Toyota Gets Ready to Shift to A Higher Gear

By Adil Jal Darukhanawala 21 Oct 2009

Buying a Car ? Get Best Deal

Its official! Toyota will be unveiling its Prius hybrid for sale in India at the 2010 Auto Expo in Delhi next January. Speaking to ZigWheels.com on the sidelines of the 41st Tokyo Motor Show, Kazuo Okamoto, vice chairman of the Toyota Motor Corporation, informed that the Prius will mark a gradual ramp up for Toyota in India. The Prius is the world's best known and also best selling hybrid passenger car and the version Toyota intends to sell in the country would be the latest generation model which was launched as recently as May 2009 in Japan and has also been a raging hit in this eco-conscious motoring mad nation.

"Contrary to what many think, Toyota has been gradually consolidating its operations in India and this might have meant fewer model introductions to date," said Okamoto. "However, from now on we will not be found wanting for new models and the pace of our step-by-step approach will be far quicker," he added.

The Prius hybrid is but one of a handful of stars destined to shine on the Indian autoscape which will grace Toyota's Auto Expo stand. The Japanese numero uno hopes to also unveil a concept version of its Global Small Car (code-named EFC800L) which will be made at Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltds new plant at Bidadi near Bangalore from December 2010. This car will compete in the same segment which is seeing intense action with the likes of the Suzuki Swift and Ritz ranged against the Fiat Grande Puntos and the Tata Indica Vista, the Hyundai i20s and the Honda Jazz plus the range of high profile newcomers expected in the form of the Nissan Micra / March, the Volkswagen Polo and the Ford Figo.

So bullish is Toyota about its India plans that Okamoto had no qualms in admitting his company had taken a bit more time than the others."To the outside world it may look like we have been running behind time but this is the same strategy we have used all over the world and it has paid off and we will definitely catch-up with everyone."

I own Mercedes and I am driving a Prius as a rental as my car was in an accident.Although I cannot even compare these two in luxury but I just made a 1200 mile trip in 60 $ and thats amazing as I would have to fill up car 4 times making this trip to be about 160 $.This is a highly efficient car in terms of gas savings. Has plenty of room too.I would definitly buy this if I am based out in India. | Reply

We cannot accept high rate of Car just based on fuel efficiency.Just imaging if you own a car,How long would you wish to drive. You will be sick once you complete 1,00,000 KM of mileage. Then you would think of replacing your car with new one because suspension and body works.Even though the engine is good enough to drive more. For this 1,00,000 KM mileage you will spend 3.6 Lac if you have diesel car and 4.6 Lac if you have Petrol car assuming avg of 10KM/Litre.Also you would drive this 1,00,000 KM in span of 3-4 years of time.Spending avg of 1 Lacs/year.Very less than price difference of Honda Prius and VolksWagen Passat which gives sexy look and great Engineering. Also Merc C Class which comes in much less price. | Reply

Here many discuss about the price in India with other countries… Yes we can agree… in India the tax is heavy either be import duty or for domestic product… We have to consider many things… from tax revenue drop, import bill on oil, road infrastructure, pollution etc.. If the government reduces the duties and everything gets cheap, then we have to pay more for oil imports, roads… etc. etc… leading to chaotic things from tax to traffic… so it’s a smarter way of controlling all as a whole by just implementing more tax and earn more out of less… As mentioned here as most of the cars are more than double in price as in other country market just imagine if we get a C-class for 14 lacs instead of 33 lacs present price…(as mentioned by one of my friend here) | Reply

Guys, Are you living in the 19th Century, Not every part of toyota models is made in India, Most of them are CKD and rebuilt here,Toyota pays high duty to the Goverment, that is why they have been asking SOPS so that this could be made a copetitive similar to the Global Market, The Corolla/Camry/in India except the sheet Metal body work, Lamps, Tyres, and few few body parts are made in India PRado and Land Cruiser is completed buiilt in Japan and Imported down on full stock vehicle. The Assy line is now trying to expand to higher level, but unless Goverment of India does not reduce the sops duty, you will be paying a premium for those price, Some of the technology used on this cars, Industries are yet to make or mfr this product, Becoz any product on toyota if Failure is really a big shame, so that iswhy no ancillary units in India are willing to take the investment risks | Reply

Absolutely right. Tata cars are as good as junk. What patriotism ? of a country that has long gone to dogs. I have been driving a Toyota for almost 29 years and never has any one of them given a problem. Forget the Tata's and buy foreign anytime at any price, I say. | Reply
Vijay (25 October 2009 19:15) Reply to Mohan Menon
You still say it after manza has been launched. It has clearly been the best value for money car. Toyota was reliable car a decade ago but now other manufacturers have caught up with the best practices. Toyota times are gone and it is losing hold even in the US now. Toyota cars in India are hugely overpriced at almost double what their US price is. Even with taxes, that's not justifiable. Why should someone buy Corolla as a semi-luxury car in India when it's an basic entry level car elsewhere in the world. | Reply
Tushar (28 October 2009 15:46) Reply to Vijay
What vijay says is true.the corolla is common as muck eveywhere else but since the price is so much more here it becomes a status symbol here.Imagine how much we are being discriminated against.abroad we could buy an accord for the price of a lancer.how is this fair?why is it that we have to shell out so much more than other countries do,work harder than other countries need to and yet have to drive so many medeocre a** cars??
Vishal Nambiar (16 November 2009 20:01) Reply to Vijay
Excuse me Sir. I am from Kuwait. Despite the high price, corolla still rocks in the market. It is just because of quality. Ask any Corolla owner, they will tell you how satisfied is he with his Corolla. Toyota doesn't beg you to buy their car. In Kuwait, Hyundai Sonata and Accent are damn cheap. Still, people do not buy them. Toyota is the topper. GM has gone to dogs now. Toyota was, is and will be a reliable car. If it is common like muck, then you must also have the brains to realize that people are not foolish like you. They spend their money thoughtfully. They cannot risk their hard earned money by buying uncommon cars. Reliability matters. Toyota is a trustworthy brand all over the world. If you dont have money to buy Toyota, pls. buy a Nano and be happy.
Tushar (24 May 2010 03:08) Reply to Vijay
mr.vishal use whats left of ur brains.when i say common as muck im not making any speculation on toyotas quality their sales margin speaks for itself..even i live in oman..the corolla costs 13 lac rupees in india..what im saying is by spendig 13lacs here i can buy a car worth 26lacs in a gulf nation..try to understand what im sayn b4 behaving like a child and calling names..Do u think its justified that i have to shell out 13lacs for a corolla when for the same amount of money i could buy a camry in oman or the usa?id like to see how much the corolla would"rock the market"if its price were doubled in kuwait..

The indian govt. should provide subsidies for the sale of hybrid cars or atleast give big incentives to car manufacturers to set up hybrid car plants in India. Oil imports are a major expense for our govt. Large volume sales of hybrid cars would reduce oil consumption and this would in turn reduce our imports expenditure. | Reply

You need to update your level of thinking, If you want bullock carts go for it, but plz dont suggest anybody else.India is an Emerging market and it have place for each and every segment of cars, once the cars like Prius will be launched then other manufacturer have to come up with something better or similer so the price will go down and all the optional fitting and technology will be in standard base cars. It might take some time but will happen. And prius is not just for super rich, super rich segment starts from 50 lac onwards like BMW 5, Mer E class, Audi A 6, those are startings, Prius will be manufactured in India to cut down cost and only engine will be imported so its price will be nearly 10 -12 lacs, If you are getting any car of this technology I think its worth for the money. I dont understand, why people start a hate and like campaign for anything, please note every company tries to attract customers by releasing new products and thus increasing profits; so how does it matter if its a copy or not, every model has it buyers depending on it proce range and looks; | Reply

However capable the PRIUS is, it's pricing will be crucial for it to succeed in INDIA. People here are more concerned about price | Reply

I live in Bangalore and I see a lot of Reva's around; Now if we look at the pricing of Reva and even a Maruti 800 which is much bigger than a Reva the comparison is just absurd. A Lot of folks are looking at milage given by the car and also trying to do a bit to the environment. My hope and Guess; Prius will be a hit, only if TOYOTA does not compromise on its "substance" of what is delivered in India. Certain Indian models do not have the same qualities of their "developed country" counter part and it is a shame | Reply

I agree with Shiva.. I had my Camry in US and when i came here the same car costs 23 lakhs -- absurd. U dont feel like paying so much. These days people are traveling all over the globe and they compare price when they buy the same product world wide ,bottom line is that. In many people case even if they can afford to buy Camry they wont because they compare the price what they paid earlier and what they are going to pay for the same.. Wish car price across the globe is the same :) | Reply

Hello Adil, I have a top gossip news to share with all readers. Hyundai i20 is making a secret recall of all its vehicles under a disguise of one on one calls from Dealers telling us that they will do some check on muffler wiring and that we must take our vehicles to service shops before 27th Oct. Can you find out the truth and let all the readers know why the Indian Auto Mfrs are so secretive about RECALLS in this part of the world ? | Reply

Prius is not only a hybrid car with low fuel consumption but is a flagship car from Toyota stable boasting many firsts technological innovations. The car handles superbly and is aptly suited fo indian conditions.Yes for such cars to become popular a helping hand in reduced duties would make an icing on cake otherwise it would remain in the reach of only chosen few. Remember how fast the hybrid civic was sold out when Honda reduced the duty burden? | Reply

Toyota Prius is definitely not a copy of Honda city. Prius is a hybrid car and gives around 28 KMPL mileage. But it cannot give this mileage in Indian cities where you cannot drive a long stretch above 50 Kmph. Switch over from oil to electric takes place only above 50 kmph and that's when you save fuel. | Reply
ATUL AHUJA (21 October 2009 19:32) Reply to D Ghosh
You are wrong Mr Ghosh.Switch over from oil to electric takes place at lower speeds. So this car is very good for Indian cities as you hardly go over 45/50 kmph. | Reply
Abhinav (22 October 2009 01:11) Reply to ATUL AHUJA
I think the switch over takes place at high speed.........so till 50 it runs on fuel then it switches to battery | Reply

I have driven this Toyata Prius in Australia .........it's really feels great to drive. It gives 800 km on a fully filled tank. Has a nice inbuilt GPS, and doesn't vibrate when it is on Electic mode, you will not feel that the ignition is On !!! However, the price in Australia is $55,000 which comes out to be roughly 20 lakh INR. | Reply

basic prius cost as low as US $ 30,000 in Japan. But Toyota will be selling it at a min 50,000 $ in India, because of duty paid on all imported parts. | Reply
 Thiru (21 October 2009 20:26) Reply to D Ghosh
You are wrong again. It sells for $22,000 in Japan and USA. I do not know the duties in India, I am assumning it will be about 20,000,000 in India. The challenge is how many people will be willing to spend that kind of money on a small car. On performance and inside space it is very highly competitve. | Reply
 Sunil (21 October 2009 17:39) Reply to D Ghosh
Indian government should abolish these high taxes, atleast on hybrid vehicles. these vehicles will do so much good to our environment if the manufacturers are allowed to sell them at regular prices. Besides, which Indian manufacturer makes similar speced hybrid vehicles? so why the high taxes? why not increase the taxes on the gas guzzling SUVs which are imported as CBUs instead? | Reply
harami (23 October 2009 04:43) Reply to Sunil
i dont think hybrid will do anything good to enviroment think of diaposing all that batteries after years

maybe its a derivative of the Yaris. in US, there is the hatchback version and sedan version of Yaris. and Toyota will just tweak it a little and introduce it as a 'new' model in India | Reply
Sunil (21 October 2009 17:45) Reply to Sunil
and i am referiing to the EFC800L, not the car shown in the picture above. That car is the new Prius | Reply

motoman (21 October 2009 17:31) Reply to Ashok
It is not a copy of the new Honda City because the Toyota Prius has been sold in other countries for atleast 5 years now. | Reply
car (21 October 2009 17:16) Reply to Ashok
this model has been around for quite some time outside India. It is incorrect to say that the model is replica of New Honda City | Reply
