World Solar car race begins in Australia

Shrabani Das 28 Oct 2009

Buying a Car ? Get Best Deal

32 cars, 17 countries and a distance of 3000 kilometers--- all competing to get a podium finish in a car race. Whats new? You might argue... well, pretty much if one only considers that these fleets of vehicles resemble huge insects, solar planets, and spaceship and is powered by solar power.

Known as the Global Green Challenge, these solar-powered and fuel-efficient cars will travel through Australia's tropical rainforests, desert and coastal plains, all in the name of environment.

Each team comprises of four drivers who take turns to drive the cars. Starting at 8am daily, the drivers would stop and put up camp at 5pm daily before continuing the race the next day.

As always, this time too the spectators will see some unique cars in the race. For example, Australia's University of New South Wales' solar car, Sunswift IV, is a three-wheeled, carbon fibre machine which can reach a top speed of 115 km an hour using just 1,300 watts -- the same power it takes to toast two slices of bread.

This is the step taken towards the reformation of Auto Industry. It ain't long when there would be a perpetual vehicle in the market, cheap and affordable for the common man. | Reply

Only thing missing is the practicality. The race should be with two passengers and then we can see some real good designs. This race should be the cradle to the ultimate aim of going green completely | Reply
