Tata brings Jaguar and Land Rover to India

It has been a little over a year since Tata Motors acquired the quintessential British Brands Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford Motor Company. Tata made sure that the acquisition process went smoothly and there was no hindrance to the working of both companies, which have their manufacturing facilities in the UK. Now Tata has brought the brands to India.

Tata Motors had acquired Jaguar and Land Rover in an all cash deal for US $2.3 billion. Both brands have had a past in India, however in recent times their popularity dwindled. This is a second innings of sorts, and now backed by Tata, it will be interesting to see how the first luxury brands owned by an Indian manufacturer shape up in the market.

I am a Mauritian, actually owning two latest Jaguar Cars. I think Tata should keep the manufacturing in U.K. only just to keep the name and value of the Jaguar Brand. If it is delocalised, world interest on these cars will disappear. These Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles will lose its hold on the Luxury cars market. Do not forget that the British have a world standard and name for the goods they manufacture in U.K. | Reply

READ THIS: If these cars were built in India, it would cost only a fraction of the current price tag and will destroy the competition. And Tata has everything it takes to open maufacturing plants in India. | Reply

well.... i do see a lot of discussion is revolving around the price of the car which i do agree is a tad steep for the indian consumers. Also many have suggested that TATA's should get the price down. Well the high price of the car is thanks to the high import duties levied which more than doubles up the price of the car. Can we blame the TATA's for this?? I would not. The only way they can bring down the cost is by locally manufacturing it which again is unfeasible when you actually look at th numbers that you hope to sell which if we take the most optimistic view would not be more than a 100 a year. Can we blame the TATA's??? That would again be an emphatic NO.well this is the reality and i guess we'll have to live with it.. :-( | Reply

American are already put off from buying ranger rovers here. The customer service took a nose dive, for example the dealership used to provide a demo range rover when you got yours for service or repairs... well no more!!! no free demos... cheap is what India is all about at home and at abroad... if you want to compete here do what the romans do in rome.... | Reply

It seems a funny trail of stories by Tata who is just knw for its diesel truks and buses and that too just cheap in terms of quality and reliability. Why would a fool spend such a whoping money for a vehicle bearing a brand tag of Tata? When mercedes and bmw are here to povide world class durabilty and service I think Tata is on the way to make more losses to its account! | Reply

People who buy beemers and mercs have extreamly ordinary tastes. No doubt they are good cars but the same run as cabs and rent vehicles in european countries, especially Germany. The appeal and ownership satisfaction of a Jag is to a completely different level and class...Hope Tata's dont dilute it.. | Reply

I accept, the price is steep, but it's mainly due to precarious taxes. Do you know, people are talking about Jag here, not about TATA cars. You should be crazy to compare two of them | Reply

Pricey, I would say. When I heard they are selling in India now thought of buying one for my parents (XF, as I have one and I absolutely love it). But now have doubts as not sure if they will have the supercharged version (XFR is too expensive for me) and second cannot comprehend extra 32L USD for buying in India. | Reply

63 lakhs for an XKR? They cost around 100K USD in the US! 63Lakhs is about 132K USD?That's a hell of a lot of money to ship them here. Maybe if TATA did a smaller sedan along the lines of a 300 series MB or a small sports car like the SLK MB for India and Asia that may be more reasonably priced, it may work better for the Indian market? And a RR Discovery for 63 L????? Are ya nuts? The Discovery is a low end SUV in the US compared to other SUVs | Reply

The headline sounds like "Santa brings gifts for Little John", when it is more like "Man brings his bleeding arm to hospital". At the present moment the developed world doesn't have a market for Jaguar and Land Rover. The only chance of these brands surviving is by entering developing markets like India. However it would be really nice if Tata could set up Jaguar's and Land Rover's manufacturing units in India. | Reply

well i think rather than reducing price tata should emphasize on surviving jaguar and landrover. Tata has best interest at heart for country. let TATA run it and make profit and then we will see far cheaper and better verison. | Reply

If TATA will start production here then the names will be changed from Jaguar to TATA cheetah and Land rover to TATA Load runner. There are many people in India who prefer imported cars rather than Indian produced cars, so let ot be dude. | Reply
  • Deepak Bhandarkar (28 June 2009 17:55)
Well, all prices are based on high import duties they attract, so cost gets double up in INDIA, it’s not TATA's fault anyway. For reducing cost they have to start production of these cars in INDIA. | Reply

Tata, prices are on the higher end, I was using an XJ 8 and the price was around 30 lakh. Though I found that there is nothing like this car's understated elegance, after 4 years or so very difficult to maintain. But I enjoyed the car very much. This alos means you will put the price of your flagship car more than 1 crore or what. Please bring the prices to the level of 60 lakh or so that more people can afford these beauties. Any way congrats fro bringing these two marques. The prices of Range Rover are also pretty high. In Dubai Range Rovers are costing around 25 lakh and 35 for the top of the range models. Thus Tatas should take the responsibility of reducing the prices. | Reply
