VW Beetle launching on 4th Dec

25 Nov 2009

To Get Free Update Volkswagen Beetle

It's official. The much waited Volkswagen Beetle is launching in India on 4th December. Though Volkswagen is tight lipped about the price, yet buyers should expect to burn a hole in their pockets. The Beetle which is sold in five variants internationally, across Europe, the US and other countries is expected to be priced around Rs 19 to 20 lakhs even for the basic variant. It is mainly due to the fact that the Beetle would be coming to India as a Complete Build Unit and so it would levy 110 per cent custom duty on the car.

Even though Volkswagen is not looking at huge volumes from the Beetle in India, the idea, according to company officials, is to promote the company's brand name, as all of its future models, including compact cars and sedans, are heavily dependent on it. The Beetle, fondly called the people's car, is one of the most successful models of Volkswagen as it was positioned as a compact economy car.

Dear VW, We have a HUGE market, lOTS OF MONEY ROLES in the car market too. But dont think we are fools. Your Dealers may be fools But the people are very choosy of RIGHT THING AT RIGHT PRICE. BEETLE is NOT among it looking at your price Tags. I always admired GERMAN ENGINEERING all through out. BUT expactations you have shattered on your price tags for out dated models.you ARE LOOSING THE NAME PEOPLE WERE WAITING FOR. Be careful OR may loose the race amoung tough compitations | Reply

@ Akshay This is not your everyday hatch like Alto, Swift or i10. This is an image booster model just like Fiat 500. VW don't expect good sales from this model but brand recognition. I dont know why everybody is panicky about the situation, cummon guys, understand the reason first and then comment. If they were serious about the sales of this model, they wouldn't have imported the car in the first place. | Reply

Commericially, I dont think it would be a huge success for such a high price tag. One thing can be surely said is VW is not bring the most loved car of all generation perhaps to make money. Instead it will add Brand value to the german car maker. I am sure that even if with a steep price, one would see a lot of teens/ chaps in their 20s whose rich parents would buy them the car. | Reply

First he said, it's a 2.0L with 140 bhp, then he said it's a 2.0L with 115bhp and last he said it's a TFSI - the Turbo charged petrol engine ;)). The car had no leather seats, no sun/moon roof, no fog lights. I just hope the engine doesn't get replaced at the Mumbai port !!The 2009 Beetle had a 2.5L engine with 150 bhp, which was released world wide.God knows how these guys are going to sell it !! | Reply

Hi Niraj, I have lived in US and Europe. There is no big class in VW. As as indian , since its not in indian street, you take it for granded that VW Beetle is classy. See, VW itself call its a "people's" car and not classy. So, please get your knowldege updated. And as someone suggested, its considered a gals car. A gals car with non-sense facility for 30L INR ( ~ 55K USD) ? You can do rest of the maths. There is no class in spending money over peanuts. But real yummy things instead | Reply

People, this is a halo car. The intention is not to sell a million Beetles or compete with the Hindu Accord or City. The tag of "people's car" seems like a statement made by an oxymoron. First of all VW needs to revisit their marketing drawing boards before making such ambitious statements. How on earth should one justify the price tag of 20 lakhs for a car which can hardly accommodate four people? India is a price sensitive market where people look for value for money. This car is meant for people with deep pockets who are looking to add yet another fancy car to their already existing cavalcade teeming with the likes of Mecedes, BMW, Audi. You can get 2 great sedans like Honda City or Toyota Corolla for that price!! Let marketing sense prevail! | Reply

It is sure a costly car if we see its "Compact People's Economy Car" tag. I sure is a sexy ride. I a country where most of us look for value for money this car will still be costly even if the 110 percent tax comes to zero. This car will be priced at 8-10 Lacs at least. There are lot of spacious cars available at that price. Now looking at the car from a collector's perspective this price is a steal considering the reputation this car has in the market. So decide what you are and then go for it. If you ask me..... I just love this car but wouldn't buy it with this Tag. | Reply

Sreenath...according to your theory, Best Joke of the Year wasn't Jazz, it was Fiat 500 at 17 Lakhs. It depends what you can afford and what Value For Money means to you. Its a matter of choice. When someone already has a 30 lakh car, an MPV and any other car, and now wants another fun car, what will he do? He'll have every reason in the world to buy a car like Beetle. By introducing Beetle, Volkswagen does not aim general car buyers. Some cars are image builders, Beetle, with its golden history, is one of them. Its just what 500 is for Fiat and Mini for BMW. It may not help Volkswagen much in its sales in India but will definitely increase brand image in the eyes of general public when they see VW badge on such a cute car. | Reply

True. A people's car for Rs 20 lakh!!! What is the point of bringing it when nobody in their right mind will purchase it.
