel the turbo comes in late so you have to press the clutch a bit and rev the engine to get a pick up consuming precious fuel !!! I have driven the Ritz for over 3000 kms, every body in the car goes off to sleep except me ( driver duty) car is super smooth , no noise even at 80-90 kms/hr , no rattles, no jerks etc. Fuel effecient 22 kms /ltr with ac on highway, (and the 2nd service is not yet done.) the average is bound to go up....Car is roomy inside, air conditioning is super effecient, I never had to go above the 1 level .this is the best hatch back value for money!! | Reply

Dear Dr.Rajiv Goyal, I am not sure of the noise element. However, this might smoothen once you've travelled atleast 2000kms, long journey. average in your petrol version, with A/C should be 15kmpl on city roads, and 18kmpl on highways!!. without A/C the avg should even improve. About the noise you've mentioned I am a bit perplexed !! I am not aware.... | Reply

Dear Dr. Goyal,Since you've driving since June 09, you know more of this car. However, I got one good advice. Donot increase the speed initially above 60kmph. that will smoothen the engine and help in noise reduction..Else long drive without A/C would be ideal to fix this problem. Once your first service is done, the mileage will certainly improve and the noise will vanish ???!!! Pl. keep us posted.... | Reply

Maruti always confuses basic safety with luxary. For instance, in Ritz Lxi, the company has not provided rear seat headrests which are provided in Vxi/Zxi (costs INR 45,000 more on road (delhi). Also, the shape of the rear seat is like a bench without any lumber support. I wonder the design/marketing team's idea to trim down the variant overlooking safety of passengers. The Lxi vehicle is also purchased by elder people who cannot drive and generally keep a driver. Not providing rear seat headrests is a mark of disrespect. | Reply

I test drove both Ritz Diesel and petrol models of Ritz. In case of Diesel version, I felt as if I was driving a Tata 407. The steering wheel was prety hard and the car gave a bumpy ride on the potholes with a lot of sounds. Petro version was smother but both the cars din't give me aa feeling of a new car. Fuel meter is too asmall to be noticed. The RPM meter stands on the dashboard like a medal in a child's neck. I really wonder why is everyone's raving about Ritz | Reply

There might have been some problem with the diesel-demo car which were driving.I didn't feel the same! but, ofcourse Petrol version of Ritz has a better drivability and refinement of engine.Although Ritz offers nothing unique in terms of its interior quality/instrument cluster, but when you consider the overall package, the utilization of space inside, refinement, mileage and stability of the car,its an extermely good product in comparison to the recently launched cars. The overall value for money feeling is what everybody is raving about! | Reply

Outstanding in the Ritz in the price range are space, roomy feeling, road presence, engine refinement, and of course maruti service. The very thought of those other cars with tiny rear window openings is suffocating!
hp (09 November 2009 12:59) Reply to biju
I agree with saurav too. Ritz makes a lot of sense, esp the VXi, for its price. Refinement, short wheel base for those tight parking spots, fresh look, street presence and roominess. The mere thoughts of those other cars with narrow rear windows suffocate me already!

  • T V Bhavadas (30 October 2009 14:11)
The Ritz exterior is some thing novel. M S is very bold in introducing the peculior shaped vehicle in India, It has got its own beauty and attraction.  Nilesh CHOGLE (29 December 2009 01:14) Reply to Rahul
Manza, is a sedan, and its different from Ritz, in that sense. If you are comparing Ritz with the Manza, there will be minimal comparison. Ritz, is meant for those who love hatchbacks and have parking issues. Manza, on the other hand is spacious, gives mileage of around 20kmph, but again, all TATA cars have a peculier problem, that you need to service them often. Consider both cars differently !!!Far as Ritz VDi is concerned, it is equally good as Zxi/VxI. The car will be absolutely smooth, once it crosses 2000kms. | Reply

hii what is wrong with the ritz' look?it is the hi-tech design to reuce the air resistance. you know, with that backside curve it's getting extra push as per the famous bernoul's law. | Reply

What great difference that makes to the mileage and it's performane? People like you facinates to big scientific terms and buzz words and companies like this keeps fooling you, and you won't even understand what is going on. | Reply

What does this law says about effects of 'Extra push' during the time of braking?? still provide the push or is there some other law incorporated which acts on the front and helps stop the car | Reply
hmingpuia (06 November 2009 09:53) Reply to Ramish
its only once in a while that we need to brake really hard. maybe thats why no law is required to aid braking
biju (07 November 2009 00:39) Reply to Ramish
ritz bears 3D curve at the back side. put all the glasses and push the pedal and u'll get milage not less than 20 km/lt. the air, flowing smooth to back, suddenly raise velocity due to that curves, when the presure is reduced, air rushes to back fom sides towards speeding direction, giving the car an extra push
Ramamurthy (24 December 2009 18:24) Reply to Ramish
The best curvature is that of aerofoil. OK. It is a scientific jargon, but if you see fish, dolphins etc their shapes help to reduce the drag / friction. I some how feel that the shape of Santro , for example, looks balanced and pleasing.

I have purchased a Ritz Vxi one month back. My previous card was Alto. I find it a pleasure to drive. One does not even notice whether the engine is on or off. Absolutely smooth drive. The gear shift could have been made a bit more smooth because I find that some effort is required to change gears unlike my 6 year old Alto whose gear shift was absolutely smooth. One major point I would like to make is that there is a BIG blind spot on the right side near the right side mirror. Sometimes while turning right, you need to put your head close to the window to get a clear view. This could have been avoided while designing the body. Otherwise its a great car. I am getting a mileage of only 12kmpl, but that is understandable as it is a brand new car. | Reply

Hi guys,Im a hatchback freak n after Skoda Fabia 1.4, Ritz Vxi is the best hatchback India has been offered by her automakers. With its new stylish design(if not classic),nice E10-ready 85 bhp engine and beautiful in-class interiors,I think Maruti has hit a bullseye with Ritz.My Ritz is giving me a mileage of about 16kmpl in city. Comparing it with one of my other cars,Hyundai i20, I find Ritz sturdier nd more powerfull. i20's Kappa engine has been highly over-rated and doesn't impress much. The only area where i20 really ' catches i ' is its looks.AND I have something to say to those who don't like Ritz' exteriors, " just come out of your old-school-design closet and reset your gamut for something new",in short " bade ho jao bachche". | Reply

Dear Akhil Kapoor,Its nice to hear all this about Ritz.In reality, I liked the shape itself. May not be as impressive at first, like an A-Star, I10,I20, but certainly the looks, both front and back are quite admirable.Further its a firm car and holds the ground well. What I like the most is the Taco meter and Integrated Stereo System.what's wrong in the flat rear screen!! When Santro LE, etc. was first launched, peopled called it weared shape. I used the 2000 model of Santro LE for 10 years , and was still going great guns. So will the RITZ, any version!! I have done a detailed study and both variants are good. By the way a tall person has long legs and not long upper waistline portion. Apart from that 1.2 ltr K-Series engine there is nothing that one can rate as "Excellent" in Ritz. Whats the use of power ad all that top speed when you are not going to drive (confidently) your Ritz on motorway. And looks...does anyone want to comment on that?
