The Grande Punto is here!

Super-competitive pricing with space and features promises to make it encroach upon the Swift territory!

Honda Jazz

Fiat India Automobiles has launched its premium hatchback, the Grande Punto in India. The all-new international bestseller comes to India in three engine options - the 1.4-litre FIRE Petrol and the 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel were expected options, but Fiat has also thrown in the surprise 1.2-litre petrol option to reap in the excise benefits. The car will be available in four varying trims - the Active, Dynamic, Emotion and fully-loaded Emotion PK.

The Grande Punto is finally rolling and it should be Fiat India's mainstay for the next threeto four years. While the Palio was conceived in the same mould as a car for emerging markets, the Grande Punto is a departure from this line of thinking because no longer do growing aware markets like India want watered down versions. Thus, the Grande Punto, which clearly exhibits the correct line of thought and action from Fiat India. Its three engine options are another detail which would further help its cause but the thing which everyone at Fiat India would have to be cautious about is cutting too close to the bone in terms of offering the right engine performance compared to the competition.

Guys, I am back home after a Mumbai Daman Mumbai trip and trust me i was stunnedwith the FE given by my Beauty with 5people on board... I did a decent 90-100 most of the times during my drive which fetched me agreat FE of 26km/l.... i drove the car for 337kms and the FE reading are asper the FE readings on the Car.Manual reading yet to be analyzed as i didn't top up fuel for this trip... Guys the verdict from my end as usual... PUNTO ROCKS... Great road presence, great power, great avg and the best is it turns headsaround... | Reply

Great to see a lot of FIAT fans. It is time that we get away from the Maruti mindset. The Japanese make good cars, but no way near the Europeans. Performance, Styling, Reliability...Fiat will be these cars easily. I own a Palio 1.2 for more than 8 years (Mar 1, 2002) done 100K kilometers and still my primary car..clock a lot of highway miles as well. Bought this knowing that the weight, engine displacement means lower mileage so no complaints....Fiats hatches are mind blowing; never experienced bad service (From Sundaram Chennai and also Tata)..FIAT FOR LIFE... | Reply

I own a punto and I was driving at 100 kmph when one Hyundai I20 crdi guy instigated for a race. I ramped upto 130 kmph and shortly we both arrived at a curve. The i20 guy had to brake to negotiate that turn, The punto handled it beautifully, It was as though I was travelling in a straight line. THe beauty of Fiat, the makers of Ferrari. I love each and every moment with the Punto. God's car. | Reply

I was studying in UK, and i know how those car geeks over there love their PUNTO. It is one of the best hatchback car ever made, even Richard Hammond of BBC's "TOP gear" (the mother of all car reviews) admit it. When i came back, the first thing i bought is a GP (Grande Punto) | Reply

It so happened that we were driving back to Bangalore and were on theMadurai city bypass. This 4-lane divided road was newly laid and we couldsave a cool 1~2 hours bypassing Madurai city. I was enjoying the drive andthe road was absolutely without traffic. So i was driving at steady 120km/hon my e-pak Punto. I was following a swift who was also doing this speedconsistently. At one point I noticed that he was slowing down. * *I thoughthe was going to make a U-turn in the median ahead and moved to the left laneto go past him. Once I moved to the other lane, I realized that there is noroad ahead of me and just a huge mound of ash color sand. Tbe road wasincomplete and we are supposed to take the other lane. There was absolutelyno warnings / road signs before this. I was doing 120 and we are just 20~25feet before the mountain of sand. My wife who was sitting next to me in thefront seat saw this first and started screaming. The moment I saw this, Ijust braked hard as a reflex action. The GT3s did make a screeching noiseand for a moment in my mind was thinking that I am going to crash into thesand. But the Punto was rock solid and it came to a complete halt wellbefore the sand without skidding or losing composure. Not even for a momentI felt losing control of the car. I didnot even had toreverse after stopping to take the other lane. I just causally turned thesteering wheel to the right and proceeded as normal. I can still rememberthe face of the swift driver watching this with a horror expression. Withmy earlier Santro Xing, I would have never survived this. BE it a ford or suzuki or Hyundai, it would have never survived this. | Reply

I own a punto for the past 9 months and the service has been fantastic so far. There was a free service camp which was organised by fiat two months ago, my car was offered a fantastic service at concorde motors in chennai. the service has been nothing short of excellent. And Punto service intervals are once every 15000 kms. There is no other car in the market which offers this kind. So go and shell out ur nonsense elsewhere, you moron | Reply

Petrol 11- 13 kmpl within city. Diesel 16 to 19 kmpl within city with AC. Highways it goes upto 22 kmpl. If i were u, i would buy a diesel. Awesome car. Once you drive it, you wont drive any other shit, be it from Honda, toyota , hyundai, ( am not bringin swift. I cant even call it a car ). Europeans are kings in car handling and safety. I bought Punto active diesel two weeks back. I am gald I didnt go for RITZ or Swift. I20 is a good choice but I am getting diesel punto active at similiar price of i20 petrol. Though swift is faster in first and second gear it's a feature which is risky in city driving. In Punto I can just easily leave the clutch after changing to first gear and not worry about hitting the vehicle in front or the engine stopping. The plastic quality in Punto is not good. Also on the delivered car there was a minor scratch(prompty painted by dealer). Mileage is good at 15.5 km/l in bangalore with AC. Suspension is really smooth( you can really feel it's an european car that way). | Reply

I just bought the Punto Active. This experience of owning this car is entirely different from my earlier cars. She is a beauty. Has excellent lines. Handling and ride quality are in fact way above the industry standards. Punto handles so well at 150 kmph that you feel glued down to the tracks. Very predictable. Done 2000kms in just 10 days. However, I see a great deal of adverse publicity in the media. The car expert `Hormazd` recommended someone on TV to go in for Swift instead of Punto. Man, this is not fair. I`ve driven the swift as well and Swift is no comparison to this Italian sweetheart. In-sales service of TATA is superb. Hats off to FIAT. | Reply

The overall performance of Punto is not transparent in the market regarding the service, spares and fuel efficiency etc. The Fiat India should take appropriate steps and should make an effective network to the entire satisfication of the Indian Customers so as to compete the market and to become a challenge to the old fashioned cars like swift,i20 etc. | Reply

That is because swift has made the body weight much lesser , 200 kilos lesser than punto. In other words they have compromised on safety and the europeans dont. A definite winner for FIAT. Took the test drive and drove really rough. Initial pickup is a problem but if you are not a rally driver, this is the car. Tried it on the hills and found it a pleasure becoz of high Tour q. Another pros for the GP is its stability in curves. Beautiful interiors (ofcourse Fiat could have given a beige color rather than the boring GREY on the Emotion).Excellent Music System so is the Auto AC. Mind you it was chilling inside while outside Temp' was hovering over 40c. Overall a wonderful experience. After the TD, my swift VDI seems so old fashion. | Reply

The base model of Jazz is 6.98 lacs in delhi .The top end is 7.63.All this on a petrol car. The japs think they can get away with any premium on their car.About time they got a boot.I think the GPunto is a grt car and a good value for money. The quality is grt,the looks are grt,Maintenance is low-service intervals are 15000 initially and 30000 kms subsequently. No doubt the Eyties have done a good job on this one..after all they r from the land if michaelangelo and renaissance.Unfortunately we have some brilliant auto journalists in our country who say that the car does not have headspace at the rear or build quality is not upto the mark at the same time they go ga ga on lousy maruti product. This is a brilliant car at a very very modest price.Just go for it.Tat dealers are not doing justice to the Fiat products.I feel FIAT must have more company owned showrooms all over the country. | Reply

I had test drove the Punto Diesel. I am a proud owner of Swift DDiS and as its almost 2 years old I was looking for Hatchback replacement. No car was there to replace swift in whole terms of cost, mileage and power.vista,Fabia,Jazz...maynot be Ritz.anyways the first impression when I saw the Punto was awesome.wonderfully done interiors, good tyres and everthing is good The looks are simply especially from front where it got a small twist of ferrari. Its also easy to get into the Punto (keep in mind comparison is always with hatchbacks). When I drove the car,its was simply disappointing. You will never say its the same engine in swift.yes the weight will be more, chnage in RPMs, who care all this.the ultimate thing is the power, not only the initial pick up , bu the later too.Engine was crying to get accelerated,as incase of Swift it was a reverse feeling where the engine asks you to pull it further and will not cry for power in 1st gear.I had so much expectations with Fiat and also the pricing was a good one.But i will not go for Punto when there is Swift.I am going to replace my swift with Swift only.(willl not cancel my booking..waiting for ABS vehicle :) ) | Reply

No Doubt! Fiat cars are good and great value for money. The engines are great...no wonder why Maruti and Tata plonk their engines in Swift and Indica Vista. But...and this is a big but...what about the qwnership experience. I have spoken to the Tata motors service guys and they say its really difficult to get spare parts for the Fiat cars and thats the story in Bangalore. Imagine the plight if you are in a small city. One example...you need to wait for a month to get a replacement bumper! Now thats ridiculous. And the prices are higher than Tata aswell. If Fiat is able to fix this problem, they surely would be the one to look up to. But till then, stick to desi brands. Its safer. | Reply

Why isn't fiat Punto or any other car coming with a three door atleast in these so called 'superhatch' (pls ignore the 500 - its not for the general public ;-))???I have seen the old Zen come up with one of these as a limited versionm long time ago and it looked really cool....These days we do not buy cars for a lifetime and more and more people are starting to have more than one car.....A three door will look much sportier and also the costs will come down......City people going to office etc., do not need five doors...also as I said earlier, the life of holding a car is less (max 7 yrs) so lot of people will buy this (it will take longer for kids to grow up etc.,) | Reply

i have been awaiting this car for the past 2yrs.But finally when it arrived i'm disappointed at the diesel engine specs.Might as well go for the swift diesel.a 90 bhp with 203 nm torq would have been a better option. | Reply

Looks to be a great buy at that price .... but Its all in the Name ....... So might not be able to compete with the well settled opponents .... But without any doubt most FIAT cars are awesome especially their Diesel engines.... | Reply

With this competitive price of GP, I don't see any reason for any one to buy Ritz and Swift Lxi, Ldi, Vxi and Vdi. Becoz GP is proper family car for 5 with more boot space and is better equipped with features. Only Zxi may be better deal. But Maruti is not able to supply Zxi due to lack of airbags. Further, GP is doing very good in Europe. Inside GP feels one class up from Maruti. | Reply

Good begining at last, though Fiat India still need to look at Customer Service satisfaction and other factors, such as there website is lousy, Punto micro-site is not responding (may be due to huge visits) but that's also part of planning. I tried downloading e-brouchure at different times with 2MBPS speed but the process ends with corrupted (half-downloaded) file. Most IMPORTANTLY, there is no sign of ARAI Approved test results of the MILEAGE of Petrol (1.2L, 1.4L) and Diesel (1.3L) models. I understand it is mandatory to publish ARAI test fuel efficiency results. Jazz, A-star, Ritz - all have shown the same in recent past. Overall, reliability and customer attention is something that FIAT needs to focus and have a long road ahead. | Reply

I think the time has come now. All the best for second innings!! I am confident that now Fiat will give other company's run for there money.Fiat should take care for after sales more seriously.Wishing you success. | Reply

And to top it all, for the Punto, the service interval is 30,000kms (unheard) and the 2 yrs warranty. All the best fiat and wish you great success with this release. | Reply

I used to have Fiat Sienna at one time(2000 - 2002) and that was the last car I had. The car was amazing. It was loaded version (but no airbags) and driving it was a pleasure. Solid, sturdy, economical (14 km/litre in city). Suspension was so good that you never felt tired. The point I am trying to make is that FIAT is a very good stable and one can blindly buy a Fiat. You will never regret it. Hyundai, Maruti (except maruti 800) is kid stuff in front of Fiat. | Reply

Fiat India has hit the sweet spot with the pricing for a car which is clearly one of the best hot hatches in the world. On the other hand, Honda's Jazz pricing was evidently a disaster! The rather hot Italian Maserati looks and the topline features makes this my choice for my next car.If only Fiat-Tata after sales service clicks - this could be a runaway success... a long time coming for Fiat in India! | Reply

The Grande Punto is one of the best and the fastest selling premium hatch in UK and all over Europe , In Europe this car has changed the fortune for Fiat by making it great selling brand and in India it will rock to overconfidently overpriced Jazz by Honda FOOLS ( I hope honda people read this and try to come out of eating too much sushi and repair their brains to reduce jazz's price by 2 lacs and wake up..... ). The most interesting thing is ,in the UK Punto is more expensive than Jazz , i20, swift, ritz and similar to fabia while as far as the UK hatch market is concerned The Punto is the bestseller and offers almost the same ride and handling quality by goodies like sound proof cabin , alloys and much more. While in India the same version comes as in the UK but at the Rocking prices......Well Done Fiat......and we don't have to worry about the service as the punto promises really great quality and value for money so friends Punto is rocking UK and Europe so lets hope that it does the same in India and helps the Honda Fools to wake up and do something good.....Truely priced Punto Wooooo...! | Reply

Fiat GP is all out to bury the Swift and put Ritz sale in hot water. Maruti is in great trouble. It seems competition is heating up for H/B and prices will come down soon. It will be buyer's market. By the end of the year used car market will go down as well. | Reply
