Comparo: Swift Vdi vs. Indica Vista 1.3 Quadrajet vs. Fabia TDi vs. Palio Multijet vs. Getz CRDi

9 Oct 2008

The diesel hatchback segment has heated up significantly over the last couple of months. Varad More thinks that's a reason good enough to pit the latest hot-hatches against each other and find out who takes the crown.

Diesel technology is getting widely accepted and it has been taken to a new level – benefits of which have filtered down even to the sportiest segments like that of the Hatchbacks. It is a tough segment and all car-makers are vying to lure the customer with as many options as possible. The new Fiat Palio Stile gets a heart-transplant with Fiat's highly potent Multijet engine.

Hyundai i20

The Hyundai Getz Prime CRDi has been around for quite some time but it hasn't been able to make its presence felt in this class. Why so? Maruti Suzuki smartly dished out a diesel version of its already popular Swift hatchback and boy was the media impressed by the Swift diesel! Then Skoda launched the much-anticipated Fabia 1.4 TDi with its superior build quality and exemplary handling. However, the latest and toughest competitor to step into the ring is the new TATA Indica Vista and it has stirred up things in this segment like never before.

i feel a good car becomes better with its service backup.......in d above test, none of de manufacturers can match de levels of services provided by maruti n hyundai.....wher tata-fiat are yet to find a foothold in providing a good service backup, skoda is much worse.......you do not have many service centres fr skoda n even if u find one,it'll cost u a bomb to just get a normal service done........maruti n hyundai rule in tis respect......i,personally own a getz n i must say tat its a nice car overall n am also completely satisfied by d service given to me by hyundai.......... | Reply

seriously believe me i am currently in uk and in my visit to india i drove all these cars, to be frank i donno how indica/indigo cars even make it into these comparisons..believe me built quality is pathetics..comparable to ambassidor, all others are way ahead..in tata cars to do feel instantly that you are in a cheap car..maybe good for taxis | Reply

You believe it or not, cars are not driven on paper or computer screens. So, go for a test drive. You will not be amazed to understand that Swift is the hottest car in this segment. compare the prices too. What about getz' fuel efficiency?? Do not hide anything. You just can't beat the international top seller Swift. | Reply

Dr Kallol Banerjee,So far we have seen 4-5 launches and 4-5 in pipe line but in my view non matches the Swift DDIS. This is the far best hatch with economy, power and pleasure to drive and price. Yes Maruti should include more safety feature in and then my money is on for Swift for next 4-5 years. | Reply

Tatas have service problem [worst technicians] for Indica, same may be story with fiat as those are serviced at TASC. Skoda has very few service centers.Maruti service centers are getting crowded but still their service is OK. After sales service is very important part of cars. So Maruti fares better in this deptt. | Reply

getz is old style/looks and very over priced. i20 diesel is better but expensive. Punto is best in class with tata service backing it is a goo option. | Reply

If you love driving go for the Swift D - period. If you don't mind paying a bit extra for a bit less in features, less space & smaller boot, if you can tolerate a slightly firm ride, the rattles that'll soon creep in & the bumpers that will come off with any er...bump, colour that'll lose sheen pretty quickly & a horn that'll soon be croaking, go for the Swift. Seriously. I had one that looked like a jalopy & flew like a jet. I enjoyed it. Now i've aVista. It's for sedate people- soft ride, sturdy, seats 5 in more comfort that mid size sedans, decent boot. In city they have very similar mileages due to better drivability of Vista. On a smooth, curvy, traffic & pothole free highway, Swift rules. | Reply
