Tata all set to unveil its crossover SUV next year

The much anticipated crossover SUV from Tata is all set to be unveiled next year. Christened as either the Indicruz or the Xover, the car is expected to offer stiff competition to the likes of the Mahindra Xylo and the Toyota Innova.

The car was recently spotted undergoing a lot of testing on public roads. Just like Nano, Zigwheels is giving its readers one of the first glimpses of the camouflaged vehicle. As expected the vehicle is pretty generous in its dimensions. What is also noticeable is that the vehicle is much lower than the Xylo or the Innova making its 'Crossover' pedigree clear. The vehicle is expected to be heavily based on the Xover concept that was unveiled at the 2005 Geneva Auto Show.

According to Tata, the car will combine the advantages of a family luxury tourer with the driving dynamics of an SUV. According to industry sources a team of a 150 engineers are working on the product for the last three years. The UK R&D centre which designed the structure of the Nano is said to have made significant contributions for this car as well. And the effort shows. The test mules we saw were really galloping and we literally had to floor our Xylo to get a good snap.

With both the Xylo and the Innova doing great numbers, Tata will be hoping the vehicle goes well with the consumers and give a big boost to their UV-SUV sales.

Hi, I have never been so satisfied with any of the Indian SUV's when it comes to stability at a high speed. Be it a Scorpio or Safari. I presently drive a Toyota Fortuner and am very satisfied with its stability at high speeds say at 160-170 kmph. None of the Indian made SUV's are a comfortable drive at that speed. This is perhaps the precise reason why the Indian Cars are not so preffered in foreign countries where the roads call for high speeds. | Reply

Well, I agree with Dinesh. In fact I had a plan to go for some TATA vehicle way back in 2000 and instead of a TATA Indica, I ended up picking up an old Premier Padmini 137D Diesel and believe me, despite being a product from Premier, the car gave me good service and I drove it for almost 6 years with far lesser problems than an Indica. So I would definitely expect TATA Motors to move up and become a more mature car maker. | Reply

These reports are great pep reading. With TATA the first few batches of any new vehicle is beset with problems, which the company would later 'iron out,' The first customers therefore are the guinea pigs for any new TATA vehicle. They pay and get stuck. I own an Indica V2 and have faced terrible problems for the last seven years. I am sure I could have bought a bigger better car with all the money I have spent on it. Unfortunately, a car is not a thing which we buy everyday. Therefore I have to stay put till I can afford better. I have test driven the new Quadrajet Indica Vista. Excellent drive, but scared to buy. To top it my friend (who was to buy a Quadrajet Indica, too) has personally seen three Vista Quadrajets being towed away on separate ocassions in Bangalore. This confirms that the tradition of the first few customers being guinea pigs continues. Maybe it is sacrosanct now. When will TATA mature as a car maker remains a question | Reply
