Nissan is ready to flex its muscles in India with the all-new X-Trail. Varad More drives the latest entrant in the Compact SUV segment

The Nissan X-Trail was designed to appeal to the new-age youth looking for a stylish compact off-road vehicle. The project chief, Masahiro Toi, went researching around the globe to understand the taste of various young buyers with regards to the sort of a compact SUV they would like to drive.

Under the leadership of Carlos Ghosn, the X-Trail was developed and the final production model was shown to the world in 2001.

Nissan Motor Company ventured in India in 2004 with the highly successful first generation X-Trail - which was by then a well established model in the International compact SUV market. However, the first generation X-Trail was unable to make its mark in India and the rather sedate looks of the SUV failed to appeal to the buyers. The new X-Trail is set to concretise Nissan's hold in India and it looks well-armoured to tackle every obstacle in its path.

Nissan should seriously consider CKD options to bring down the cost. It is too expensive, given that Toyota has a cheaper and better option in Fortuner. | Reply

is the dvd and bluetooth enabled touchscreen in dashbaord included in any of the varient? | Reply

None of the variants have a dvd/bluetooth enabled touchscreen, but you can always pull out the factory fitted 2 din system and put in an aftermarkek unit from kenwood or jvc etc | Reply

I have always wondered why there is not much of a second hand market for SUV's from Japan/Dubai. One can land a ten year old Land Cruiser from Japan for under 10 lacks!!!! I rather drive a used Land Cruiser for 10 lacs which will last me another 15 years than to pay 20 lacks | Reply

By the time all smart guys woke-up, the Toyota took the cake and walked away. All this senseless pricing of X-trail, CRV, Captiva, Tucsun, Vitara will not survive for long run and will make an attractive proposition to competitors to enter the market. If pricing is reasonable, then it is justified by volumes. It increases the brand loyalty in long run for an successfull venture. | Reply

The utility of every SUV can be tested when it is taken to the difficult places. It is where you will come to know that the price you paid is worth as you would easily cross the difficult terrains. I am talking about X-trail only as this SUV have proven on most difficult roads. This Japanese SUV require very less maintenance. People who buy these SUV and travel around the city will definitely think that they have spend too much for this machine. | Reply

India is such a big country, so many manufactureres, no real SUV is worth to be paid for...I think we really miss an manufacturer who is really serious about making long term business or committment to customers. Everybody is looking it as an opportunity to make money and possibally may vanish...!! | Reply
PinkSlip (24 October 2009 14:15) Reply to MaN
There is wide gap between products and their pricing. That's true, nobody bothered about buyers money's worth in return. What these manufacturers think...?? It's an liability of manufactureres to the customers for their inability to make them worth they made them to shell for..!! | Reply

If it's really available for 10 lakhs, then I will replace all of my 3 different vehicles into this one only. | Reply

If that's the case they can sell few thousands per month for sure. | Reply

If you can't price sensibally, it doesn't make difference whether it is available in India or not. If it is offerdable then it makes difference of buying one for me.....!!! | Reply

Wrong pricing of any product will kill, even if it is competant in the market in the long run. Even the brand too will suffer. | Reply

This is unsuccessfull model in abroad, Its not worth for 20-25 lakhs. In dubai this is entry level sedan and cost only just below 10lakhs. better go for Fortuner | Reply

Fyi, this is not a cosmetic change. It is completely a redesign from ground up but uniquely, certain design quotients are carried over from the older design. Pls google and find out. Reviewers should read more and write! Fyi, I drive this, vehicle, and this is one of the best handling SUV I have ever driven. also, the mid range power delivery is so addict and the over taking is a breeze. The 4WD ability, you should try searching youtube and see...so many videos.CRV is a ladies special, RAV4 lost its idea completely...dont even come close to X-Trail! Truely X-treme vehicle! | Reply

Yes, this is an entry level SUV that costs around 10 lakh Rs in Japan. In india, SUVs are considered as 'premium' and if you want one, you have to pay 20 lakh !!! What a pity!! | Reply
  • MaDi (30 September 2009 10:36)
At this price of 25-28 lakh on road I think the Compact SUV are very very expensive to own and later to maintain, I wonder if Skoda can bring Yeti at 10 lakhs, I am sure to buy one first......really waiting from long time to own a good SUV. | Reply

@Prady, HM's outlander is one among the best compact SUVs. If they can manufacture with a 2 liter diesel engine and 2 whell drive(available in Europe) and an Invex box) what else we need? | Reply
  • Ramesh (23 September 2009 23:06)
@Prady, You are right, what the whole of HM is doing now a days? When all manufacturers are trying to put plants and launch new vehicles, HM sitting on old models and trying to sell the stuff which belongs to last generations, having a plant in Chennai? C'on HM we want you to wake-up, we need you to survive as a original car maker of India. Mitsubishi products are most competent in today's market. Produce some good SUV's from Mitsubishi, price them well, we people are with HM all the time. | Reply
  • Prady (23 September 2009 16:28)
Why is Hindustan Mototrs is so reluctunt to give-up the manufacturing of dated lancer and assemble more from Mitsubishi stable Like "Outlander diesel" "Mitsubishi Grandis" which are very very attractive and if they priced reasonable (not like the existing import) will sell in India..! | Reply
Manu (23 October 2009 06:40) Reply to Prady
In international market the "Outlander" comes with a 2 Lit. Volkswagen sourced diesel engine. It's noisy and feels crude but feels torquy like Skodas. If HM can make it in India, It can sell like hot cakes. But the pricing point with a lot of import content will not work for long. At the same time the same engine makes into "Mitsubishi Grandis" | Reply
VaM (23 October 2009 06:40) Reply to Manu
Outlander is the best looking SUV on the Indian roads today. A 2WD diesel should not cost more than 12 at Showroom. | Reply
  • Man (23 September 2009 16:18)
It's very sensible to understand that these "compact SUV" segment at this exhorbitant (almost double)prices, manages to sell in respectable numbers. Why does no manufacturer is planning to manufacture in India (other than CRV which doesn't pass on benefits) and pass on benefits to customers....??...so they can have a win win situation. | Reply
  • bharat (22 September 2009 17:11)
I cannot understand why they have not given us the 2.5 liter engine. just cosmetic changes does not make it a new model. | Reply
