Honda CR-V: Modest Modifications

Test Drive Honda CR-V

Honda-image-1

Honda Siel Cars India Ltd has launched a new version of the CR-V. The upgraded version is set to bring in higher levels of quality and offer customers more bang for their buck. Vikram Gour checks out the 'new' CR-V to see what's new...

The Honda CR-V is essentially a CBU import that enjoys a strong fan following globally. Its heritage lies in the essence that most people rarely take their SUV's off the tarmac, so why build something that will never be used in the manner that it is designed for. This gave birth to the idea of a soft roader, or an SUV-looking passenger vehicle that had the street presence and commanding driving position of an SUV, yet was designed essentially to stay on the road. A bit of 'light' off roading was still possible thanks to gizmos like the Real Time four wheel drive system, but the vehicle essentially remained a 'car' that looks like an SUV. No doubt the formula was a success and the CR-V has grown in popularity worldwide. Here in India the CR-V has dominated segment of petrol soft roaders and its comfort and drivability is legendary.

Coming to the new or rather refurbished CR-V that Honda Siel recently unveiled, one realizes that the company has not tinkered with the vehicle too much. After all why change a good thing right! Anyways, the latest CR-V happens to be a minor makeover job to possibly give it a very subtle change yet bring out an element of sophistication, which it manages with elan.

Subtle changes seem to be the theme of this particular makeover for at first instance you might be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the outgoing model and the new one from the outside. A closer look reveals a new hood and two step front grille as well as a slightly redesigned front bumper that houses neat oval fog lights. The rear only boasts of a new bumper as well and the result of these changes in the bumpers has lead to a 45mm length extension on the vehicle. The only other exterior change are the new alloys-gone are the 7 spoke and in come in these neat 10 spoke rims that add a sporty touch to the vehicle now

You people really need to go and test drive the cars and really see the difference between a Rav-4 and a CR-V. There is no way you can compare them. The toyota is really cheap interiors very cheap feel drive is really loud engine unrefined. CR-V is really an upmarket car compared to the RAV-4. So please guys first drive and comment do not speculate and ask stupid questions | Reply

the effort from HONDA will not mark high b'coz CR-V can't matches its steps with the big buddies like OUTLANDER or FORTUNER.... even it comes with 5-seater..it is not the perfect kind a SUV afetrall.. | Reply
  • Syed (29 December 2009 11:50)
Toyota FORTUNER, much much better than CRV, this is nothing but high built car with same 5 seater, but Fortuner has 7seater and off road capability with lesser price than CRV. | Reply

This is 2 times the price of this thing in US (minus features too!) And somebody here commented that the CR-V is popular than RAV-4? Please check your facts before commenting. Here in Germany, the number of RAV-4's are atleast 5 times higher than the CR-V! And unlike in India, the CR-V sells with the i-CTDi diesel engine over here. | Reply

Boparai, you must travelling off road everyday and crossing rivers often. Most of us who drive on pavement and usually drive alone for commute, A7 or jumbo SUVs do not make any practicle sense. | Reply

the CR-V in no way is categorized as an SUV...the segment is better known internationally as SOFTROADERS...like the Toyota RAV4 or even the Audi Q5....these machines are designed and built to fit a whole different purpose.... | Reply

Honda is not heavily overpriced...the Indian Government just knows how to make a lot of money on cars.....remove some of the duty strucutres present and you will find that Honda vehicles are actaully very decently priced...for that matter any manufacturer prices their vehicles rather nice...just the tax strucuture creates a mess.....all this taxation is to buffer the indian auto industry....why? nobody knows anymore and the govt is just eating a ton of cash every day in the name of tax..... | Reply
Joe (28 November 2009 03:16) Reply to Subbiah
Toyota RAV4 which will hit the indian market soon, is much more popular than the honda...anyone planning to get an SUV, wait for that one...although like other comments..every forgiegn vehicle is overpriced in india...what a shame! | Reply
Hegde (30 December 2009 14:23) Reply to Joe
don't buy any vehicle that is imported CBU. The customes and taxes make those unviable Buy what is assembled in India. Hope media provides those details to help the buyer . | Reply

Between CRV and RAV no comparision. RAV is an ugly overpriced vehicle. Definitely not more popular than CRV internationally.

its not about economy, smart guy......its about the torque....suv's need more pulling power..to tackle the rogh stuff and carry loads.......and diesels have more of that than petrols. | Reply

honda cars are anyway over priced in india. 24 lacs! actually the global price of Honda CRV is not more than 11 lacs | Reply

not only Honda but all foreign makes of cars are over priced in India | Reply
Prasad Nambiar (30 November 2009 11:59) Reply to sooden
Yep. It s because of the taxation policy of our Government. Middle East countries do not tax automobiles. In fact, most of the products are not taxable there. India, being a poor country, cannot avoid taxing rich guys who have the purchasing power to buy SUVs so that the poor will be benefited from their tax money. So, guys, do not blame Honda. Just find out the percentage of direct tax levied on automobiles in India. You will be amazed!! | Reply
Amit (15 December 2009 05:28) Reply to Prasad Nambiar
You are right my dear. Perhaps for the poor like us, the only phrase left out is be Indian and buy indian. I agree that, Indian product will take couple of years to come up to CR-V like fit and finish. But I am very much sure that Indian manufacturer like Tatas and Mahindras are also trying hard to catch up and my gut feeling is that they will catch it and then poor guys like me need not to worry about Honda CRV. I will be settle down in either in Mahindra scorpio or Tata safari or Tata sumo grande.

Guys check out the new car prices. Bigger engines SUV are available in india at much cheaper price as compared to CRV. | Reply

Other than the Endeavour, that looks like a very big bad beast, I dont know of any qualifed SUVs available at a price lesser than CRV. Mind you, a price difference of 20-50 K will not matter for a person spending Rs. 2 Million plus on his car. | Reply
