Audi TT Vs BMW Z4: The Clash of the Coupes

Photography: Kunal Khadse      21 Dec 2009

Buying a Car ? Get Best Deal
Audi-TT-vs-BMW-Z4_1

First there was the Audi TT, and now with the BMW Z4's entry we have two of the hottest sports coupes from Germany ready to be lapped up by India. Sopan Sharma and Abhishek Nigam pit the cars against each other, and defend their choices!

Sports. Coupes. One of the words is about the absolute pleasure of the senses one experiences inside a car while driving it at speed, the other implies the visual pleasure of looking at the uncluttered, sensuous demeanour from the outside. Bring the two together and you have a lethal combination - a car that looks as fast as it is capable of going. No wonder then that when it comes to inciting desirous reactions from people outside and passion-filled squeals from the passengers inside, sports coupes are the order of the day.

And then we have the ones that come from Germany. Almost invariably with a pedigree in fun, drop-dead gorgeous looks, rock solid reliability and space-age technology, they usually figure in any auto nut's list of most desirable cars. But here is what we are excited about - now, with enough Indian Rupees in hand, two of these stunning machines can occupy our garages.

The Audi TT in its new form has been thrilling enthusiasts with its shape and sense since 2006, and was made available to Indian buyers last year. Not only is it one of the most elegant looking sports coupes in the international market, it also got a headstart on most other cars of the same category in India. Internationally, the TT comes with a host of engine options - ranging from the front-wheel drive 2.0-litre petrol to the one that we had - a full blown 3.2-litre V6 with four wheel drive.

But the reason this story came into existence was because of the launch of another sportster. This one comes from the three-lettered car maker from Munich, and has been sending enthusiasts in a tizzy with its aggressive lines and Casanova characteristics. The BMW Z4 has also received an upgrade and it has stepped away from its Bangle influences and moving further into macho territory. Plus, it's a Beemer, which means it probably goes like stink. The perfect set up for a face off then? Hell yes!

i really love audi tt because of its interior and exterior styling, superb engine, transmission and good fuel economy. i tried to look for reviews about its audi parts online and all their comments are positive. | Reply

down to business. if money was no concern i'd buy the Z4 for me and the TT for my wife. but the price difference of 19 L is huge. i'd settle for the TT as a weekend car and a laura for daily use and and use the rest of the cash for fuel. | Reply

Dear Friends , would anybody please tell me that among the three german giants BMW ,Merc and Audi which one is fun to drive..? Not on any particular model but generally...because I have heard that BMW has a bit congested cabin while Audi suffers from handling ( ride lets it down ). Don't know about Merc demerits but generally which one is great to drive in terms of ride quality ,comfort ,power and interiors and cabin quality and also which one is the best seller in Germany. Thanks. | Reply

BMW - Handling and ResponsivenessMercedes - Comfort and RideAudi - Blend of comfort, ride, handling and engine response. If you want a driver's car i.e. best handling car, go with the BMW. Simple. | Reply

ride and comfort goes to the merc. they are the best. Power well merc has AMG and BMW has M. so it will deprnd on the model and engine option. interiors.. well that's a tough call. I THINK the new E is a bench mark. but as a driver's car. has to be a BMW. as for best seller in germany. sorry no idea. | Reply

Typicalls Z4 is seen as a womens car in germany and u would hardly see any man driving, it has failed in germany due to the women tag it has. The leasing rate in germany itself tells u the story. While TT is good but very few people drive it in germany as its not a family car and one has to be hard core audi fan. Moreover the sports cars in germany of BMW have taken a hammering due to the turkish image associated with it. No german would drive a car that has turkish image, just like our punjabis who buy fancy cars but have no class.. same thing...i live in german anyone wants suggestions feel free to write to me at darshi352000@yahoo.co.in. peopl her prefer BMWs station wagon or noral 7 class and audis a4 and a6. a5 is very good the cabrio but its not in india so a4 or a6 is good.. | Reply

Just one point. 7 is a series, S is a class. ie 7 series or s class. not 7 class. | Reply

Dear Suresh SinghLearn how to write first, then comment on a community's class. I picked out at least 15 grammatical errors in your post. By the way Mr.Singh, where are you from originally? (Obviously, you do not hail from Germany!) Please let us know so that we may try to understand the classy background you come from. Awaiting your reply. | Reply

I don’t think anyone who is buying a BMW in US (their biggest market) or India is concerned about how BMW is perceived in Germany. Seriously…nobody cares. BMW are globally known for their performance and there is a reason why their engines and cars are on the top and awarded year after year. I see your point in Z4 seen as a women’s car but that was the case with the previous Z4(E85) not with this one. Rest, the review says all….(P.S. You don’t have to make any personal comments on a cultural ethnicity to explain Turkish image) | Reply

Dear Suresh ,I totally agree with you . They are going to developing country with their Z4 or or coupe ,, it's all same because its really not at all popular here in germany ,,yeah somewhat in south because of mfg.base .. But with turkish image merc. has the same problems . it's nice to see swift and hyundai (Made in India) running on german Roads . puravbshah@gmail.com | Reply

Question to the Editor: The same Z4 SDrive 35i in US runs 0-60 in 5.2s and completes qtr mile in 13.4 (http://www.edmunds.com/bmw/z4/2009/testdrive.html). The difference of 1.1s here is not minor. What could be the reason for this difference as BMW is using the same 3.0L twin-turbo for all the Z4 35i globally. | Reply

Hi Ankur, I'm no expert but the quality of fuel and octane rating play a huge role, as does altitude. i guess it boils down to fuel quality. | Reply

Both cars are excellent machines and it's really upto your personal taste, Audi TT's design is more neutral , however Z4 is a bit quirky so not for everyone. | Reply
