Ya, I think the Chinese have bought it. But claimed they would the company as it is, with autonomous operations. However it's hard to understand the Chinese meaning of 'Autonomous' (Think of the so-called Tibet 'Autonomous Region'). Hopefully they would keep it truly autonomous and not do an MG Rover kind of blunder. | Reply

I have been living in the West for a decade and one thing that's very visible is that the oldest cars you find on the roads are mostly Volvos; they just keep going. I hope the new ones are atleast as good as the old ones. Like someone pointed, I drove Merc C200, but it gave me lots of problems. | Reply
 C Ravichandran (07 February 2010 23:27) Reply to Jatinder
New ones are not AS GOOD as the old ones with the signature 'red-block engine'. But in comparison to newer Bimmers and Mercs, much better. Handling is not as good as thoroughbred German marques, but I find the Volvos far more comfortable. | Reply
naresh (07 February 2010 06:54) Reply to Jatinder
Cuba has American cars from the 50's but that doesn't spell it's quality, it's just the way you drive it. Moreover Swedish products are always highly priced because of their social security system. | Reply
 C Ravichandran (07 February 2010 23:22) Reply to naresh
Naresh, also although the way you drive a car relates to its reliability in the long run, you just have to face it that some cars were just not put together well. Try owning a Citroen XM or a Jaguar XJ6; together with a, Mercedes W124 or a Volvo 240 / 940. You can pamper the former cars as much as you like. Their engines and gearboxes are just badly designed that they overheat, get clogged, consume oil after 100,000 kms. I know a relative who had a Citroen XM. He had hell with the auto-levelling suspension and the transmission. I would just disengage from D for no reason midway. Even the authorised service centre could not give him a solution when it kept recurring after making him replace $1000s worth of parts. On the other hand, take an old Merc or Volvo. It will last longer than you. My 2 cents. | Reply

sad we didnt have volvo 240s in india. really bombproof bricks they are. agreed some cars are really badly engineered. another example are old fiats and alfa romeos. they just rust inside out even in the driest of weathers. rust buckets.
 C Ravichandran (07 February 2010 23:11) Reply to naresh
well in Cuba they can't scrap cars because cars are not freely purchasable. you'd have to go through a ton of formalities to own one. they don't (or hardly) import any cars nor do they manufacture. as such they have to stick to what they had brought in the 50's (called Yank Tanks). and mind you most of which don't run on their original guzzler V8s anymore. they either have russian i4 cylinders inside or Japanese ones. In fact most don't even use the original gearboxes. Apart from the basic design, almost everything in those Yank Tanks are not Yankee. I'm talking out of experience of going to Havana. As for Volvos they just keep going and going on their original engines. I've also been in Florida for several months and have not seen/heard about an American car on its original engine (without an overhaul) going past 300,000 miles. Unless of course they were pampered. | Reply

Its sold for under $40000 in US. Of course Volvo is known for safety, but no where in comparison with BMW or Benz. Skoda's engines are far better and you buy it cheap, since it is manufactured in India. Buying Volvo you are just paying extra import duties that's all. Let's all the educated vote for "Capitalism". We can buy BMW/Benz for just $50000. | Reply
Bharath Baddam (11 February 2010 06:28) Reply to Bharath Baddam
Ok, I think I was a bit ambigious there. Volvo was a much better car before ford bought it. And I didn't mean to say that BMW and Benz have better safety feature, but I was comparing performance and handling. Why I said buy Skoda is because Volvo is not such a hyped luxury brand like BMW, benz, Acura or Lexus. Only thing I heard about Volvo is safety and nothing much. When I said buy Skoda I was not saying to people who are looking out ways to spend. All I meant to say is that this car is not worth the money. Volvo quality went down after it was bought by Ford. The same thing happend with Jaguar, Mazda etc..... If you want to buy nobody is stopping I just gave my opinion. | Reply

Mr. Barath, I agree with you on buying Skodas, Mercs and BMWs since a significant part of the purchase price of any of these cars (especially Skoda and Merc) remain in India since some parts are locally manufactured and most of the popular models assembled in the country; rather than buying Volvos that are assembled in Sweden where all the money leaves the country. (Volvo assembles them in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia etc, promising sales here can bring them in too!). However in terms of quality, engine refinement and reliability, comfort and brand name respect I cannot agree with you. Skoda is no where near Volvo. Volvos are a class of their own and are by far superior to Skoda anytime. I also have to say Volvos are far better in quality and reliability than current day Mercs. The older 70s to early 90s E classes were simply the best built stuff out there; but not anymore. Even Acuras and Lexus have a better build standard than modern Mercs. Even Merc fans admit this, go to any MB forum and see. BMW - excellent cars, well built, more sporty than Volvo, unsurpassed handling - but in the long run they tend not to last as long as Volvos. Interior of 3 series and 5 series are not suited for long distance journeys, back starts to ache. Volvo excels in these (comfort, reliability) but lags behind the German counterparts in handling. | Reply

kc, bmw and benz performance is more better to volvo. volvo engine not as powerful . 0-100 is not as fast as benz and bmw. but i agree comfort n reliability of volvo is more better. n merc n bmw is too common these days. skoda very good but cannot compare with volvo, benz and bmw. | Reply

No one knows SKODA outside india, belive me.101 car/truck pile up in thick fog one car i admire after seeing the accident is VOLVO S40 the car was smashed but the cabin remained secure all the occupants escaped unhurt. This accident i would never forget in my life nor this car.Its not how powerful it is its all about how safe it was ,imagine u been unhurt after a horrific accident,u just couldnt imagine it ....... true..
C Ravichandran (07 February 2010 23:38) Reply to Bharath Baddam
Skoda? You gotta be out of your mind. The new Superb is less refined than a 98' Volvo 960 or S70 let alone a newer line. No where else is Skoda considered a luxury car other than here in India. Everyone laughs at Skoda in UK. It's unheard of in the US. | Reply
Arun Vellappallil (06 February 2010 16:18) Reply to Bharath Baddam
Dont compare Skoda to Volvo,Volvo is far far ahead of times,Some instances ahead of Merc. Most of the safety features that you find in ones car was once devolped by Volvo. | Reply

Volvo rocks in terms of quality. It's only rival used to be Merc but anybody who has a current day C or E would know how bad Mercs have become. I had an 85' Volvo 240 and a 97' 850 when I was in Malaysia for over 3 decades. Both cars are still running strong (the 240 has almost 600,000km on the clock and is still as solid as a rock). They are being used by my relative there. I now drive a crappy Merc W211 which sucks big time. I tested this new S80 in Malaysia, it was brilliant. I will definately get this in 2011. Volvo makes magnificent cars. (PS: highest mileage car is a Volvo P1800, 3.5million kms!) | Reply
