Hyundai i20: Competition check

Hyundai Getz

The original big hatch from Hyundai was known for its young image. A facelift in 2007 gave way to the Getz Prime which is a curvier version of the Getz. The bonnet conceals either a 1.1 litre or 1.4 litre petrol engine and more recently a monster 1.5 litre common rail diesel engine. The highlight of the Getz was its confidence-inspiring gearbox with silk smooth shift quality. The Getz was a little low on space though and after being in existence for so long is now looking dated. In fact, in foreign markets, the i20 is being touted as the replacement for the ageing Getz but with the market that we have in India where multiple generations of the same car sell side-by-side, the Getz Prime will continue to exist. It is probably the older car's survival that may play spoil sport to the i20s plans. The i20 will be priced higher than the Getz Prime and that might just make it a bit too expensive for its worth consequently making the Getz Prime a viable option within the segment still.

    I have booked i 20 Magna and expecting delivery by this month end....my selection went this way...i 10(1.1L engine)-> i 10(Kappa)-> swift Vdi-> i 20 magna(alas)... All my months worth of research on mileage, driveability, resale, service..gaga got blew away one I saw the car....the test drive assured me that its no getz(with 1.1)....here I am no regrets painfully waiting for her....:) | Reply

    In UK, i20 is ranked #2, #1 is Fiat 500 in the segment, which is very expensive in India because it comes as CBU and hence, very heavy duty. Indian auto experts are saying that i20 is under powered with 1.2L Kappa engine, 0-100kph @13.4 sec though some experts give 0-100kph rating close to @16.3 sec, which is not correct. In UK, auto experts are recommending 1.25L Kappa engine which is rated 0-100kph @12.9 sec rather than 1.4L CVVT engine rated at 0-100kph @11.6 sec, unless you are enthusiast. My own experience is that i20 drives very good as a family car and engine feels peppy and eager at any speed with A/C on. It did not feel sluggish anyway in comparison i10 Kappa because i20 design is more aerodynamic, that has reduced wind resistance. A smart driver will get better mileage with i20 than i10, and on highway it will give mileage in high teens depending on driving @ 80-100kph. i20 is a very comfortable family car with useful features and safety but it is no sports car. I would like if they add ESC and parking sensors with top model at least, instead of climate Control - regular A/C is fine with me. | Reply

    A typical indian customer only thinks of the price, average (which they always call Mileage!!). Issues like comfort, safety, engineering are alien. Thats why better carmakers like Honda, Toyota, Merc etc have never launched small cars as even their base models out-do the top versions offered here by Maruti, GM etc. If one has more money, he will buy a Bigger car, Not a BETTER car! So whats really avbailable in this market for people who favour the practicality of Hatch-backs but would like premium products that they can afford. Here bigger equates better and so as ones spending power goes up so does the boot of the car which is unused by 90% of city dwellers for 95% of the year. In this country who will buy a 20 lakh A class hatchback from Merc saying -- Abey, itney mein to main Toyota ki vaddi gaddi le sakta hoon.... So its futile to talk here about Auto-trannys which are so easy to drive and reduce tension in our stop and go trafiic, or to speak about terms like engg, high-end, comfort, extra features. The only questios are--- kiney ki hai,, kya mileage (avge) deti hai, kitna size hai. Baaki sab gaya teil lene......... | Reply

    i think this car is very highly priced ...why should one go for this car if around the same price one can get the swift diesel or the swift desire which gives gud value for money n the other comes with a big boot as well...hyundai seriously needs to look into the pricing of the i20 which is around 50-60k higher than wot it actually should be ! | Reply

    i20 is being unveiled worlwide.As a japanese car co suzuki market share has shrinked drastically.Suzuki is pioneer in small cars.With respect Koreans,Japanese has better technology.In India Koreans compete with the price of japanese,germans etc.But internationally they are much lower in prices with respect to the manufacturers of other countries.India's consumers are immature to buy Korean product at a price of Japanese. | Reply

    Comparing with Swift is not correct.Swift like all Maruti cars start rattling after three months.You dont need music system then.Hyundai I20 is the best car in its segment like all previous cars | Reply

    Here’s the summary of upsides of i20: Designed at Hyundai’s design center in Germany, Europe. Extended wheelbase, bigger and roomy interiors and quite decent leg space. The rear bench can comfortably accommodate 3 persons. The teardrop shaped front headlamps and rear army of lights retain Hyundai’s uniqueness and gives it cool and distinct looks. Hyundai should be appreciated for its generosity in fitting with new-age equipments inside. The style, climate control architecture inside, partial leather upholstery, front defog lamps will become USP of i20. Just like CO2 emission, fuel economy is something that’s quite impressive in i10 and manufacturers vouch that i20 runs for 16 km per liter on city roads and over 18 on highways. CAP predicts that the entry-level i20 which is a classic 5 door hatchback will still be worth 47 percent of the list price after three years and 30,000-miles – which is equivalent to Fiesta and greater than Corsa. Hyundai i20 with 1.4 CRDi 3-door is yet to be launched and will roll down somewhere in April according to company sources | Reply

    those who are saying swift is great and the best,.....check out the space i20 offers,...the car is definitely worth the extra money,....anyways you will get around 5ps of extra power, extra space, moreover the korean brand with excellent ride quality | Reply

    Introductory price of i20 not attractive personally i like the car and would love to own it but price is very high ...may they might reduce after a month due to stock piling up at there warehouse.Guys lets wait for a month to own this care i am sure we will get the benefit. | Reply

    The i20 is a way better car than the Swift or Indica.It's safer, it has a greater fuel efficiency,more leg room and more luggage space than it's competition.Besides, external features are way better than Swift or Indica.So,the pricing is just right. | Reply

    hello people.... Hyundai is a very good company....I own two cars Rolls Royce and i10 and there is no comparison between both....i10 is such a lovely car and makes me feel so good when i am driving that..After i bought i10 i sacked my driver from the job and drive the car myself....when i10 and my phantom are parked next to each other they look like brothers i10 being the elder...:) | Reply

    I think i20 is miles above the swift..infact its for a very different class of people. the ones seeking a quality hatchback. the specs and features of the i20 is amazing and so is the quality. i think people who are seeking a comfortable and high quality hatch would only go for this. you can compare this to fabia not to a swift. | Reply

    A word for those Maruti lovers ... please do not compare hyundai with Maruti. The Koreans are far ahead of Maruti in terms of build quality and technology. I have driven Maruti products and now own Hyundai Getz ... what a car. I have owned BMWs, Honda, and Toyotas. Soon Hyundai will be in that league and Maruti will continue to be Maruti. | Reply

    I personally fee that Hyundai technology is extremely advanced. No wonder the i20 would be a car with all the advanced technologies and gadgets but the pricing is not competetive. Here in India only mass selling works, catering to the handful of extravagent customers would not make them recover their cost even and would eventually land as what happened to Elantra. On the other hand Maruti products lack plastic and quality standards especially their interiors and plastics but it would remain an upbeat car in its segment for its POWER, PRICE and especially its BOLD LOOKS. Swift is a countable car for its services, maintainence and would attaract younger generation who tends to find tokyo drift in every mean machine and swift would be the favourite option . In short Hyundai must have give a thought to the POWER output, price being charged and market being catered before launching i20. | Reply

    its so funny seeing others comments totally negative about the car ! Im shocked to see people saying that MSIL has more durable products, with the case of swift , i've driven 3 and the car rattles and audible and it comes up sometimes as early as 5k on the odo. Other than that, somebody asked comparison between Swift Zxi and i20 Asta, yeah asta is priced higher no doubt, but you get extra features also, namely as all beige and brwon interiors, Cooled glow box. Electrically retractable ORVM ( only civic and corrolla and above have them), rear AC vents, far bigger boot space than swift, leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel,luggage lamp and a far better build quality, Zxi OTR delhi is for 5.7 and i20 Asta is for 6.05. For 35k im getting loads of extra features with an added reliability of Hyundai. Talking about engine , yes swift has quite a powerful engine as compared to i20's but the gear ratios and powerful low end torque makes it far more drivable in city, uptil 3000 rpm, i20 is better or equal to swift, and who takes tacho pass 3k each day ? If you do then surely swift is for you, but a general commuter goes go past 3k on regular basis and swift has exceptional bad low end torque , drive that car at low rpms and you will get to know what I'm trying to say. Also, since i20's engine is 1.2L and swift's is 1.3 , I am presuming that i20 would give better fuel efficiency than swift, but this I would re-iterate when i read some reviews. For me atleast i20 sounds perfectly logical when features are more important than a fast engine as in delhi, i dont get any free roads to do a 0-100 sprint each day. | Reply

    You guys have done very well to bring the complete picture of the new i20 hatch from hyundai. But why have they for god's sake, priced the car so heavily? I also believe that the Hyundai management have mentioned that this is an introductory price! I shudder to think what they will revise the pricing to in case they feel the introductory period gets over in a month or two? Or would the market make them prolong the introductory period to well over a year or so? The car industry is notorious for its pricing policies and it is a double shame when it is for a good car like the i20. | Reply

    The I20 is such a neat looking car - if only Hyundai had got the pricing right. Now with the wrong pricing they will make it an also ran like the Fabia. They have to realise the segment they are selling in, and Hyundai is no Mercedes or BMW to charge a premium. | Reply

    Hyundai just didnt know how to price its car yet. why on earth people by a car for just six air bags. rather they can fit 12 bags in a swift and yet save the rest of their money for a round the world trip. korean bosses dont listen to your indian chiefs when pricing a model or else you will eventually lose indian market. | Reply

    Components and build up technique of i20 are superior then any of its previous models in the same league. Meaning, the car will last longer and without major trouble for many years of its use in rough driving conditions that are there in India and similar regions. However, from pricing perspective i20 model might not fit the Indian market. Rather, Hyundai will do a great business by making India as low cost high quality production base for i20 and then export this model worldwide. What ever units it can sell in domestic Indian market is an added benefit to the company. Good car, well designed, comforts are great, driving is a pleasure, fuel efficiency is not bad, at par with similar class Japanese and North American branded cars. This car might be labeled as over priced in Indian domestic market. Owners won’t be disappointed. | Reply

    this is a overpriced car. Hyundai just cannot get the things in place, at a right price. same 1.1L engine is no good at all, i would say getz was much better placed till swift hit the roads this is not even a thinkable option itself.     The move by Hyundai to have six airbags in i20 along with other safety features should be appreciated given the horrible traffic rules that we follow over here on the Indian roads. Hats off to Hyundai!!! Why are thinking that only Honda city and Honda Accord can have 6 airbags. It is not the question of luxury here but the question of safety. In western countries even the taxies have 6 airbags. It is good to see that Hyundai is extending such safety norms to Indians at a relatively affordable price. Think and choose for the money that you are giving what you want: Safety or Luxury. | Reply

    Incorrect pricing by HMIL is a standard feature. They did the same with Getz & have repeated the same with i20. The car other wise appears to be pretty decent but incorrectly priced compared to Swift ZXI. Further, Swift is more powerful. 6 Airbags are not of much use particularly in city driving. | Reply

    in comparison i20 or i30 can't beat Maruti Suzuki's swift or any other model... The material used by Maruti is much more durable & luxurious as compared with Hyundai. | Reply

    i20 is the new Getz and should have replaced ageing Getz inorder to compete with Swift.. I think price wise one can buy sedans like Renault Logan/Swift D-zire. i20 is too pricey.. | Reply

    The car can be good on feature and overall quality might give it an upmarket feel but when you are trying to position it against the crowd pullers like swift and tata indica then you will have to keep the price factor also in mind and by just giving ABS,EBD and 6 air bags you can't expect the customer to woo which is still a luxury for high end salloons. Cars like Honda city and Honda Accord does not come with 6 air bags so 2 would have been much better and that would have also helped to reduce the price factor well within control. Hyundai should not forget European countries have some norms but in India those rules have still time to catch on by then just concentrate on the market dynamics and grab as much as market share they can else the fate of i20 can be very similar to what happened to their much hyped Elantra. | Reply

    Swift's power has been wrongly quoted as 75 PS. It delivers 87 PS (petrol) which is way above the rivals. ET should be careful in its judgements and figures. | Reply
