Tata Indigo Manza: First Drive

Test Drive Tata Manza
Manza_main

Sleekly styled, very well built and turned out with a poise and presence which is right up there, the new multi-faceted Indigo Manza is sure to stir up the hornet's nest which is the present day C-segment says Adil Jal Darukhanawala after an exclusive first drive

If ever one needs reminding as to how effectively Tata Motors has progressed as a car maker, one only needs to sense, see and experience its newest products. From the time the Indica Vista appeared on our roads, the going seems to have changed completely. The ground-breaking Nano seemed to indicate a whole new paradigm shift for the automotive world but Tata Motors didn't seem eager to step off the throttle pedal. And while a few yet seem to look at the Indian firm somewhat disparagingly, it is this determined drive which is so very indicative of an automobile firm eager to stand up and be counted in its peer group.

Manza_main2

The latest Indigo Manza sedan is yet more proof of the above. And lest someone suggest that it is but an Indica Vista with a boot, it would be doing India's largest indigenous car maker and its latest product a huge disservice. The Indigo Manza is an all new sedan which like its Indo-Italian stablemate - the Fiat Linea, oozes grace and elegance and doesn't look at all as if the boot has been grafted on in a tacky manner.

If anything, the Indigo Manza (Manza supposedly means a little steer or a beautiful girl, chose what you want to believe), comes across as probably one of the best looking cars in a segment full of high profile machines strong on style and turnout. The Fiat Linea we have already mentioned but in the C-segment the Manza has also to battle the likes of the Honda City, the Ford Fiesta, the Hyundai Verna, the Chevy Aveo and the Suzuki Swift D?Zire and in the battle for making the best first impression, the Tata product does have its nose ahead.

I bought a Indigo Manza Aura Safire on 31 aug 10. It is a good car. At present i am getting a milage of 8-9 km/lt in city drive. They told me that milage will improve to 14. There is a red led light flickering when the car is off condition always. They told me this is signal of immobiliser. Is any one notice pl confirm. | Reply

I have purchsed TATA MANZA ( AURA)-Quadrajet. To tell you frankly, I am happy with its performace. One things that is odd is the fuel economy. I have been getting an average of 8-10 Km/ltr under city condition. On highway its around 18-20 km/lts. Too much of diiference. A/C is good. Some problem with lightening, which I expect to get it rectified during first service | Reply

om shah (26 July 2010 21:23) Reply to Mohd Nasir Iqbal
u must have been drvg small car. To make car more aerodynamic and increase fuel efficiency , the wind screen is given max possibl angle, in big car thus the wind screen lower part moves forward and as u used to small car u feel it is obstructing view, u will get used to it, there is no design defect it is perfect and gives v good mileage if u drive it sensibly | Reply

hi all.iam prashant from borivalli mumbai and i travel to bandra everyday for my office and back.so it makes abt 38 kms daily and i self drive.however during weekends i drive outside mumbai to pune, lonavla, nasik, malshej ghats etc etc.I currently own a 2004 model FORD Ikon 1.6 nxt ZXI..and i have maintioaned it properly..and now i want to sell it of and buy a new car.i am looking at options like Manza Petrol or Hyndai accentor swift dzire petrol or at the most Ford Fiesta.I have recently seen a friend of mine in pune bought a new indigo manza petrol and he says it is indeed a very good spacious car but two things he complains of is 1st its ac is not very strong as it shud be,2nd the engines makes lil more sound than a dzire besides ofcourse TATA service seems to be pathetic.Iam not bothered abt the mileage as i anyways get 7-8 kmpl with ac on with my current ford ikon..so anything above that is bonus for me.Any owner of Manza who has driven more than 20k kms may pls advice abt its pros and cons of the car in higways and cities.Detailed anaylysis and feedback wud be heavily appreciated. | Reply

I own a Manza and stay at Borivali Raheja apts. I drive all the way to town and more often than not with AC. Have no problems with my car and have owned it for close to 7 motnhs now.And have driven 24k KM till today. Service is decent similar on the lines of Ford/Hyundai.Maruti service is better but my wife has started facingproblems with her Dzire..The famous "Dzire" boot rattle noise! Maruti service guys are cluless and have been trying to give some lame reason for this too. So service in India is still at the Car Co's discrition and i think you cannot expect a lot from any manufacture these days. | Reply

arent the tires really small for the body? A friend of mine bought a Manza and within 3000 km the tires are almost bald!! and I do appreciate and encourage Indian Cars, but when will they make better engineering? I somehow get a bistandard product feeling! and Vista is a Punto Copy and linea copy is Manza! Tata just tries to betterify the features of the car they try to copy but fail to match the class and technology! | Reply

Its depends upon you , whether you want more of a comfortable ride and more space , or more resale value. Swift no doubt had better resale ,but you get a comfort of a luxury car in Manza. Both the cars have the same engine , moreover Swift has the ugliest boot. Manza is more classier ,but swift Dzire is more peppy. Gear ratio of Manza is refines for better drivability ,whereas Dzire for better pickup. Manza has more features as compared to Swift ,though plastic quality of swift is better than Manza. | Reply

Yesterday I have booked a AURA ABS petrol. Before that I had checked 1) Grande Punto : Pros : Look, Built (probably the sturdiest car at that segment). Easy to drive.Cons : Rear seat leg room. As I am a six feater.2) I 20 : Another good car. Bigger than Punto. Great interior. Easy to drive. But costlier. 3) Fiat Figo : A value for money car. Much cheaper than i 20. But I was not very sure about their service and spare part cost. Figo will be a very successful car. 4) Tata Manza Aura ABS petrol: Great car. Great interior and very easy to drive. But I am not very sure about the mileage. Salesperson is calming around 12 Km/Lit with AC. on at city condition. No discount. But some freebies. I sincerely hope that I have made a right choice. | Reply

Hi All,I brought my Tata Indigo Manza car in Feb 27th AURA ABS Diesel in Hyderabad Concord Motors,.Good about Car: Fully loaded, fuel consumption is good, AC is good, seat belt Alarm good option, Door open indicator, Built in Audio system, inertial space all are good and excellent. Breaking system is awesome. View visibility is very nice and adjustable Driving seat is too good, Bluetooth is rocking. It has both USB and AUX option. Talks about Drawbacks in the car: Fuel to be empty is not working correctly, when I asked show room guy, he also don’t know how to set correctly. I filled the fuel in full tank , it shows me fuel to be empty in just 194 km , when I went small long drive about 80 km , then it changed to 330 from 194. Blue tooth : I connect Bluetooth using my mobile LG Incite 180 , first time it works , then my mobile went not reachable , again I restarted my mobile and tried , again the same problem , when I asked showroom person , no use. Steering: It is Power steering with hydraulic, it is not as good as power steering with power one, in highways it is good but city roads not that good. Finally I can say one word who is interested to buy this car is, it is work for amount what we are paying, and technology wise very sound. When you compared to Swift Dezire diesel VDI or ZDI with MANZA, my vote Is for MANZA, for price, Features and Technologies wise. I am driving Swift since 1 yearStill I haven’t checked exactly how much mileage is coming per liter diesel in city roads. | Reply

Powerful braking [4 disc -brakes]. I own Aura disel. Travelling at a speed of 125Km/hr and stopping suddenly is very crucial in most of the other vehicles. But, Manza suprised me. I say toyota Inova will not even come close to its braking. The vehicle should not move more that 1 feet once sudden brakes is applied. I came across such an experience in an express highway[Bang - Mysore]. Many thanks to its braking system else, we all would have been in a single grave ..!! engine gets less heated. Even car is loaded, it climbs hair-pin in 2nd gear, without bringing to 1st. Power steering is like feather touch. Since, am a short guy, the seat arrangement is good espcially height. Whereever u take him, manza will be with you... Love u Manza ..:) | Reply

Sohail, Palio was not a flop. It is designed using ferrari technology. Once the production is stopped everything will be stopped, even the spare parts. The future will be same for Linea too. See what happens after a year. Fiat do not have own showroom in India. It's the tie-up with Tata. None buy's a car in every 3 to 6 months. So choose wisely. Find out the best one until u r satisfied.. Later, forget about others comments.. coz, that's what others do... good luck! | Reply

Hi Guys, I bought Manza Safire 90 (Aura ABS) before 20 days. I am extremely happy with the performance after 2 long drives and plenty of city driving. I have compared with a lot of other cars in the segment and a segment above but th best thing about TATA Manza is that it's suitability to Indian Urban and Rural conditions. 1.4 L petrol engine borrowed from FIAT but tuned well by Tata. Mileage is a concern in city driving with heavy traffic but the driveability of Manza is really surprising in Traffic. It rolls out so smooth, thanks to the better insulation package. The best in Manza is the Braking as the 1.5 ton monster stops quickly. A huge improvement over past models. Space is premium and best in the class and even better some cars a segment above. Performance in long term use is yet to know. You can't compare it with Linea or Fiesta as it is in for a different league of people. Most suited sedan for India. Best in Tata lineup. The only concern is Tata salesmen doe's not even know the full features and I am yet get any feedback on service. Tata need to improve a bit on palstics finishing, but overall a good family sedan. Jaiho Tata. | Reply

Mohit,Anyone can say anything in India. If u have money u can go for bmw 520d or benz 4matic. Starting with Tata Indica, the body is Italian design. That does not mean that its from fiat. Certian technology in engine and other components are taken from experts. But, overall its designed for Indian roads. if u know driving try for a test drive. Else, go for a ride.. This should not be a romantic ride. It should be a brutal testing by u. Come to an conclusion and later decide. Good Luck ! | Reply

I bought Manza deisel month back. I like everything as other friends says but it makes a bad noise at front left when passes over road edge or small pothole. I feel its a design problem. I got assurence from our dealer to rectify it. | Reply

Sreedhar, I own the Manza Safire and have the same problem. In fact it produces a kind of scratching sound when passing over speadbreakers and sometimes a loud DHUD when passing on speadbreakers at > 20KMPH. I am planning to get it checked. What about your problem, has it been fixed? | Reply
Douglas (05 March 2010 20:45) Reply to sreedhar
Sreedhar, It may not be a design problem. After all its a vehicle. go for first service and give the details of the issue. It will be rectified. Later, try the same in speedbreakers and shabby roads without spoiling ur car. test the brakes before u take the car to the road. Good luck ! waiting for a good news ..:) | Reply

Hi Nikitha, great to know that you are getting a good response from your Manza safire. Even I am planning to buy a Manza Safire Aura, however I have been told by a lot of people that Tata's petrol engines are not so great and have a recurring problem with perofrmance. Can you suggest me if that is correct? I am quite jinxed, the car seems to be perfect in terms of features and price, however I don't want to get into a situation where I have to go to a workshop every now and then. Hi,Go for a test drive. You will not even hear the sound of the engine when its started(Petrol). Performance of the car will depend how u handle it no matter if its bmw. because i have both. Do not compare to others. Experience it and come to an conclussion. Tata Manza is an improved version among other car.Good luck !

Hi, I am also planning to buy the car preferably MANZA aura-Abs (Deisel) , But still in dilema, for me car A.S.S and car reputation are also the imporant factors in addition to excellent specs in my budget. I had a very bad experience with Last indica (4 yr before) and I am pretty happy with my wagon-R atleast w.r..t. servise shops, most of the the time i call the workshop, they simply arrange a pick up and return my car in my office and car is serviced very well and i find a check list in the car..and that during my office hours so it save lot of time also .. Other facts ..the check list is they present, the way they interact all this is quiet impressive.. and main thing any spare of maruti is easily available in even very remote villages and give some confidence to move on long driveI also have good faith in TATA ..I would like to know something recent from any manza owner who has completed some good miles and his/her experiences for services shops in Delhi .. | Reply

i have brought manza Aura -abs diesel on 12 nov , till now i have driven 3200 kms . The engine power is adequate , the turbo lag is there , but barely perceptible/ very subtle . The ride ,handling ,braking , space , comfort and mileage are excellent. I constantly manage to get 20 kms in busy bangalore city traffic after the first service, a few minor problems occurred, clutch was tight , left interior door handles falling out , got fixed during first service . now no problems at all , blue tooth functions are good , pairing is easy , but frequently get disconnected, i recommended manza for potential buyers, do not compare manza with old generation tata cars indica , indigo cars. i personally own indica v2 dlg turbo , but faced lot of niggling problems , frequent service etc . i feel it is value for money than other competitors, just go for it | Reply

While researching for an affordable sedan, I came across a lot of negative comments on Tata cars, including manza. The most common cribs are on the fit-and-finish, plastic quality, performance and after sales service. And a very common refrain is that Tata cars are taxis implying a lower social value. Cars from GM, Honda, Toyota, Ford and surprise of suprises even Mecedes Benz are used as taxis in western world. Since I do not have to climb social status through the front or rear end of the car, the badge of a car never bothers me. If I had inherited very large sum of money from a long lost uncle who found a hidden treasure in Amazon forest, I would have driven an Alfa Romeo. I finally settled for Manza Aura Safire and took delivery of the car about ten days back with wait period of only 20 days. It is a BIG car with acres of space, specially in the rear, that will make my family very comfortable on long drives. All my friends say that the car looks good, though I do not think it will win Miss Universe contest. I do not know if it looks like Vista with a boot or not. Inside plastics feel like, well plastics. They do not have the feeling of Kanjivaram/Banarasi/Musshidabad silk. During the ten days I have been driving, the boot has not fallen off, engine has not exploded, wheels have not parted company, gear knob has not come off into my hand, door handles are still sticking to the car, my six feet tall son does not have to detach his legs to get inside the car. In fact nothing unpleasant happened with the car as yet. I asked several taxiwallas who drive indica/indigo if they had any serious problem with their cars. The answers had been emphatic no. For those who like to drive high (?) quality/status sedans, please go for City, Cruze, or S-class. For those of us without the proverbial uncle, there is nothing like a FULLY-LOADED Manza Aura Safire under 6 lakhs. | Reply

Dilip,Some of the comparisons reminded me of Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s books; a lot of humour, sensible ones! You have brought out the most imprtant points that I am trying to come in terms with after cramming different forums. Right now, I am considering them to be my Holy Bhagavadgetha! Before I pour my sentiments about MANZA, I wanted to highlight what a very well written and framed reply you hve there. Thanks a lot for the clarity and being so explicit. Sir, I went today (Feb 13) to see MANZA and since I am not someone who understands or even has an eye to look at the nitty-gritty of whether they have used the right amount of chemicals (!!) to make those interior plastics, I must admit it made me go weak down my knees after seeing the car (I saw Aura). There was an aura; must say! Now what Indians are generally good at; sentiments and emotions. Some of mine which is letting me in full freedom to vascillate between an i20 and Manza Aura (Petrol):1. Sales suport of TATA. Again, this is very relative if you are from a place different from where I hail. Would you be able to comment anything on this? As a 2 - wheeler user, I am trying to understand what more should I expect from a car service provider. 2. What other cars did you have in mind before you and your family signed on a TATA service order's dotted line? 3. Perhaps you could write a line or two about how smooth the car is compared to an i20 (Aaah! Did you see how confused I am despite craving for a sedan ? ).4. Hard earned and saved money on my first ever car; just 10x tensed and excited to get the best. Enunciate more things about Manza Aura, will you, please? :)Eagerly waiting for your response. Any other way I can reach you at would be of colossal help.Regards,Shreyas AgasthyaP.S: While I am submitting this note here, my word verification is 'adjust'. i had bought the indigo marina 4 years back , Good car superb space value for money . but absolutely lacks class . Everything about the Tata vehicle is like the indian mentality - chalse ! We celebrate appreciate and rever mediocrity. Coming out with a vehcile low on price by compromising on quality and having people appreciate is encouraging mediocrity . The indigo marina / indica vista are all fine to look at - but travel on the indian roads for 500 kms and the doors start rattling- the potholes feel like you are going over a volcanic crater . I am proud of the concept of the Nano and i love the TATA s for thinking of the common man , but like someone said in one of the posts , we need a car thats super fuel efficient, super leg space, super boot space for all our joint families and out of station rides, with the quality of the Toyota s and the sleekness of the Honda s and the price of the TATA s till then we wil have people cribbing . TATAs after service SUCKS big time. I have become tired of it since last 4 years . If you have a problem i would rather prefer a Maruti than a TATA | Reply

Dear Noel Tata Motors is the 19th largest automaker in the world and the second largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles in the world. The company is the world¡¯s fourth largest truck manufacturer, and the world¡¯s second largest bus manufacturer. And the world automotive market where Tata has earned this position is a highly competitive market. Since there entry in the Indian car market more than a decade back they have seen significant growth and all there cars have been a great success. | Reply

Well, again all these facts reflect what Noel said. Largest Truck and Bus manufacturers, Of course, we need bus and trucks and they are the only ones manufacturing in India for some time apart from Ashok Leyland. Their cars had crowded the roads as city taxis. That would have done some good to their profit figures. They have think out of the box and that looks miles away.On the other hand, their new Bus in the market, competition to Volvo buses, is a good step in the right direction but they need to do way more to come up to international standards, if you want to compare them with global companies, that is. | Reply

I ran from pillar to post trying to have these comprehensively addressed and even sent 30-40 letters to Mr Rattan Tata himself but to little avail. I was recently able to sell of my car at a throw away price and would never touch a Tata product again. I would only advise that any buyer should be extremely wary before buying a tata car. Manufacturing defects can come in any car irrespective of the make, I own a 2002 Indica, some defective parts were there which were replaced by the dealer free of cost during warranty, since than no problem, done 108000 Kms, still in very good running condition, very staisfied with the TATA cars. Dimensionally it is close to Altis and Civic.Very spacious , gives good looks of the road.Features r great . Only thing is that First Tata should stop using old names like Indica and Indigo which creates bad image and as if the cars r old. They should not be obseesed with Indica like looks (Tail lamps, Smiling Grill ) The design should be contemporory. Only it lacks elegance from outside .It could have been made more elegant in looks. By the way I have booked Aura ABS Quadrajet.White | Reply

It isn¡¯t a big deal 2 replace the car audio system¡¦ the head unit pops out of the dash by use of simple tools, most hu in Indian cars are 2¡± height¡¦. If changing the make of the hu is a prob (also an easy task,, but¡¦.as told by your dealer), ask him 2 replace it with the same make higher model which has ur desired features ¡¦ may be the dealer doesn¡¯t want 2 do the extra work as the car is now sold....

At present Tata has launched a mid-segment luxury sedan for an affordable price for every class people after Nano. try for couple of test drives and other road test. Come to an conclusion. Do not compare with bmw or audi. They r in different segment. Compare with Dzire, Logan, ikon, Fiesta, Verna etc.... Good luck!! Its a Indian car. Its best in India .. U will love it. If I were running Tata Motors:1. I would not have borrowed the 'Indica/Indigo' names for the new line of cars, which truly deserve a new identity for how different they are. Calling them just 'Vista/Manza' as opposed to 'Indica Vista/Indigo Manza' would have been strategically wiser. Tata Motors did not really draw hardcore car admirers with either Indica or Indigo. Taxi companies thought of them as low cost solutions that just about serve the purpose, while Vista and Manza are definitely more sophisticated in terms of image and performance.2. I would have stuck to the quadrajet engine for the Vista and not have TDI as an option. That would go another step towards breaking free from the Indica/Indigo legacy. After all marketing is just as important, if not more, as making great cars! | Reply

hi ,tested the manza quadrajet Diesel today.excelent.while acclerating you feel pushed to the seats.i feeling as if your are taking off in a rocket(well i havent travelled in one)but that is what i get to understand from movie watching.you need to try it to feel it.but what i feel is one may not need it for the city drive, what i found while driving around was that each time i accelerated to get that feel i had to brake(city traffic).no doubt most reviews are for diesel. the petrol was not bad at all but you dont feel pushed to the seats ,nice smooth acceleration, the diesel gives a sudden kick i loved that feel( i havent really tested a diesel car before).but i think would still settle for the petrol as my driving is very limited and is restricted to the city mostly.i also got to see these colors Breeze Blue, Grey Noir, Gold Satin, Infinity Black, Minimal Grey and Monarch Red.breeze blue looked different could make heads turn.waiting to see dew white and gold satin.for good pictures pls check http://www.cardekho.com/Tata/Tata_Manza/pictures. | Reply

The cars which we consider global in India aka: the Sx4, the Dzires, the Accents, the Vernas hardly have any market presence in developed countries and even in the Gulf countries (which run entirely on foreign cars). They are the leaders in there home countries only. And we Indians feel an increase in our pride if we own these so called global cars. Tata cars are the true value for money, the maintenance cost is minimal: the taxi tag proves it, very spacious, off late they have become very refined, Manza and Vista are really great and above all they are INDIAN. Go for the TATA cars without any second thoughts and make them the market leader in INDIA. | Reply

Singh (04 December 2009 09:46) Reply to Sap
Sap it is not patriotism, it's simple plain economics, you buy your countries products, your money comes into circulation and your country grows, you buy imported products, your money goes out and other countries make merry on your money. And this is the reason why Britishers, Americans and Europeans go for there own products. But lets forget the economics, Tata cars are great and have to be seen with an open mind setting aside the stereotypes and the tags attached.

Hi All,I owned an Indica for 4 years. 59,000 KM distance covered without any problems and gor good resale value too. Booked Manza and getting it around 20th December. One of my friends, who owned Santro for 4.5 years too booked Manza. The guys who are commenting that TATA cars are meant for TAXI, should understand one thing clearly that unless affordable to run for many years economically and safely too, no car can achieve that tag.Plastic Quality. Oh, i heard that any plastic last for 500 years as its not biodegradable. If engines are the same, does it really matter if quality of plastic is different. Are you buying a car or the plastic? Why spend more many? be a smart buyer. Aesthetically, Manza is better value for money car. With ABS, its much safer now.USA people opted for American cars and avoided Japanese cars for pride of the nation and too boost their economy a little bit.We need to grow up, accept the fact that TATA who are into car segment only for around 10 years, giving so called Global players run for their money.Competition is now on. Just relax guys and enjoy it. | Reply

hi this is sukumar again .i finally got to drive the manza petrol .the brakes were fixed so were the child lock problems which i had mentioned earlier.the drive was fine though i found the steering a bit tight, but the response was very good ( i have not driven BMW's or VW,s etc)the pickup in the second and third gears was good even with the Ac on.the vehicle did not have any hiccups even @ 20 kmph in 3rd gear with AC on with my 4 folks and the company man beside me.the road handling was good ,the ride was not that bumpy for the battered by recent rains chennai roads.there was decent view of the road ahead ,which could have been even better adjusted with the hight adjustable seats( i just did not try further).the road grip was also good.i found the horn to be a little less noisy(from the inside with windows closed and AC on,i drive a non AC 800 with open windows),just waiting to get a few more reviews before settling for this car . i would also suggest to look up for major V K Yadav's comments on EURO III dated 10th march on this page .the plastics were ok considering the price being quoted for this ,even more expensive cars had cheaper finishes (interiors).think it should be a fine car ,we just need to watch out for maintenence issues (though hope there should not be many and even if there be any should not be a great issue as this has only a tweeked engine of its predecessors namely the vista).the blue tooth was fine.the music system comes with a USB and AUX port with a decent speakers as default. | Reply

Hi all, well...its been around 3/4 weeks since I started driving my black Manza. I am getting a Mileage of 10 as my display shows and most of the times, my A/C is ON.Coming to Performance, yes, its actually doing wonders. I have driven Nissan Micra and Hyundai Sonata GLS before and found my Manza's performance really really aggressive with very good pickup. Only one problem I have is that my key is unable to open my trunk but Manza cannot be blamed for this as it is a car specific problem and not brand-fault.Yes, fit and finish are not that great which is the only negative about the car. | Reply

Dont Be...If you are looking for the features, Manza is your car. If you are looking for a car that has better resale value, go for Dzire. But think of owning a car for a minimum of 3 years, without features (compared to manza), only to get resale value. And yeah, if you have a family, and some day you go to a picnic, the Dzire gives you enough leg room at the backseat to be cursed about :p. Manza gives you loads of leg room. The mileage is around 18/22 city/highway for the 1.3 Quadrajet engine. Now those are not bad numbers, are they ? | Reply

No compromises. Fuel efficiency almost same as swift and also the drive quality and space wise better than Ritz and at round about 50K more than them. Its a catch .... | Reply

If you have some word from the company itself in Black and White then make it public for everyone to see and believe, till then for me and others car is currently EUROIII compliant. | Reply

| Reply

The car is really very good. guys go for it. i have done extensive surveys on all the cars as I am going to buy a new car. The Manza comes out as the best buy. I had put safety and comfort as the first requirement in my survey and then there was economy, after sales service and style. Manza is overall first. No doubt Maruti and Hyundai will have tough time now. unless and until the Maruti comes out with soem diesel version of SX4 Manza is going to take over a big share of the market from them. Regarding the Honda City I think it is too overpriced as all the Honda cars are. Just imagine paying 2 lacs extra for just a brand name. Regarding Hyundai they have stopped selling Verna in Koreya but they are selling the old model in India stating it as the best car. I think I should stick to the Indian car manufacturer because atleast I can come to know what is happening. Remember that in today's world no foreigner is here to help out the Indians, they are just here to fool you and make money as much as they can and then leave as Daewoo did. | Reply

Dear santunu, your comments are extremely biased and one can easily see the obvious. Names you have mentioned as foreigners are reputed car makers with very good track record of safety and service. Cost factors are pure business. These automakers are contributing to the coffers of nation in terms of taxes. Pl don't mix patriotism with auto business. Dear all prospective buyers of manza (including myself) the engine of Manza is EuroIII compliant and from April 2010 EuroIV norms are going to be effective which means the vehicles purchased before April 2010 would considered older one and would not be reregistered in EuroIV compliant states. So wait till April 2010 when surely the company will come up with an upgraded version. Till then see it and admire it. | Reply
 Rakesh (09 November 2009 13:16) Reply to major v k yadav
Regitration of existing vehicles whether Euro II or III compliant will still hold good. I guess the Euro IV will be applicable for vehicles registerd post Apr. 2010 or whatever cutt off date is announced | Reply
 major v k yadav (10 November 2009 10:21) Reply to Rakesh
you will be able to drive EuroIII compliant vehicle in your city of registration even after adoption of EuroIV norms but once again i stress that you can not re register your vehicle in a city with EuroIV norms in place in case you plan to shift after April 2010. So why to take risk? I have even written an email to the company about same quite some time back and they are yet to answer my query. Even the local dealers are clueless or should i say tight lipped about the whole issue. Why can't TATA motors come out in open and clear the air about whole issue? As a consumer this is the matter of my hard earned money. This is no rocket science to understand about the resale value of a vehicle with EUROIII tag and a vehicle with EUROIV tag. So once again i reaffirm my statement and advise all the fellow readers of TOI to refrain from buying the vehicle unless the TATA motors comes out in open in BLACK | Reply

It is a great car at the offered price. Have driven Manza Petrol for about 20 kms. I am very satisfied with the ride quality, comfort and the fe of 18 it clocked for the short distanceBoot is bit oversized, instrument panel is somewhat cramped, inside rear view mirror is tiny and alloys are missing otherwise its a winner.Love to see Tatas launching a World Car on a trimmed Manza platform and knocking off about 200kgs with further improvement in fit and finish and by upgrading the support set up across the country to handle newer taechnologies that Manza has.If you are about to decide for a new car then my suggestion is 'suno sabki, karo man ki', that is nothing but what we call is 'make an informed decision'.Safe and sane motoring ....all auto enthusiasts. | Reply

Tata will vainish away very soon or may be people who are ready to compromise on quality and prestige with money will buy it. An intelligent and classy person will never prefer to owe a tata car. The room inside Indica and Indigo is the best in its class and even bigger than the other upside saloons and hatchbacks. Guys, TATA's have come a long way in car manufacture. I am a Tata Fan. I have owned Tata cars from tatamobile to sierra, et all, except the Nano. I have had the luck to drive exotics too while overseas. I am a chartered engineer and a auto buff. TATA SIMPLY OFFERS THE BEST OVERALL COST OF WONER SHIP AMONG ALL VEHICLES IN INDIA (in thier respective cars.) and manza will be no exception. The best car in this segment is the fiat linea. But the engine mapping of the cars seperate them. Manza is the fun horse, linea is the equestrian horse-pomp and style. Forget ford, city verna et all. Yes, you can absolutely go ahead with Tata. I own a Tata Manza Aura Saffire Petrol and it just rocks on our roads. I can never compare my car with any of the higher segment sedan even as Tata Manza is truly spacious and it excels in its performance. Engine is so smooth that you may wonder even after starting the engine, you ll feel that you ve not started it ;).Also, I have learnt Gear mechanism only in this car as I used to drive only an Automatic (hyundai sonata) for past 5 years and believe me , it was so easy for me to learn Gear shift in tata manza because of smooth gear handling. Only one negative aspect (if at all) in my Manza is plastics used inside are not that great. But imagine. you are getting a big luxurious sedan for affordable price. So plastics used is the only compromise. Otherwise, one can just close the eyes and buy the car. | Reply

I owned a tata indica v2 (2004) . Did about 198K kms in 3 years. No issues.Regular service is not very expensive. No issues with car whatsoever.Bought a IndigoSX, done 120K Kms in 3 years. again no issues. still gives an average of 18 in city, 22 on hiighway. Have a safari 2.2 ,done 40K kms in 1.5 years. No issues again. Very sturdy car. No issues. Avg - 12 in city and 15 on highway.IMHO, if you like the car buy it. you may get initial hiccups, but in long term you will love it and find it tru VFM. Most of the people i have come across have only heard from somewhere or other regarding bad quality of tata cars, but actually rarelly have 1st hand exp. I suggest you yourself check the cars and select.Majority of us Indians are obsessed about foreign cars and would go lenghs defending our obsession. So no point arguing. I would like to add that besides, I own a Ford Mondeo also, five years old done 35000 Kms. But I am not happy with it, spares and maintenance are very costly, hardly any resale value and driveability is also not very good, takes a lot of effort for going from speeds above 100 kmph. | Reply

Hi all, well I have been an owner of an Indigo Marina Lx since Oct 05, and with the help of the extended warranty have had a very pleasant experience of ownership. Yes it does have a few flaws like turbo lag and NVH is a little high, but what do you expect of a then price tag of Rs 6 lacks on road Mumbai (2005). Now coming to the Manza I have see the car at different showrooms about three times sat in it, adjusting the front seats for comfort and found ample amount of comfort and space, both front and rear and must sat the interiors have improved in their fit and finish as well as quality its really a nice place to be in, seen the boot compartment which is quite large and deep and just checked out the engine bay to see how the fiat engine looks packaged into a manza. As usual for a TATA sedan ground clearance is quite high for the car but then again it’s a car made for our roads isn’t it. I can’t wait for the test drive and will be making the final decision to go in for one or not. But then again having a budget of Rs 7 lacks it’s seems so far to be a sure shot. And for the Guys at TATA MOTORS great Job Guys and hopefully may be there will be next gen Marina in a few years time as well which I’m looking forward to as well. | Reply

Pros of Tata cars:1) Great value for money - lots of space and features for the money!2) Cheap to run.3) Good paint quality.4) Rugged and tough.5) Very comfortable to ride in because of nice, supportive seats.Cons of Tata cars:1) Poor fit and finish - especially of interior plastics.2) Service leaves a lot to be desired (My family has had both Tata and Maruti cars, and I feel Maruti devilers much more when it comes to service.)3) Rapid tyre wear is always a problem (maybe because of the heavy diesel engine).4) Uncomfortable to drive, because of bad ergonomics - like high dashboard, which prevents one from seeing the bonnet and bad placement of the pedals which tire the legs.5) Vague and rubbery gearbox.6) Poor resale value. This is all that comes to mind right now. Hope this is of some help. | Reply

Hey Komal, yeah i have heard comments too abt the TATA engines giving you trouble past 50k km or 2yrs down the lane.but i believe that depends upon the driving conditions..AFA manza is concerend, its got a good engine, thanks to the Tata-FIAT jv, tatas have been milking fiat for their best in class Multi jet diesel engines. The diesel in manza is the same unit as on the Linea , of course with some mods made to the gear ratios. There's turbo lag, but post 1800 rpm, it drives well.Overall The drive is kinda ok (not that impressive)..the interiors spacious(the only good feature from my perspective), the seats offer better comfort but..the design is pathetic for a sedan...looks like indica vista welded to a large boot..but of course the money you' paying for , this sedan does offer features compared to the competitiors..but i would say u check out models like the chevorlet Aveo/hyundai accent and Marutis as well b4 narrowing in on ur decision...I feel, the tata-fiat jv is working well for tata in terms of sourcing world class engine technology.I guess fiat should withdraw the jv n sell more cars than engines :) | Reply

i would like to mention one more thing....as i have analysed tata cars generally used for taxi purpose as said by all experts but when they are trying with new launch to compete direct with the swift dzire...fiat..punto...writz then still y aint we all giving them chance to proove themselves n still looking down at them regarding their 'taxi tag' i think every new car takes time to settle in consumers mind n as far as we indians are concerned we go more for saying of others rather than new tech and logic....why cant we blv that our indian company tata can also do gr8 job in this tough competions....well i think mr. ratan tata needs to read n analyse all these comments coz we write what we feel n to sustain in market they should work according the consumers desire coz we are the king....they should come forward to proove us that they are in way to change their tag of tata-taxi lable n should provide anything be it in form of warranty or offer that they have really improved their quality...secondly it is hard to compare swift n all with new launch of tata coz all other has got on road exp records atleast for 7 to 8 years but this manza n aura are totally new n needs some time to make good market share.... | Reply

Out of all my cars I have driven it the most. After driving it for 100000 Kms, I still have the same feeling which I had seven years ago when it was new. My other cars are yet to see 50000 Kms, and to top it all I have driven it in all kinds of terrain and at places where there is no terrain also.Buddy first experience and then comment, don't spread the word of mouth. | Reply

This is the best car in the segment.NEW INDIGO is also a much improved version, it is a lovely car. Unfortunately We INDIANS take pride in criticising whatever is Indian and take extreme pride in praising overseas companies even if they sell crap - M800 was a rejected model in Japan. If any of their car has problem, we blame it on Roads, poor driving, poor maintainence etc but if something similar happens to a TATA car then we say - Indian car are cheap stuff !! IT IS TIME WE BREAK THE CLONOLIAL MENTALITY AND ADOPT A OPEN VIEW ABOUT TATA CARS. I SAY IT OUT OF EXPERIENCE - TRY IT AND THEN COMMENT. | Reply

I have used Tata cars for the last 14 years...first a Sierra and then Indigo. Tata vehicles get you from point A to B ...all vehicles do that...however its about how you get there... all tata vehicles are dogged by the same problem-Quality or rather lack if it. Even the works manager at the tata service center accepts that Quality is where they take a beating. The sad part is that no one not even Mr.Ratan Tata cares. If he were to use the Safari which is their flag ship, even for a month, he would also agree with the thousands of dissatisfaction Tata customers. All tata car owners swear never to buy another Tata vehicle. The last time I was at the service station I met a cabbie (he had an indigo) and he was crying for being duped into buying a tata car.He said his car spent mote time in the garage than on the road and the unfortunate part was that he had a 3 year loan to pay. Poor bloke!By the way I did over 1,60,000 kms in my Sierra so if you dont mind the rattles, squeaks, cheap plastics etc I guess they are good at getting you from Point A to B. | Reply

Well liking for Honda City comes from the Brand HONDA for reliability and service, and hence people are buying with their eyes closed. Well, Honda car and a tata car is way different! And the current Honda City has corrected and updated its design. Its in no comparison that a Tata car(with a Fiat - Quadrajet engine) and performance efficient engine of a City (Honda has proved City success in US, most of Indian students buy that and drive that there!). Sure Tatas will rake up some sales in India (and abroad, as well), but will be way different from Honda performance. I've driven both Honda City, All Tata cars and will soon test drive a Tata Manza, but m sure Tata-Honda is no match. But its heartening to see Tatas Designs grow up, to heat up the competion (Manza has little odd looks but if it performs in India, what else do you want). And, many cars in Indian road anyway look awfully odd, remember the tall boy designs, I find all tall boy designs pretty odd, but they are selling very well now .... | Reply

I can bet you've not seen or driven the car. In any case you get what you pay for. If you compare apple to apple it's a pretty decent buy. Need to understand that each car maker has a customer segment in mind while making a product. As long as it satisfies the target segment it's a great. There is no need for you or anyone to run it down smply because you do not have any data to come to any conclusion. | Reply

I am an owner of Indigo (Diesel) from the very first few lots launched in early 2003. Driven it for over 70 thousand kilometers. I have driven other cars of Maruti and Hyundai, too. The difference is amply clear. Anybody from my family, from age 4 to 65, can tell. It feels a lot safer, comfortable and enjoyable to be in Indigo. What engineering makes those feelings possible? Tata definitely knows it! | Reply

I am seeing a lot of debate that Tata cars are being used as taxies. A lot of people associate cars used as taxies as 2nd rate cars.Do these people think why these are run as taxies, because Tata cars are rugged, spacious, easy to maintain and good value for money. Are these not the attributes one looks for ? We all know the answer. The way Tata cars are maturing, its a matter of time that this brand will be as good as any other mature global brand. Look at the ves in life and Tata cars have to be seen in that light. | Reply

Good Car but Very Expensive I would prefer a Suzuki Dzire/Ford Fiesta which have better build quality and cost the same..Also Fiat Linea Diesel entry model is just 40,000 more that Diesel Manza... Bad Pricing can get things Worse for Tata This Time | Reply
Carzzzz (16 October 2009 02:10) Reply to Azure
Price is not bad, Dzire's design is the worst design on Indian roads. Ford Fiesta, needs high maintainence and low resale value. Hence Manza is going to be the best in its class , I just love the car from behind... back lights are too good... | Reply

Tata though is doin its best to get quality cars i surely feel that it lacks way beyond other companies in its design. The same monotonous design for all its models....pls change the front grill....The reason for getting out new cars on the same platform is the cheap affordabke price at the cost of looks.... | Reply

What was played against TATA Cars was lack of ABS. With much more coming in in Manza, this should be a GREAT BUY! Tatas should now brace up to compete only in SERVICING sector of MARUTI which is unparalleled. If Tatas can manage enough good Service stations, it will be brilliant. All the Best. My new buy will definitely be a MANZA! | Reply

It's more than 10 years that Indica was launched. TATA can never come up with a car that doesn't look like Indica. Why would anyone pay 5-6 lacs to buy a can that looks like Indica?? Icon, Ritz, Fabia are a better buy. | Reply
Douglas (05 March 2010 21:32) Reply to Siddhartha
Yes, you are correct sir. Then why not bmw, benz 4matic, Audi, Acura? Its the service, spare parts and maintanence. Manza is a Mid-segment luxury sedan launched by Tata for all class people. U know toyota innova has the poorest braking system. Go 90 plus and apply brakes it will still move for another 30 feet. That means whoever at the front of vehicle are like a sandwich between innova and road. It almost looks like Indica vista but, not the same. More boot space, and back seat space is good. Other electric and automatic controls in an affordable price. I can assure u go 125plus in manza and apply sudden brake. It will not move more than a feet. Ground clearence is more than in Tata Indigo. I drove in Hair-pin in second gear--perofrmance. Engine not getting heated-up. No back pain after 7 hrs of continous drive.. No tiredness. Wht else u need .. Dude... good luck! | Reply
