Tata Nano: Performance
And yes speaking of performance, the car is no slouch but isn't a rocketship either. Given that median speeds in India are very low, the Nano has ample poke from its motor to run alongside a BMW in sketchy traffic clearly annoying the Bavarian bruiser but then that is the objective, of running along as easily in the city as it is painful for the BMW to hold its horses in check. Tata Motors claims a 0-60 km/h acceleration time of 8.0 seconds and with our electronic test gear strapped on we got the car to record a time of 9.97 seconds.
It rolls along without protest as the throttle pedal is worked provided it is in the right cog and with the electronics taking care to ensure there is no over-revving possible you automatically (idiot-proof this trait) shift up and continue motoring in the manner the Nano was designed for. In fact up to 80km/h, the Nano is quicker than the Maruti 800 Duo and that too by giving away a cylinder and 176cc plus an additional cog in the transmission. The car has been sensibly pegged to a top speed of 105km/h thanks to an electronic restrictor and sometimes when on downhill sections you are in the mood to go flat out the car might lurch into forbidden territory but the clever momma lurking in the black box electronically cuts out sparks and fuel to make you understand that its time to cool down. We experienced both, the 105km/h top speed as well as electronic momma butting in. Clever or common sense, it works well whichever way you tend to look at it. View :Tata Nano Special Coverage
