Test Drive Volkswagen Beetle

Volkswagen has launched the timeless Beetle supermini and the Touareg SUV as its halo brands. Prepare for more from the company soon!

Volkswagen has launched its super-successful New Beetle in the Indian market today. The car has been introduced with a price tag of Rs 20.45 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. The car will be available as a CBU through Volkswagen dealerships.

The New Beetle has been launched with 115 bhp, 2.0-litre petrol engine. Adding to the comfort and ease of use will be the 6-speed automatic gearbox. The charm and appeal of the New Beetle nevertheless remains with its classic styling, inspired by the original people?s car that went on to become the best selling car of a single design in the world in its decades long run.

The New Beetle was introduced internationally in 1998 and has been a success ever since. In fact it was the car that can be credited with kicking off the retro-chic segment, in which modern and comfortable interpretations of long standing classic cars are making a rapid resurgence as fashion statements. Amongst these are the MINIs, and the Fiat 500 which is already on sale in India.

Volkswagen also had a surprise launch at the evening, the massive Touareg SUV. Launched at a price of Rs 51.84 lakh ex-showroom Delhi, the SUV will come with a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 diesel engine. The car shares many of its aggregates with the Porsche Cayenne, and is expected to go up against the likes of the BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz M-Class.

Hi I just want to correct you with the stats on the Touareg. VW does not have a 3.0L Turbo charged V6. It does have a 3.2L FSI V6. this however was revamped in late 2008 to a 3.6L FSI. Please get the facts right. Moreover, it is the Q7 and the cayenne which adopt the platform from the Touareg which was launched in 2004 as compared to 2006 for the other two. | Reply

Great now that it's here all I need to do is work hard to be able to afford it in 2026, that's when my girl will be 18 and will get this for her birthday. As for the price.... no price is too big for a work of art. To posses a legend is not something you get to do everyday. And then again it's my kids birthday gift wont want to give her an Accord,,as some people compared the car to, which no one turns to even look at once leave alone twice. For her it has to be the cutest things ever made and the bug certainly fits in. | Reply

The Beetle car is an iconic item. There will surely be some Indians who prefer and finally buy the Beetle even though there are many better looking/running and more economic/ greater-value-for-money cars than the Beetle. VW is not so crazy as to think that they can make big money in India through the Beetle. Their strategy is to showcase their range of products and expect the shine to rub off on their other products like Jetta/ Passat and the soon-to-be-launched GOLF which are not fantastic/ economic / great-value-for-money cars. So why should we make such a big deal of VW's strategy? | Reply
  • SS (08 December 2009 15:30)
all i have to say is that a company has some products meant to capture the market and some for the niche segment. Beetle is meant for the niche segment obviously. It is not even competing against the Accord as it is one of its own kind. Also this is just a marketing strategy and building of the brand image in India. Whether it is Fiat 500 with a 16L price tag or Beetle with a 20L price, does it matter? Someone who could buy a Fiat 500, can also buy a Beetle easily... so crux is that these are just brand building exercises.. | Reply

Even though it's considered a ladie's car, I don't think people think only queer male drives it. If you have such an impression, I would request you to widen your thinking. In my office there are two guys coming in the bug. And they don't look or act like fags either. Best Buy's geeksquad uses the Beetle as their brand wagon. | Reply
RM (09 December 2009 02:05) Reply to Jijo
The point is that a Beetle in US cannot add to your male personna. In addition my friend who has the bug developed serious gear box issues and spent $3500 getting that corrected! So yes I would prefer an Accura over this sub-standard yet immensely popular toy!
BB (11 December 2009 13:41) Reply to Jijo
I saw the ad on tv where a guy was pretty much amazed by the car. Like RM said - A Beetle in US cannot add to your male personna.
  • Jijo (08 December 2009 04:34)
I've used a beetle for 2 years and my cousin had a one too. They are good but definitely not worth 20L. I think VW is depending on the hype to sell the brand not the car. They claim to compete with Merc and BMW. It's hilarious. If the Indians are going to buy it (their claim) we are all a bunch of jokers. I own a Jetta. It's a cool car but if VW has to sell Jetta in India and be profitable, the pricing should be around 11 to 13 L not 16. Indians may fall for the hype but they never get stuck to it.My advice to VW: If you want to be successful in India, sell quality, not class. You may be German but you are not Benz or BMW and you should know it better than any one else. | Reply
RM (09 December 2009 02:10) Reply to Jijo
WV and quality? They come no where close to even Hundai. Sadly in terms of reliability BMW and Merc are beaten squarely by Acura and Lexus. But yes people with the extra buck in their pocket still have the perception that some of the German brands are good. | Reply

VW didnt launch the Beetle to compete with M-800 ot Tata Nano. They are actually looking to create a buzz in the Indian market. I may be wrong, but I I have observed a lot more Jetta's on Babgalore roads after the Beetle news spread. This is a marketing strategy guys...so dont take it to heart. VW doesn't want us to buy this. If they do, they will invest and manufacture the car in India. Fiat did the same with 500...and it surely worked very well to improve their brand image. | Reply

I'm sure those who can afford will be happy to enjoy the comforts of Volkswagon. The price tag of 20.45 Lakhs for a 2.0 Litre VW Beetle seems to be too high compared to the international market. It should not have exceeded to 15 Lakhs maximum. Don't understand why is it made expensive for Indians! | Reply
RM (09 December 2009 02:20) Reply to Robert Fernandes
Cars are not just more expensive in India. If you compare under the hood all the engines/gear-box are all stripped down. Under the pretext of higher mileage, even the engine capacity is stripped down. Our cars have slimmer electronics (not many Indian models have GPS for example) So in effect compared to the international market we are paying 3 times! | Reply

All those who r making silly arguments here should read the whole thing abt beetel first, i do not own any car but i m definately aware abt why the price is 20lacs its only because tht these cars r not manufactured in india u can see the word used completely built unit (CBU) this differs from completely knocked down (CKD) both of them attracts different rates of import duty making the price of the vehicle going up so u guys shuld know abt all these things before making any unwanted comments beetle is an iconic vehicle and is one in its own class i just had to say this. | Reply
Avy (07 December 2009 13:42) Reply to Nick
my dear nick why the indian cus bear the all these kind of custom duty and all...and as u said its an iconic car bt if u havig a good knowledge about teh auto industry so u could find enough more then enough iconic car in the range of 20L, but if u still recomend the beetel..it means u r going wrng.....so my dear think twice or more.... | Reply
JD (07 December 2009 11:56) Reply to Nick
How does it matter? bottom line is what you are getting for 20L. you can get a fully loaded Accord Sedan for 18L. Why should you buy bittle for 20L? VW will be able to sell few units but it will not be able to capture the market with that price. | Reply
Shaik (07 December 2009 13:03) Reply to JD
Thats right. I dont care that its not manufactured in India and thus the price is high due to import duties. But is the Beetle worthy (or iconic) enough to deserve such a price tag? HELL NO!!! | Reply
Imtiaz (13 December 2009 15:21) Reply to Shaik
at this rate why spend 18L for an accord dear enlightened sirs? Why not spend say 10L for a truck and go around in it? It's certainly roomier, and just imagine the fate of the poor accord if it were to meet your truck in a head on collission!!! ouch!. that hurt didnt it..... Guys art has a different segment. You do not argue about the price of art. It is for the connoisseur to appreciate and pay for. The beetle is a classic do not confuse it with your ordinary run of the mill cars. Coz by your argument people who maintain vintage cars are idiots. By mine if it were not for them those beauties would be lost for ever. So stay in your space buy your cars do not comment on the cars that you cannot afford and do not appreciate.

Next you'd be telling me not to buy Jockey coz you don't like the brand and coz it's very costly in your eyes...... seriously! People who buy it can afford it and more importantly want it. You stick to your roadside vendor peddled goods and I'll buy the brands I like and am comfortable in, irrespective of price. At this rate you'd soon be telling everyone to buy a Nano coz roads in the country do not support anything better. Duh! The sad part is there are more of morons like you in our country than people who can think out of the box. BTW worst is worst not worssssst and more important there is no "worsssst decision" you pobably meant to say "bad choice" or "bad decision"..... see you have a long way to go so stop wasting time online and start reading some newspapers they'll help you improve your language skills atleast. | Reply

Government of India is in the right direction of imposing heavy import duties on finished goods and spares. This way, we would encourage home grown products to be exported and also discourage unnecessary imports. Beetle is definitely not worth 20L. It would be utter foolishness to buy this vehicle at 3 times the actual cost. There are other more stylish cars, that too sedans from Honda and Toyota available at far cheaper prices. | Reply

For NRIs returning to India, it might be cheaper to buy it in US/UK, use it there for 1-2 yrs. and then ship it to India as part of re-location. Alternatively, indian residents may be able to buy it thro their NRI friends for a much better price. Tuareg is a good vehicle, but Beetle styling is classic. | Reply

Well VW guys out there, OVERPRICING of a product doesnt build a brand. Things would have been different if this DINKY CAR was made in GERMANY rather than in MEXICO, since the excise duty would have been the same. I would never pay this much for a MEXICAN car. Moreover finding 500 FOOLS a year for VW would not be a big TASK as there are rumours that 120 have already booked. And Touareg interestingly seems low priced when compared it with BEETLE. I think this way TOUAREG should be no less than a X5 or ROVER. It deserves to be more than 1 CRORE, really which will certainly BUILD VW BRAND but KILL the PRODUCTS.......... | Reply

I think this a brand developing exercise for VW. But in realty if this is the way VW want keep the pricing in the Indian market, it will have justify the pricing of the other products any day if launched. It's going to be tough to digest in the long run. For instance for product positioning, If beetle is launche at 20.5 lakhs where would be the VW tiguan positioned? Higher....? noway..... Then VW can't be a car maker for the people, it will be for choosen people. Automatically the brand may move away from the mass by designating a premium product. VW says it makes cars for common people, but may not be applicable to Indian turf...??? | Reply
