Tata Nano: The promise of price
"A promise is a promise," stated Ratan Tata at the unveiling of the Nano at Auto Expo in January 2008 and it remains to be seen if the present economic downturn will enable him to hold on to this. No one will crib should it be revised given steel prices have zoomed 40 per cent in the last six months and the follies of politicos has necessitated a (costly) change of facility.
The Nano will be available in three trim versions from April. The basic version is known as the Nano with no prefixes or suffixes. Next up is the Nano CX which comes with HVAC and central locking while the top of the line Nano LX adds power windows to the front doors. The top of the line version is available only in BS III specifications while the others are BS II and BS III compliant. All versions comes with an 18-month 24,000 km warranty and the biggest challenge would be, if you are in the market for one, to be immensely lucky that the gods smile on you and Tata Motors computerji locks in your number earlier than others. If you are Tata Motors, the challenge would be to keep production lines humming and get the Nano rolling out of Pantnagar, Pune or wherever to ensure that more and more enjoy the benefits of motoring. And if you are the government, do the most logical thing and set up better town planning and urban thoroughfares while also putting tax-payers money where its mouth is in terms of better driver training and licensing procedures. Yes you are right, big revolutions start with small worthwhile ideas. Tata Motors has just proved this with the Nano.
