First Drive: Maruti Suzuki A Star

Photography : Kunal Khadse         19 Nov 2008

Maruti Suzuki A Star

Overall, the car is well proportioned and has a wide stance, that gives the car its international look and as promised by MSIL officials, this stance also offers for better drivability, but more of that later, right now we got to see what lies under the hood.

A new engine for a star

The A-Star ushers in a new series of engines for MSIL. Known as the KB series, this engine is a brand new petrol drinking unit that promises better performance and efficiency as it is modern and encompasses technologies of today. Till date the J series engine has proved to be extremely reliable but the time has come to move forward and further enhance the engine.

The new KB 10B engine, the first of the KB series to be manufactured right now is a 998cc, 3 cylinder unit that has a high compression ratio of 10:1 and delivers 67PS @ 6200 rpm and a noteworthy torque o f 90Nm@3500 rpm. It is this engine that will power both the domestic and export versions of the A-Star hatchback.

The new lightweight aluminium engine boasts of low NVH levels, enhanced fuel efficiency and linear performance throughout the powerband. Salient features of the new engine include an all plastic engine manifold, a smart distributor-less ignition system with dedicated plug top coils and advanced injectors plus an innovative rocker-less DOHC shaft. The engine has been further optimized by using light weight pistons and nutless conrods. All this has lead to the engine having a dry weight of just 47 kilograms.

So, we have a new car and a new engine, but as they say, paper and tarmac speak two different languages and it's in this translation that we get to know just what mettle a vehicle really packs.

A Driver's hatchback

Firing up the 3 pot cylinder engine block, I watch the rev counter steady itself. Idle. The 'retro' tacho, if I may call it that, seems to be telling me that this might be a small car, but it's sporty all right. I take the cue and head out to open roads. I shift my way into 5 th gear just as I finally hit the wide open expressway leading to Greater Noida. I gun the engine to see what everything I've seen and heard about this car till today has amounted to.

The plastic induction on the KB series engine gives out a pronounced purr, the car moves as though there is a bigger engine under the hood, and getting up to speeds where a traffic cop would just love to 'chalan' you at, I found myself pleasantly taken aback by the fact that this car can move and how!

The little engine does its duty well and just loves to be revved. The all new 5 speed gearbox is a tad bit notchy, but a big improvement when compared to 'boxes' that do duty in the Wagon R or Zen Estilo.

The power assisted steering wheel provides decent feedback and even at high speeds it never felt too light or as though the driver has lost touch. MSIL has taken special care to ensure that the driver get his dues in terms of a small hatch that has genes of a sports car.

The wide stance of the car also helps a great deal in keeping this little 2 box well planted to the road even at speeds above 140 km/h. It's surprising enough as it is, but the only thing that came to my mind was the fact that the A-Star is an out and out driver's car. It's small, manageable, yet has that zest that if I were to reminisce would remind me of the peppiness that the older Zen had.

The A-Star boasts of utilizing gas damped suspension all round, wherein the front suspension has been tweaked for enhanced handling and the rear is more in line with enhanced ride comfort. The best of both worlds is what MSIL has set out to do, and judging from the ride quality it seems that their formula worked. Of course some of the credit in terms of ride also goes to the 155/R13 tubeless tyres that comes as standard on the A-Star.

Braking is provided by ventilated discs up front and drums at the rear. ABS is onboard to ensure proper braking even under difficult conditions, which also adds to the safety of this car.

MSIL has fitted the A-Star with front airbags to ensure a high level of safety. Further to this, the A-Star's body is based on the Total Effective Control Technology (TECT) concept in the form of crushable structures that absorb impact energy and then disperse the energy away from the occupants in the event of a collision. I just took MSIL's word for this, and have no intention of actually testing this feature, but it does feel good to know that such a small car now comes with so many safety measures. The benefit truly goes to the customer.

The brief drive does reveal that the A-Star can live up to its sport overtones, and though I could not get any figures in terms of fuel efficiency, I have been informed by MSIL that the figures will delight me when I do a full blown road test, but from the looks of it, and knowing MSIL's history of providing fuel efficient small cars, I wouldn't really argue with them too much on that front.

As I head back, after my drive I cannot but help to think that the new A-Star is the new hot hatch in town. Other cars in the A2 segment have their job cut out in terms of competition, and the A-Star is sure going to rough things up a bit.

A full blown road test of this new kid in town will reveal more, but from the looks of it, MSIL has a star in their A2 segment portfolio. It's a crowded segment to be in, but the A-Star seems destined to soak in the limelight, for that is what 'stars' do.

You find only the boot space smaller. Nice peppy drive. Great pick up and mileage, in and out of city. | Reply

The A-Star is a brilliant car. Test drove it today. Excellent driving position, very peppy engine, great ride and handling and good brakes. Quite easily the best small car in the country right now. | Reply

There is no comparision if A star with i10 , as i10 on all parameters is better than A star . Even Nissan has cancelled its order of 40,000 vehicles of A star for europe market ( Export ). If we compare all the factors & parameters of A star , almost all the features are already there in GM spark at much cheaper rate ( almost Rs 65000 cheaper ) 90 Nm torque 63 bhp of power great mileage of 16 kmpl on road , safety , tubeless tyre , more inner space . Yes if you can add 1 lacs more than no doubt i10 is much better than the A star . But for 65k less almost all the feature are there in GM Spark . | Reply

Hi Guys, I bought the A star couple of weeks back after long consideration with i10. Before going to buy any car you should be copare it with the relabilty and the segment you are interesting for. When i compared it with I10 the 3 factors are came in picture the price, maintenace, fuel eff in that Astar is better then I10 . whoever knows about Hundai they very well know about the millage of its cars and its maitence cost. When you talk about the boot space and the rear seat comfort , if yopu are really looking a A2 segment then only compare with A2 seg don't with any other segment. Yes swift is better Room space but whats it fuel efficency just 8km P/L in city.So Guys compare it with Apple to Apple. Good thing i found with Astar are :- - New Design -New Aluminium Engine with the best milliage in this egment. -Good Ride quality. -Relaiable onSuzuki Maintenance Some one here talking about copy cat . istrongly disagree with that comment with the clear fact. Nissan is going to launch the same car with the Name of Nissan Pixo in other market with Auot Varrient option . so who talks about the copy cat from Nission can you guys go back and look the Pixo and give the Thumps Up to our Indian Design. | Reply

guys.. i have purchased the A Star Vxi.. The car is excellent... Gr8 pick up and power.. excellent mileage.. has given a mileage of 16 Kmpl to me for the 1st 400 Kms and that too w/o the 1st servicing... should improve further... the space in the car( as according to a small car !!) is GOOD....!! i mean one cannot actually compare it to a sedan, indica or a swift...!! The A Star is altogether of a different segement..!! although i do agree that the boot space is VERY LESS..!! Is just enough to pack in a few small suitcases and the veggies which my mom may get :P , but hey...!! we ain't gonna take this car outside the city..!! ;) If you do want a car which is HIGHLY FUAL EFFICIENT, RELIABLE AND GOOD ON INTERIORS AND SPACE, just go for it... The best part is, its got an inbuilt stereo(excellent sound quality) and power windows(rear windows also) ... | Reply

First look, I liked this car a lot and almost booked it the day it launched. The reason was that, the car has trendy looks from both outside and inside. But when i looked inside i found that the boot space is too small. eg, If you have rear speaker tray is installed then boot space is as big as a 16inch suitcase and without tray might be a 26" inch one !! Secondly, the rear leg room is so bad that I have to place my feet under the front seat and my knees touch the front seat. No, I am just 5'10". Thirdly, not sure 998CC engine will be comfortable with AC+4 people. Even considering the mileage of 19Km/lt under city condition which is more by 4Km in case of zen/wagonR or less than 2 in case of Alto. I cannot ignore that it also cost nearly 40K more the wagonR/zen(ABS/ABS,1 air bag) or about 1.5lac more than old Alto ! Blore'ians, this car had waiting period of 3-4 months on Nov 25, and on Dec 12 its reduced to 2-3 days@BIMAL !!!!! | Reply

it's a nice car.it is has more settled ride,it engine is very refined,it has good mid torque,it feels realy solid, buil quality in this car is better than any small maruti cars, front seats r very comfortable, even at the back space is not a problem especially compared to it segment,if you want more space you should have to buy bigger car not the A2 segment car, roof space is enough as this car has very setteled ride, width of rear sead from inside is 1cm more than i10 rear leg room is 1cm short than i10,in i10 u feel more space but when u measure in cm it almost the same diffrence is the boot space where i10 scores higher,in terms of driveability, fule efficiency, ride quality, front seat comfort, features, value for money a star is better than i10.a-star 0-100 is qicker than i10 Iride written auto magazines.i have bought the car after comparing with i10 since i thought i10 is also a good car but i found a-star better to my taste.sSO DON'T CRITICISE ANY THING BEFORE YOU CHECK IN REAL. | Reply

I agree to Nicole.. Its a copy of Nissan and Toyata Yaris from bodywork.. Saying its a new design!! Well, it's debatable.. I can't understand when the Alto is near to the end it's life cycle why Maruti can't facelift the alto and give it a better shape / come up with an efficeint angine and gearbox?? It does not make sense that they are coming up with a new design in putting in the same segment... The thing these ppl can't undertand is whats the point of creating your own Rival??? Hpoe it does not go ahead from the Concept stage... | Reply

Could it b compared with i10.i hav taken test drive pick up gear shift r hopeless and worthless. Interior space is very less.oficial fig says boot space even less than Alto .cost wise on higher side . Totaly useless and copy cat design | Reply
