Buying a Car ? Get Best Deal

Toyota's new 2010 Land Cruiser Prado is an able urban crawler as well as a potent off-roader. Varad More gets behind the wheel of this monster that completes Toyota's SUV portfolio in India

Toyota's revered Land Cruiser brand of off-road vehicles has been religiously serving for over five decades across various markets. What makes the Land Cruiser series so successful the world over are its supremely engineered mechanicals and its ability to conquer harsh terrain with conviction and of course, Toyota's legendary reliability. But while the big brawny Land Cruiser V8 is an earth-shattering monster, its younger sibling, the Land Cruiser Prado is more of a gentle giant easily tamable for urban use along with being highly competent for some severe off-roading.

Earlier generation Prado's plain Jane looks have been trashed for a complete refurbished design with flowy yet belligerent lines and protruding front and rear fenders on the new 2010 Land Cruiser Prado highlighting the new-found vigour that was so largely missing in its predecessor. Based on a design language that Toyota calls as 'Intelligent & Modern', the car endorses the don't-mess-with-me stance of an SUV from outside but packs in incredible amount of space and spoiling interiors. The beige coloured leather interiors with bits of wood-like trim on the inside is very contemporary and modern-day, complimenting Prado's new looks and presenting the car with an upmarket feel unlike its predecessor that lacked stylish interiors.

The new Prado is a lot about smart-packaging and high-tech gadgetry for improved comfort and convenience of the occupants. For instance, the world?s first flush-with-floor mechanism of the third-row seats is automatically actuated by a simple touch of a button which makes the rear bench cleverly fold down for flat storage space. The driver and the co-passenger are blessed with exceptional amount of space for movement and even with the seats pulled back all the way - there is enough legroom for the middle bench to be comfortably seated. Toyota has made sure that even under full occupancy - none of the occupants feel cramped.

Addition to the now-common features in this segment like keyless entry system, steering-wheel mounted controls, cruise control, is the new auto-leveling projector headlights with washer, 3-zone Automatic climate control and a more advanced Park Assist system with front and rear sensors as well as a rear camera for added convenience. Equipment wise the Prado will give most of its competitors a good run for their money as minor improvements and small yet significant features go a long way in enriching the overall ownership experience.

Built to traverse through the urban jungle with just as much flair and ease as it will conquer the wild and harsh terrain, the new Prado is powered by Toyota's all-new D-4D 3.0 litre Common Rail Direct Injection turbocharged diesel motor that is currently serving the Fortuner. Albeit, under the hood of Land Cruiser Prado the diesel powerplant is differently tuned and configured to suit the Prado's bigger dimensions and a 2400kg kerb weight. The motor pumps out 173PS of power and 410Nm of torque, which is adequate for cruising around the city and occasional highway bouts but the engine feels sluggish and strained to haul this behemoth with urgency as was proved in our tests where the car took 18 seconds to reach 100km/h from a standstill. However for off-roading, the full-time 4x4 drive coupled with decent power and torque presents the Prado with enough strength to seize arduous surfaces and take on inclines.

why not take a porsche cayenne. in basic speification, it is only 4 lacs more than prado. its a way better car, and its a porsche. performance wise, the cayenne is much better. handling wise, its a porsche. we all know what that means. and the porsche is a much more advanced car overall. and it has the brand value. sit in the cayenne and then sit in the prado. ull feel like u moved from a 5-star hotel to a village. and 40 lacs for a prado. too much.comapre the safety point of view. the cayenne or any other german suv in the same price range, like vw touareg, mercedes m-class, etc have at least 8-10 airbags. prado has 4 in full specification, 2 in basic. in some countries it has 1. the japanese skimp on safety when making their cars, germans dont. also look at the specifications. a basic model german suv has way more options than a basic model prado. i feel other worthy contenders are the land rover dscovery 4 as well. look up the specs, very similar off - road. on the road, i think there is no comparison as the european cars are way better because of their advanced construction. now, look at 40 lacs for a vehicle thats so agricultural??? no doubt, it looks macho. but tehre are better cars around. toyota is cheating the indian market with teh prado.. | Reply

Useless review. When talking about a true SUV, all the factors are not reported. It appears that the review has been written by a PR executive at Toyota or their dealers.Where are the figures for Ground Clearance, Slope approach angle, departure angle, the wheel-base, water fordability and all other such features which are a must for any true off-roader. | Reply

Price is the only element where Toyota is lagging (mass sale) in India so far for this model. Its a big foul if someone comparing a PRADO with Safaris / Scorpios. Down here in Qatar you could buy one for 15LA INR, but at the same time you could buy a HUMMER H3 for as low as INR 13LA. The heavy import tax in India makes this car a dream for upper middle class lads. POOR FATE at least until Toyota starts the production. | Reply

It's macho and mega in stucture perhaps a male with huge biceps and six-pack abbs. It's tyres are scary and they look like they can run over any thing that comes in its way but a little pricey for many people. | Reply

That's why all are expressing their temper here in one or the other form. Legendry doesn't mean, you take the people for granted and sqeeze them badly. Whatever the quality Toyota may offer, the price is tooooooooo much for the stuff what you get in return. | Reply

Toyota Innova has got tendency of getting the rear axel breakdown badly on rough patches and at higher speeds. There are many incidents as known to me. But in India nobody takes it seriously as in US. | Reply

God damn fools!! You need to know a litle politics and economics before blurting out such stupidity. Toyota and Honda have almost captured US market. Their own products are literally being destroyed by German and Japanese brands. Everyone knows what had happened to Chevy - it is dying. Quite naturally, US wanna blacklist Japanese firms. They know pretty well that Ford and Gm in US are losing grounds against Toyota. Then about Prado - Whether Indian fools buy or not, Prado is the no.1 in SUV in Middle East. prado is not for Indians. Why grumbling, ranting and raving over that? Who the hell are you? What the hell you know about American marketing strategies and their notorious black laws?? Learn if you do not know. Americans are now ruminating over their past glory of Detroit - Gone are those days. Toyota, Honda and Nissan - why even the new Suzuki Kizashi are proving their mettle across the globe. Foolish frogs in the well are very keen on making their absurd notions known without having any knowledge of Business, Finance and Politics.

as long as people are gullible suckers for their " Image " in society they compromise on " Sound economic and Quality Parameters " of World class products. So what if there are a million neighbours starving for One Square Meal a Day, they still want to burn money nonsensically | Reply

maybe land cruiser's named as fortuner in pak or fortuner must be having better specifications than the land criuser prado | Reply
prady (21 March 2010 14:57) Reply to Agam
That's real man, It's the same vehicle and specifications which is available in India and the fortuner is the one which costs lesser version to the Indian one.(it's same 2.7 petrol available in thailand and costs less than the available to the indian 3.0 litre d-4D engine) but fortuner costs bomb (73 lakhs) in pak while prado(65 lakhs) costs a bomb here. I think Toyota charges not on the basis of cost and profit, but on the basis of necessity and opportunity to squeeze the customers. Not fair in long run for an reliable company. | Reply

In dubai i had the old prado which i drove for around 50000km and presently driving the new land cruiser which i have driven around 100000km and i can vouch for their reliability.THE PRADO THOUGH EXPENSIVE WILL LAST YOU FOR MANY YEARS.Also the parts may be expensive in india but apart from oil filters/air filters you may not need anything.GO FOR IT. | Reply

Are you advising sell my apartment for the sake of reliability? Do you know what is meant by reliability? It is not only product, it also my faith in that company.why is that bias for the Indian money. Are we crazy about these cheap cheating companies who says paying more always get you quality....?? but this guy got Paying less got is quality in Soudi....? At last we are the biggest idiots who end up in draining our money for these poisonous toys which are not reliable worth we paid for. | Reply

The second picture regarding the engine under the hood makes me think that this a rip off car for 50 lacs. The engine seems to be the one from 1990s. After all in a third world slum country like India where people have zero knowledge about cars its easy to sell a piece of junk like this with a refurbished name brand. The model is derived from Toyota Highlander with minor modifications and renamed as Land Cruiser "Prado" so that the gullible indians have a feel of driving actual "The Land Cruiser". | Reply

you are right the pricing should be made affordable to the indian masses if they want to sell considerably good numbers in India , see how smartly Mahindra created a niche for itself by launching scorpio , they gave all the rest of the companies a run for their money , I think companies should give value for money in their offerings else they will have less or no sales at all , India is a price sensitive and and intelligent buyers market no Indian is a fool , see how toyotas fortuner flopped so badly , even tatas and others should learn from Mahindras | Reply

i fully agree with Sandesh, most car companies cheat indian buyers, but people with big bucks dont mind that. Even car like Honda Jazz with all local components cost Rs 5.3lac in UK and in india it costs Rs 2lac more. Clearly, they want to cheat the richer indian class who can afford these stupid pricing. For normal middle class only TATA and Suzuki are the brands with really care. I seriously mean that. These brands really care. They have given us world class cars and prices are at par with other countries. Even fortuner is priced at about rs 15lac in philipines and thailand with same kind of indian tax structure, but here because of low competition, the price is 20 lac and wait is 1 years, one another toy to rich brats who love to show off. Even the prices of Gernman cars are at par with other nations after adding duty, these card have niche market and they too offer value for money. But in the end Thumbs up to Tata and Suzuki and big thumbs down to Honda and Toyota. | Reply
