Good show Fiat!

The Grande Punto follows Fiat's new philosophy of cars just like the Linea. It is spacious, driver friendly, a great handler and good value for money too. Both petrol and diesel options offer a good mix of adequate power and fuel efficiency as well. At 9kmpl for the petrol and 12kmpl for the diesel they may not be the most frugal machines ever built but they get the job done. The Grande Punto definitely gets brownie points for being an absolute head turner too. So all in all, it's a sexy looking car that makes for a pleasurable driving experience.

Gone seem to be the days when Fiat was looked upon with an eye of suspect in the Indian market - the number of Lineas doing the rounds in major cities countrywide is a prime example of that. So if you've fallen in love with this car at first site, we reckon you can't go wrong. One piece of advice though - she looks really hot in red!

    Punto rocks. Avoid the ACTIVE though, the Emotion gives much better value for money. Reason is Fiat threatens with warranty void for any accessory you get from outside. Other than that, it is an engineering dream! | Reply

Well! U shud had gone for 1.4 FIRE or 1.3 MJD which is a proven diesel engine. 1.2L Petrol for a car heavy as this one is little underpowered!! | Reply

Hi Suhas, Congratulation on your pick. I bought my Emotion pk Multijet in March 2010. First servcie done at Rs. 0. This car is simply awesome. great feel of safety, good control, great suspension, simply irons out the potholes, mileage is between 12 - 14 KMPL, but one does not need to change gears pretty often as it has plenty of torque available at lower revs. | Reply

I suggest Fiat Punto. Fiat is the best manufacturer of diesel engines in the world. Even maruti is buying diesel engines from Fiat for their cars.Figo is good but got lot of problems, like service and maintainance issues. | Reply

i think you should go with 1.3mjd if you want power go for 1.4 fire or if want low maintance go for 1.3mjd | Reply

There is no doubt that swift diesel is a very good car and also has a better acceleration than the punto but the feel you get driving a punto overshadows everything. I just got my Punto Multijet and its an awesome drive. From the smooth transmission to the Pick up, I just love it. The other smart features like the de-mister that goes off automatically after 20 mins, the 'follow me home' head lights, the multi function display etc are the icing on the cake. I nearly went for the Swift VDi, now I am real glad that I didn't. | Reply

Zigwheel and most of the other magzines gives paid reviews. I have seen the reviews on T.V also called RAFTAAR and all. They all are crap. I believe the test drive people do not know how to drive and what is driving pleasure all about. Guys just do not get confused with Zigwheels and all. Drive Punto. You will come to know about the driving pleasure and sharp turns. Punto is the best hatch in its segment. You will always feel confident while driving it. After all its drive by wire. This guy has some minimum speed for every gear, you do not need to press accelerator in Traffic jams. You can drive this beauty like a automatic transmission car. I am driving my punto multijet for last 1 months and its superb. Mileage in City 18 and on high way 24 (at 80 KMPH) I am getting. There are so many features which most of the cars does not offer like instantaneous fuel consumption and many more. | Reply

    Beware of Rama Motors Pvt. Ltd. A-87, Okhla Industrial Area, Phase II New Delhi - 110020.I recently purchased Fiat Punto Active 1.2 from the above showroom. The salesperson was Manish Bajaj. I was told by him that currently, the Central Locking is not compatible with this car and very soon Minda and Autocops would be coming out with a compatible one.When I took the delivery of the car on 30th January and asked him to get the fog lamps fitted. Then, I was told that by installing the fog lamps, the warranty of the car would be void. This raised my suspicion and searched on the net. I came to know that even if the current models of Central Locking can be fitted. However, this would make the warranty void. Fiat came out with an offer of providing total warranty period of 50 months as a promotion.I think that its unethical to provide this kind of information to the buyers and I really feel that I have been cheated. I even spoke with the supervisor Aditya and all he could do was apologise. The showroom GM SK Verma never took my calls. | Reply

Fiat has come out with a central locking system that is compatible(marketed with Fiat label, I think made by Autocop). It is available with Auto Sterling NOIDA. It costs around Rs 4000/=. It will not void your warranty. They also have a reverse sensor for about the same price which I got fitted on my GP Emotion Pack multijet during my first servicing. I must also add that it is a great car. Mixed running is giving an average of 21 km . | Reply

Dont expect service like Honda from these TATA dealers who are used to sell Indicas to Taxi drivers. An exellent product is getting disrepute due to poor handling by TATA dealers. Punto Emo Pk Mjt is my third car. Experience with Hind motors Mohali was a haunting. It was a real nightmare. They run like Govt of India rather than a car dealership. | Reply

So far I have had experience with two TATA dealers - ASPI motors Ahmedabad, where I bought my GP Emotion Pack Multijet, and Auto Sterling NOIDA where I got my first servicing done. I found that the overall experience with both dealers was very good. As compared to this, my experience with the Maruti dealers has been relatively bad - maybe they handle much more customers. | Reply

If you want to play safe buy the Swift. If you want a better product with its vagaires of service, parts and plain irresposible service centers, buy the Fiat. Youcant win everything. | Reply

Don't try to get any wires cut in the vehicle. It will void the warranty. Look out for cufflers, which does not have to cut wires. | Reply

dude..this car is made heavy for safety reasons and it really needs the 1.6 litre MJD engine. But then the pricing would go high and we price concious indians will end up saying that the car is overpriced. BUt if u r desperately looking for a scorching performance from the MJD punto go for a petes tuning kit which will increase the power to 90 bhp. this car for now is meant to be a cruiser in india not a scorcher. | Reply

I am not sure whether it will be a good idea to 'Pete' the GP. I refer to http://www.tuninglinx.com/html/fiat-grande-punto-22.html.This is part of a write-up on the GP. As per this, the gearbox for the 75 bhp may not be able to handle the additional torque generated by the "Pete' tuning kit. My last message got truncated.

    i bought a fiat punto emotion PK yesterday and i am regretting it.i would prefer a swift or a Wagonr anyday..it broke down on the first day...AC is not effective and seats are very uncomfortable...audio system has very bad clarity and on top of that TATA is doing the servicing????i would never reccomend a punto...Even if it was sold to me for 1 lac | Reply

I have GP multijet1.3 emotion Pack... sufficient to put people in awe with its looks and accessories. On highways no one (upto10 lakh cars) can catch it. Go on long drives and you will come back loving this beautiful beast. It is best value for money.. I am loving it... I am driving emo pk mjt for 6 months now. no complaints on service, spare parts, excellent feedback from TATA. Add to it wonderfull experience of driving a real beauty with solid feel, lot-n-lots of features and good riding quality. Understand yours is a very rare bad experience with this wonderfull car. In continuation to my earlier reply , i just want to add one thing. It really looks so odd, people expect 1.9 engine for 5 lakhs, space like a sedan. The same set of people never complains when it comes to maruti , they are ready to take anything. Close the door of maruti / hyundai or for that matther any hatch back and then try Fiat GP. u will find the difference . Its strong biuld.for 5~6 lakhs one shud not expect Ferrari performance. | Reply

Hey I too Bought GP Active , its almost 3 month now and its simply -- look wise beauty , performance excellent. I am getting around 13 KM/L in Delhi Road. Handling is superb, i simply love. I really did not have any problem as on date. Fiat called me at least on 3 ocassion for feedback on satisfaction on GP ownership, some survey, and enquired if i am facing an y profile. I dont wnat to comment ur experience , but do not generalize. Guys its a Good Car , the Value for money any if u ask me i will say its any time better than the maruti or for that matter any hatch back in that price range , what ever it may be.     The Indian version of the Punto diesel is underpowered as the 1.3 engine is too tiny for the weight of this vehicle. This car is powered by a 1.9TDi in the international markets and gives even better fuel economy PLUS performance which the Indian version lacks. The skoda octavia gives 14 kmpl in the city and 23 Kmpl on the highway/expressway. | Reply

    Punto MJD is easily the diesel option. its has good power and weight ratio. its good for relaxed driving. mileage is excellent with or without ac. handling is great and hgh speed and its very safe. suspension is class, perfect for indian roads. to sum it up , Punto MJD is the best! | Reply

    Went for long drive(Bangalore - Cochin) with my GP MJD(Active) last weekend. Car showed a mil of 25.6 km/l in trip meter for the distance covered of 550 KM!. My car just crossed 1000 KM mark also during this drive.. Never crossed 100 km/hr or 2500 rpm and this may be contributed to good mileage! | Reply

Ihave just booked GP em pk 1.3. and i am very much facinated by it. i was quiete reluctant to buy one as i wanted to desparetely by a honda jazz. sadly there r no desiel options. the i20 is good but not charming..... punto looks fabulous, although i feel they should have made the rear better but its typically italian abarth design. the black grey interiors looks dull - nonsport. they should have had supplied with body colour matching interior fitouts(at a cost). the test drive i took was simply great. i hope the tatas and fiats give a good after sale service...anyone has tired to connect his iphone with blue | Reply

    HI rahul, I know internationally Bravo offers 1.4, 1.6, 1.9 And even 2.0 ltr multijet engines. I quite agree with you that 1.9 may not be as fuel efficient as 1.3 . The palio I have is 1.9 ltr D engine, but the point is that the 1.9 multi jet is a beast with 6 speed gear. Even my palio 1.9 D is like a small SUV. I can just go anywhere, on matter who steep the road is, palio will handle it with ease. And my palio 1.9 D gives 9 KPL in city which is ok. TC | Reply

    similarly, linea is better than 1.4 ford durtaorq and 1.5 verna in 3rd and 4th gears. and by a good margin. may i quote some stats- this would be interesting for fiat seekers. linea, with a 1.3 engine has bhp/torque or 86/20.7. 20-40 in 3rd gear is 11.86 second and 40-100 in 4th gear is 13.64 seconds. same figures for fiesta 1.4 are 68/16.0, 12.52 sec, 16.37 sec. and , for verna, it is 110/24, 12.52 sec, 16.75 sec.for optra 2.0 tdi , it is 120/32.10, 12.80 sec, 14.90 sec. this has left me a bit confused. my question is - if we are comarping only 3rd and 4th gear figures , then is linea even better than 1.4,1.5 and 2.0 engines. i agree that more bhp and torque will enable the user speed up in the 1st and 2nd gears. but, would that extra bhp and torque mean that there be a considerable difference in 3rd gear while accelerating a linea and an optra.another question, is a bigger engine necessarily reqd to pull a heavier car, or is it the way it has been tuned. i do not know the answers. the salesmen have their own stories. no one seems to be trained technically. perhaps someone out here will answer it. hello, mr. talwar :-) | Reply

    nandan, thanks. mr. talwar, you said you are an expert on diesel version. i have a question for you . when i studied fiat - punto and linea, i found that the torgue is good in midranges, i.e. the 20-80 and 40-100 figures are better than anyone in the competition. i assume the advatages are that one will not have to downshift in the 3rd and 4the gears. are there any disadvantages as well. gp, for instance , is better than 1.4 i20 in 3rd and 4th gears. it is better than the fabia and its cousins - vista, ritz and swift , which are considerably lighter. | Reply

    Grande Punto is great car at an affordable price. I have almost test driven all the car in Indian roads but I found this car to be a great value for money. Yes you cant find all qualities in one car but when you compare it with what you are spending its a great buy. Punto is far better then swift in every way. Personally I would sugget you to go for Fiat Punto MJD Emotion PK for the amount of goodies and more than that the way the car feels. I mean looks/ride/handling/safety/build. For performance don't look at the figures but drive it in person the way you drive and see by your self if its sluggish or suits your way of driving. | Reply

    I own a Palio 1.9 Diesel, It is one of the best machine I ever had. And very true Rahul B about what U said ( You dont buy a FIAT because u NEED it, you buy FIAT because u WANT it.... ) My dad has bought Punto 1.3 multi-jet , and I have fallen in love with this car. And for those how are worried about the fuel efficiency, let me tell u - we had been to Pune and back to Mumbai ( with AC ) with 22 KPL average. And in city ( with AC ) Punto multi-jet gives around 16 KPL average. Now I am just waiting for Bravo which is again a 1.9 L engine. | Reply

    yes, there has been a lot of talk about PERFORMANCE. compare the specs. in any metro city, except that initial thrill /pride of leaving the traffic behind, what purpose does the 0-100 solve. please compare the 20-80 in third gear and 40-100 in fourth gear. punto, when compared with i20, fabia, swift, indica had the best ( or maybe 2nd best) figures. and, that too, for a car which is heavier and safer by almost 200 kgs. hyundai in its i20 and even verna, has good figures in 1st and 2nd gear. may i ask, in which gear would you be driving your car the most. and, if you are in 1st or 2nd gear, how would moving ahead make any difference. give fiat a break. do not compare it with the likes of swift, which doesnt even offer abs and airbags , not to talk about the wonderful electronic features , even in its higher version. compare the rear bench. compare the gear shift. i do not know anything about engine. my simple logic is - if this car is so successful worldwide, it will just take a bit of time in india. fiat suffers from its old image. if it is able to deliver on after sales service, you will find a lot of puntos on road by 2010 for sure. but , of course the consideration of people WANTING a fiat is always different. | Reply

    it seems there is a penchant for getting first of the blocks at the red light in india. then, comes the average and the resale value. only maruti, hyundai and honda will give you the highest resale values. so , if you have those considerations, kindly do not look at fiat. maruti and hyundai have been the greatly successful in the 'people's car' segment. honda has no doubt given good cars but is also charging a decent premium for its cars. consider the following if you want fiat :styling and design of the car ( ever watched its contours) , amazing ride and handling ( feel the way the car responds to the steering ), stability at higher speeds ( go beyond 80-100 in a maruti or hyundai and you will appreicate the difference ), safety ( you can be assured that unless the accident is fatal, only the bumpers will need repairs ) engine technology ( do we have any other car manufcturer with 1.3 litre mulitjet )drive a fiat to feel the difference. | Reply

    Akash.I got MJT Emoton pk. Blue and me, 15" alloys, Balupunkt music system, are features in 15lkh cars and are unheard in Maruti/Hyundai cars. Add to it Auto climate, ABS, EBD, Air Bags, Front and Rear Fog lamps, Details display with Instant cinsumption per ltr, Average consumtion per ltr, Averarage speed per trip, beep for speed limit and many more which I am not mentioning here. Boot is 350 ltrs. Swift offer 230 ltrs. No offence to Maruti and Hyundai guys, but this car is generation ahead than most of Maruti and Hyundai cars. Even Jazz with 7.9 lakh tag offers much lesser features than Punto Emotion pk. Reg no on road, I enquired from Tata dealerships in Chandigarh. They have sold more than 90 cars in one month and this car suddenly has gone into waiting period. Ruby, Please wait for one more year for numbers | Reply

In India you see lots of Maruti Suzuki cars on road as compared to any other manufacturers cars and its just because indian middle class will look for just one thing in a car and that is "How cheap it can get to own and to run". If that was not the case then you would have seen more Maruiti suzuki balenos than a Honda city in india!!. And one more thing. For me a car is not only a cheap to run box on 4 wheels or something which has great A.S.S but its more than that. Guys lets not think about ONLY "Fuel Economy, A.S.S, CC, BHP, 0-60 or 0-100 figures or even for that matter goodies (which can be fitted later) that you get with a car. ALSO Consider following points when you say a car is good or bad.1. Looks (Does matter)2. Price3. Build quality4. Safety features5. Ride quality6. Space (To atleast accommodate 4 adults comfortably since most of the cars according to manufacturers are 5 seaters).7. Handling (Cornering at decently high speed)8.     RUBY: you are tiring us. Swift is a Bharat 3 and Punto is Bharat 4 compliant. Plus Punto is a heavier car. That is why you have the sluggish 1st and 2nd gear. However, you can drive at any speed between the 3rd to 5th Gear. Swifts body start making noises after a few hundred kms. It is Suzuki's best car till date but do not match Punto's build quality and Euro NCAP 5 star rating, | Reply

    @Frank: I am driving Punto for more than a month now. It is facinating experience. 6.10 lakhs for this wonder and lavish experience is far batter VFM than Swift/ Desires. Any talk about it being sluggish is nonsence. Afterall you do not want to fly a car in 1st gear. It is a wonderfull domesticated pet and offers very smooth surge in power in 3rd/4th/5th gears. I can assure you Swift, Desires, Indicas are no match to its stability, handling and power in top gears and I have not seen any of Maruti cars / Sedans getting ahead of me on highways | Reply

    Way to go SKB and Alex. Its a diff experience driving a GP, the rickety marutis with their spartan interiors are no match for it. Imagine what does a top end maruti offer, just air conditioner and power windows, for rest everything even small tit bits like backseat tray, they want to squeeze every penny out of you. I got my GP emotion with everything factory fitted and still it cost around 20 grand less than a swift vdi after fitting all those after market accessories that I already have in my GP, which is a bigger, better and most importantly safer car than its competitors.Talk about value for money | Reply

    There is no proper after sales service / spares by Tata motors (similar to service provided for FIAT Palio or Fiat Stile). If you have lot of money to put on a brand that was famous in the past...then go for it. But Linea/Punto have a predecessor whcih is the FIAT UNO which is not a success in India...Mind it ! | Reply

    Hi all Fiat fans,Recently test drove fiat GP 1.2. I had a perception that it is terribly under powered by going thru the spec and reading the comments from auto journos. I got the test vehicle, a half white colored GP active 1.2. Started the engine ,switched on the A/C, slotted into first gear and moved. It was peppy in first three gears. The power delivery was smooth void of any flat spots. I was enjoying the drive from the word go. I could feel it is short geared, but for a such a heavy car, It didn't feel heavy while driving. Fiat has tuned the engine superbly for low end torque. Any one considering swift or indica vista or i10 should try this variant b4 making a decision. I'd recomend this car over swift anyday. | Reply

    I was to decide between RITZ vdi and Punto diesel. I took test drive of both but was very much disappointed by Punto's sluggish performance. Such a nice built car (red is ultimate) but while accelerating and overtaking it was damn poor as compare to RITZ. I wonder why a word 'PERFORMANCE' is missing in FIAT's dictionary. | Reply

    the car is awesome.. I have owned BMW and Fiat Palio 1.6. I love Palio anyday. BMW is tiring - not recommended for long drive or daily use.You can live in Palio day in and day out...I love the look of Punto, but Fiat is not offerrning little monster engines anymore :(Anyway, if I have to buy (I still have Palio), I will buy Punto anyday..90bhp is not 100 bhp,, but I suppose looks can compensate for that. Jazz is filmy build so is fabia.. i10 looks like a kid car. Sorry, there is no competation. If you value everyday of your life, then go with Punto.. just the name is so exciting..you can also paint shark like teeth on front grill. it wud look awesome :) | Reply

    Hi allSeems like there is some kind of confusion regarding the so-called issues regarding GP.Even the ziggies are not making it clear enough.May I , as a minor automobile afficiondo and a very VERY satisfied Palio user put in my humble suggestions?OK here we go..1.To all those mud brained who says that the Swift and even the Dzire gives better power/mileage.Have you ever compared the body weights and tyre ratios of these two cars with that of the GP's????I dont think so.It is pure common sense that when the body weight increases and the tyres are wider ,the power as well as mileage on the same type of engine wil be affected.Correct me if i am wrong :D.2.In direct comparison,without any real world crash tests I will always trust my family and my kids inside a FIAT on a highway or in the city for that matter than inside anything made by Maruti or Honda or Hyundai.Even Toyota small car will be safer than these three.3.Service by TATA maybe an issue as is expeced but as for spares are concerned from what I have read on the forums and the leading auto mags the new Fiats are cheaper.Mind you,I dont have a GP or Linea so I am not saying I have first hand exp.I am sure ziggie can check it out for all of us :) right ziggie?And finally,from my experience "Once a FIAT ,always a FIAT :)" thats my experience till now.Nothing ABSOLUTELY nothing comes even close to FIAT in terms of driving pleasure.And my next one will be a FIAT unless TATA bungles up :D.PS:I purchased my Palio 1.2 arnd 3 years back and i needed to visit the service centre only 3 or 4 times for anything other than the rust problem on the silencer/exhaust pipe!!!!!     well..........., punto car is a good pakage of desighing and interior ,but shocked to see the price in todays world(compititive world especially infront of i10 and swift) of the same(punto car).As far as i am concerned it will be difficult for especially village people to get parts of the sameAs far as looks are concerned it should have been something differnt,if coping the looks would have been their opion then , they would have done of cars ranging 10lacs\ 10lacs according to me innova and i10(but not i20) is a far better option.     I have been driving an adventure for last 5 years and the real pleasure of it comes now when I compare it with other 5 year old cars. The comfort and drive quality of Fiat cars are awsome. However, I agree to have strategic partnership of sharing infrastructure with TATA for after sales and spare part availability, but not let Tata act solely on behalf of Fiat as they are confused of the ownership. No doubt Tata is a great ethical Company, but Fiat should take responsibility of making spare parts available cheaper and faster. | Reply

    Hi, We (my cousin's) got our Punto delivered yesterday and took a milage check as we had reservations and also saw a lot of words on that front from people. The round trip to Mysore from Bangalore, covering 378 kms consumed 19.2 lts. from full tank to full fill. That's 19.5 kms/lt. with 3 passangers. That's a pretty decent milage for a vehicle with 60kms on odometre.(new vehicle) The drive and confidence inspiring aspect control is far better than any other vehicle in the segment. I felt it's the best vehicle on road as of today. | Reply

Wish the DZire had electrical ORVMS and Distance to Empty and Mileage features on the dash. That would make it complete and not want anyone to look around.     I have been using Palio for the last six years and am totally satisfied with the performance and also the mileage in Mumbai. The only concern is service and spares are comparatively very expensive. I do appreciate the quality of the Car and the engineering aspects. But should focus more on the service and spares to match maruti's standard. Now the second point is the Sales part of it. You dont expect TATA to sell your vehicle when they have vehicle in the same category at a much cheaper rate. Please look into the possibility of having sales office at least in Metros. | Reply

    I saw the car in metal at a showroom in Bangalore... looks really superb and also the built quality was very impressive (I was just impressed with the way the doors shut!). But I was somehow not convinced with the way TATA sells these superior Fiat products... The sales people seem to be confused as to which product they should be selling to the customer. As mentioned by many here, Fiat should break free and have a better management to make a good impact with us Indians. Not everyone who wants to purchase a car would go for a test drive or read books or reviews, its just word of mouth marketing which makes or breaks a product... and in Punto's case, Fiat's poor after sales service and poor mileage could be the talking point, which will only kill this cute looking, well engineered car, all the best to Fiat on their new car launch | Reply

    I want to let the MD of Fiat India know that just making good cars is not good enuff and he shud know it better than anybody else. It was so disappointing to know recently that the best dealer in bangalore(manipal motors) for tata/fiat cars has stopped servicing(and selling) fiat cars due to non-availibility of spare parts. owing a palio for last 6 years has been always been a mix of awesome driving pleasure and horrible service experience. thinking of buying another fiat car ... very difficult choice ... brilliant cars but will i be able to get a sidelamp mirror if it gets broken ( i waited 6 months for it for my palio :-)) ... Mr. MD, tata is a great partner but they obviously are in a fix after JLR takoever and they need to maximize their own car sales. Will it really harm you to have a few exclusive dealers in top 10 cities of India to begin with ... you have got good products now with good sales, i am sure you will be able to find a few good dealers to work with PS:zigwheels, i have been trying to post this in fait website but their contact us tool does not work, pl help in passing this on to somebody in fiat. i really wish they succeed so that we continue to see these beauties on indian roads. | Reply

    Too much boring stuff about fuel efficiency and all that Jazz, oops, that is a bad word here in a Fiat story methinks! Someone wrote about largest tyres in class and here is another giveaway to fuel consumption - the larger the contact patch, the more the traction, the more the fuel is consumed. It is not anything but simple physics. Secondly do check out the gear ratios and the gap in between third and fourth. Torque seems to be centred just beyond the useable range but this dissipates when you really want forward motion. Finally, can there be a better turbocharger than what is presently powering my Linea? Someone should ask Fiat this question. Zigwheels can you do that for us? | Reply

    Thanks Zigwheels for giving us a complete overall impression which suggests the Grande Punto is a fine car. This is perhaps Fiat's last chance in India but what is it about its engines? In fact the Multijet made by Maruti Suzuki is even more impressive, fluid in its delivery and super efficient. Why can't Fiat match this sort of drive and torque delivery considering it is the originator of such an engine? I have a Linea with me and it sure seems to be gasping for breath whenever I need to overtake. The lag is pronounced detracting from an overall experience. Going by the response generated, I must compliment Zigwheels for their coverage which is well informed and researched but even more credible for their bold approach to let any and everyone from here to Timbuctoo write in their comments, qualified or not. Me and my workmates nevertheless found it interesting to read comments of such a colourful nature. Are they inspired, genuine or what? Seems the response is the same as in the case of the Uno and the Palio which promised much but proved to be croppers. A majority of the comments makes many wonder whether they have seen a Grande Punto in the metal let alone driven it? | Reply

    As someone who has been reading motoring journals for a long time, I can see an anti-Adil flavour in many a comment. Is it because they got the cars first or whether they hate his guts? Seems a case of pretty spiked comments by disgruntled former colleagues maybe? Hmmmm... it has been known to happen before as well. As to the verdict on Zigwheels, let us wait before anyone of us also drives the cars and finds out whether we concurr with them or not otherwise firing from the hip seems to be it. | Reply

    I think some one needs to go and drive the Puntos, they are a bundle of mixed delights. On one hand the mid-range is good but on the top end both 1.4 and Multijet 1.3 seem to hit the wall. Maybe soemthing to dow ith the gearing which could impact fuel efficiency also. I speak after driving both of them in Mumbai and am in broad agreement with the verdict outlined. Maybe there is too much emotion in these comments from imbeciles who haven't driven the cars but speak with such authority like experts. Grow up and be mature is what me and my wife would say. | Reply

    Fiat cars always have the best suspension set-up. They just need to improve the engine technology and that is one thing they have been ignoring since Uno. FIAT will not make an impact without change in engine tech. They have larger displacement engines with less power. With their cars weighing more than ton, this does'nt help. Suzuki makes lighter but less sturdier cars but are sprighlty in performance and are efficient. FIAT are u listening!! | Reply

    I today drove the 1.3 Multijet. I am interested in the 1.4 Petrol, but the dealer in Mumbai is yet to receive it. I'm not much of a car reviewer and most terminology used in these spots kind of goes over my head, but I thought the response in the 1st and 2nd gears is very very flat. It's only when you you move to the 3rd gear the car seems to show some character. Mumbai being a 1st and 2nd gear kind of city, this really bothered me a lot. I'm sure all the promises on FE are going to be bunked by the extremely flat 1st and 2nd. I hope the Petrol is lighter and is more responsive.The interiors are fine and boot space seems adequate to go pick up international fliers. I do a lot of that. The Blue and Me feature kind of blows you away and might sway you in a weak moment to choose the car, but a TD can sweep that all away. It also seemed a little cramped all around but especially for the driver. I am 5ft 10 in and weigh in at 85 Kgs so you can imagine the space I am talking about. I've booked a DZire ZXI scheduled for August 3rd week delivery and am wondering whether to cancel that booking for the GP. Would love to hear comments on that. | Reply

    There is no mention of the 1.2 engine. The company only offers the 1.4 petrol for test drive and it is difficult to tell whether the 1.2 is underpowered or not. Why have not tested the 1.2? | Reply

    @ Karthik:The FE figures quoted here are the test figures that our Chief Road Tester Dilip Desai got on the Grande Puntos that were made available to us. These were fresh from the factory and so yes, it could be an issue with the particular cars that we got. As far as your decision to buy the Grande Punto goes, we urge you to read the complete Road Test - especially the last few lines of the verdict and then make your decision instead of just reading the comments about the FE figures like most others here are doing. We liked the Punto - if not as much for its performance, for its amazing handling, space and looks. Hope that helps. | Reply

    Relax!We are not buying even a word that is written here.Grande Punto is that Giugiaro designed Italian hatch that revived fortunes for Fiat single-handedly in 2005,when it was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show.All of Europe cannot be wrong.Add to it,it won the ECOTY that year.Iam sure there is something very suspicious about this review and the way the Punto has been projected here. | Reply

    The bad press that Fiat is getting in India is continuing with your article. Do you think that Suzuki and Tata have just recently bought the licence for the 1.3L engine from Fiat and improved upon it within the time span of 1 year! Incredible.Looking at the comparison with other hatches, Grande Punte has the largest wheel base and the lar gest tyre size. Does it have any significance to you or any advantage to the buyers?     As for petrol there is no claim to 20 kmpl! The standard figures released by fiat at showrooms is 13.8 kmpl (under standard test conditions). So it will give around 10 if you are a good driver that is! | Reply

    Cool guys.It was heart break reading abt the mileage this article bcos i was serious buying the punto blindly Fiat claims the mileage as 22.3kpl for 90bhp and 21.2kpl for 75bhp engine. its clear punto rocks go for it. fiat cars are reliable for life | Reply

    A question to Mr. Mirkar. I am astonoished at the 12 KMPL mileage for the GP. Even adjusting for it's kerb weight it seems to be pretty low. Could this be because you were driving a new car without much KM on the odo? Or is it your final conclusion on the mileage. Please Clarify. I am very impressed with this car and the only worry is this 12 KMPL result you have got. Your answer will decide if I am going for it. | Reply

    The diesel Engine is the same Engine which is used in Tata Indica Vista Quadrajet and Maruti Swift. As Vista is more cheaper than both Swift and Punto. I am recommending Vista. | Reply

    I got a Maruti D'zire with 1.3 muktijet. It gives me 17/18 in city with a/c and 23 on long run. It has given me 27 Km/lt on NH4 drive. 12 kms means there must be some problems with vehicle or testing. | Reply

    here comes another one from fiat thou prices r very attractive i think what lacks in punto is da engine fire power i think in both 1200cc and astonishgly 1400c r both underpowered for my liking like maruti getting easily 86bhp out of 1200cc ritz ,hyundai with its kappa which has solid 82 bhp turner n recently launched honda city delievers 90bhp out of its 1200 cc punto gets only 68bhp out of its 1200cc i thght 1400cc shud atleast churnout 100 bhp 90 bhp out of dat engine isnt giving me da confidence to say fiat has yet got its engines sorted out completly many buyers i heard complain same abt linea both its disel n petrol variants r quite sluggish as compared to what competition has to offer, n if zigwheels mileage sure r for real incase of punto dat 1400cc punto wont b a big hit as most of us r mileage conscious ppl | Reply

    While the mileage estimated by zigwheels might appear too low, however, the company has not yet announced official mileage numbers. Unlike other cars which market their mileage as a ve point, Fiat hasn't talked about it. Hope Fiat announces official mileage sooner rather than later. | Reply

    Hi All, We just did Mumbai Shirdi in a new Indica Vista with the Fiat Multijet Engine the mileage calculation came to 17 Km per liter. I was anticipating 20 . Maybe cause the engine is new and need to open up to give better milage. | Reply

    My friend has a multijet palio, and he gets a mileage 17kmpl in city conditions. I have read reports in teambhp.com from owners of linea that multijet gives them about 15 kmpl in city conditions. One thing about Fiat cars is the mileage gets better with time. You also start to love Fiat with time, the handling and drive. I own a Fiat 1.6 sport, and it gives 10.5 kmpl in city conditions with AC on. most of time, which is good for a 100 ps engine. Punto looks good 12 kmpl for multijet is a blatant lie. | Reply

    I don't understand. Everyone is saying that zigwheels is biased against fiat, but they've given good reviews to the linea and the 500 earlier. eveb after reading the punto reviw it sounds like who write this really like the car. if they say small points that they do not like it does not mean they are biased. mileage figures are bad but that coule be an issue with the car that was tested. i'm sure the 1.3 diesel will give more mileage. "So if you've fallen in love with this car at first site, we reckon you can't go wrong. One piece of advice though - she looks really hot in red!" well i think i am buy one red punto for me! | Reply

    Guys, I agree with most of the comments here. A mileage of 12kmpl from 1.3 multijet, unbelievable. 9kmpl from petrol still sounds Ok since a lot of Palios do deliver that kind of mileage but 1.3 multijet easily delivers 16 . I sometimes wonder if journalism in this country is left unbiased anymore :( Guys@zigwheels, please give FIAT a break. Atleast those poor guys are not fleecing us like HONDAs and SKODAs. | Reply

    review is ok.but .i have driven both palio multijet and swift ddis (both have same engine) apart from intial response swift is giving i feel both car having same driving experience overall..infact the rear seat journey in swift is horrible .but punto is spacious than swift too.and cheaper than fabia and jazz.its a good value for money car.it will rock | Reply

    i dont agree that Fiat is not making the good use its Engine. i would rather say this engine was developed for Grande punto. this car has revived Fiat in Europe during fiats bad patch with sales and will certainly build a good share in this segment in India also. | Reply

    Seems the test results are all wrong intentionally or untentionally!Linea (P) with same engine gives 10-12 kmplLinea (D) gives 16-20kmplAlso the 0-100 figures dont seem right at all!How Punto do 0-100 in 17 sec, while Linea (with same 1.4L FIRE engine more weight) does it in 15? | Reply

    Performance Fiat is able to get out of 1.4 L engine, other peers like Maruti, Hyundai etc. are able to extract from 1.2 L engine. It is big drawback of Fiat. Second is their quality control. But I agree the price is attractive but car is sluggish in comparison to peers. Zigwheels is always biased for Maruti. | Reply

    Car is good overall. But inefficient engine and poor FE may not go well with potential buyers. It is unfortunate that Maruti and Tata is able to make better use of Fiat diesel engine and get lower NVH than inventor Fiat. | Reply

    Zigwheels is wrong with the mileage. My petrol Linea with the same engine gives 12 kmpl in the city. Zigwheels need too correct their reviews big time. I am waiting for the reviews of Autocarindia and Overdrive. | Reply

    Mileage figures in your review do not seem to be accurate. A small petrol car with 9Kmpl in a country like India ??? No matter how good the handling or looks may be, Fiat would be crazy to be trying to sell cars with such low mileage at a time when Ritz,A-Star,Swift etc all aport a 15 mileage | Reply

1.3 MJD gave me 14 kmpl inside city limits till 3000 kms , after first service, it improved to 15 kmpls inside city limits with ac on. On the highways it jumped to a whopping 21 kmpl. | Reply
