Yamaha has taken this a step further with their 2009 MT-01 SP, which is truly a very special limited edition version of their bestseller. The MT-01 SP boasts of significant changes to both the chassis and design, however it retains its massive 1, 670cc V-twin engine.
The MT-01 SP gets new Ohlins front and rear suspension. The 43mm front forks are now tuned to provide a heightened level of feedback from the road and it also features optimal spring and dampening settings to match the unmistakable characteristics of the MT-01's engine and chassis. The rear shock absorbers now come with a separate reservoir which helps in offering a consistent damping performance, which works to improve ride comfort without taking away from the exemplary handling that the bike offers. Road hold and stability have been some of the mainstay features on this bike, and the new set up is bound to take that a notch higher.
The special edition bike is set to ride on new Pirelli Diablo Rosso tyres with a 120/70-17 up front and a fatter 190/50-17 at the rear. The tyres boast of higher grip with strong turning qualities and great wet weather performance. Again, the tyres just compliment the very reason this bike has been built for and are set to uphold the very essence of biking pleasure that the MT-01 offers.
Design changes include a fatter tapered handlebar with a machined aluminium handlebar crown. The new look, gives the bike an enhanced appeal and comes across as though it just got out of the gym after a great workout! Macho appeal to the limit!
As with most special edition products, Yamaha will offer the MT-01 SP with a special colour scheme where the focal point will be the red and white fuel tank that is complimented by a red front fender and the chrome MT logo on the tank. The two tone seat and gold wheels symbolize the exclusivity of this mean machine and from the looks of it, the job is extremely well excecuted-more than enough to convince you that robbing a bank is not such a bad idea to get your hands on one of these bikes!
Other special features include a protective nano-film coating on the bare-metal finish exhaust, and the use of additional chrome plating on selected engine and chassis components. The MT-01 SP will be available in the UK markets by July this year and the plan is to sell it in limited numbers.
Considering the fact that Yamaha India brought the stock version to the country about a year ago, you tend to wonder if they will bring in a few of these elite looking pieces to be sold to a lucky few here as well!
