K- series Swift's - Quick drive

Abhishek Nigam             8 Feb 2010

Buying a Car ? Get Best Deal
K-series

Emissions have always been one of the worst nightmares of auto-manufacturers and with BS-IV emissions homing in, it was time to head back to the drawing boards once again. Maruti Suzuki however had a pretty easy solution to tackle the problem. With their entire line-up already BS-IV ready, it was only the best selling Swift range that needed to be brought upto speed.

Instead of tinkering with the current G13B engines, Maruti Suzuki went ahead and plonked in the scrumptious K12M unit from the Ritz. Now many might think of this as a downgrade from a 1.3 litre engine to a 1.2, but when you look at the amount of technology that?s infused into the K12M unit, the G13B feels plain dated. Power output is down by 3 PS at 85 PS while torque remains the same at a 113 Nm.

However, the driving characteristics have been changed drastically. While both the Swift and the D'zire were extremely fun to drive cars, the new engine has inculcated a fresh lease of life into both the cars. The first thing that you notice when you fire up the engine is the new found refinement. NVH levels have been considerably worked upon with no vibes whatsoever even at high rpm's. From what we drove of it, outright performance seems to be quicker than the old car and mileage figures seems to have gone up as well. The suspension has also received minor tweaks giving the car a fine balance between ride and handling. The gear ratios are very well matched making city driving a breeze. On the highways though, overtaking long trailers needs downshifts and planning. But once in the powerband, the car simply surges ahead. At the moment Maruti Suzuki seems to have made its success story even better. Watch out for a full blown review coming up soon!

Hi SuryaDaily travel of 150 kms, go for the Swift VDI (Diesel). If your travel is less than 900 kms in a month, go for a petrol car, You could look at Swift VXi or Beat LT. | Reply

Hey Vikas Gurjar, you are talking like Gurjar of Rajesthan. There are lots of better engineer employed by Maruti than you are (if you are engineer at all).Company take long term view when they design new engine. It has lots to do with their future investment, life cycle of engine and so on...This is true for any car company. So Keep your Gurjar thinking with you only. | Reply

Rocky (15 March 2010 01:48) Reply to Mayank Gandhi
Maruti may come with some cosmetic changes to Wagon-R. So, if u r planning to buy Wagon-R put it on hold for some time. | Reply
Sidh (14 March 2010 23:44) Reply to Mayank Gandhi
Mayank u need to know ur daily usage (city/highway). If u don't take highway very often and looking for fuel economy then Wango R is good. In city with AC swift averages below 10 (patrol). Assess you need and usage before deciding | Reply

Vikash, PS rating doesn't necessarily mean the car is fast. You need to analyze the power output at different RPM.It may have 1-2 kmph less top speed. SSM is right. People like you shouldn't comment on things they don't know. | Reply

power drop is very less. even hard to find any difference while driving new swift. | Reply
  • Ram (11 February 2010 13:53)
Who says the Swift is not pwoerful like before? The drop in power is very marginal with the torque remaining same. So the surge, pick up and fun will be there. What's more, the new engine is expectedly far more fuel efficient than the old one. Watch out and this could be another runaway hot hatchback. | Reply
yeshwanth (13 February 2010 19:04) Reply to Ram
If the volkswagen polo is priced rite then i think we will be havin a serious contender here !!.. | Reply

Volkswagen petrol is underpowered. It wont pose any serios threat to Swift Petrol. | Reply

I agree. Also its costlier to buy and maintain.

AFter the Engine downgrade, will the prices of these cars are also likely to come down? | Reply
Puneet (28 February 2010 17:06) Reply to Brijesh
Brijesh, just because the engine capacity and PS rating has marginally decreased, doesn't mean its a downgrade. The engine is advanced and gives you 2.6 kmpl higher fuel efficiency. Don't be so ignorant. | Reply
dhaval (14 June 2010 13:27) Reply to Puneet
you will always loose power when you increase power efficiency. You can't get both of them. Thats why honda civic gives less mileage than wagon r and wagon r gives less mileage than alto. wagon r and alto's engines sucks when we turn a.c. on. | Reply
nitin arora (05 April 2010 17:09) Reply to Puneet
its a downgrade , ok plz current engines of swift and dzire are too good , now maruti has brought the engines in a lower excise bracket and still it takes the excise margin savings. cheaters ... | Reply
