Tata Nano: Love at first sight

Ever since the launch date for the Nano was announced, we at ZigWheels have become a frantic bunch with everyone raring to have a go behind its wheel. And that excitement multiplied by leaps and bounds when resident photographer Kunal and I spotted them running on the highways. Following them to get a closer look revealed that they were travelling at quite a fair clip and glancing on our A-star's speedo just confirmed that. The car's diminutive proportions didn't look so tiny after all and the car was oozing a fair bit of presence.

Watching it glide over the well paved highways was quite a sight and I am pretty sure it can handle worse conditions equally well. Coming back to the exteriors, the Nano is definitely something out of this world. Even the dimensionally (almost) similar REVA doesn't come close. The nice rakish front with clean straight lines get sporty overtones in the form of the ultra-cool and functional air scoops placed just ahead of the rear wheels (the Nano has a rear-mounted engine remember). The engine in the meanwhile was humming a buzzy tune belonging more to a big engined bike rather than your average car. These first glimpses definitely show the little car in very good light and it seems TATA has got it spot on. But only a real test can determine whether the Nano will be a hit or a miss. Watch this space for more.

Our chief photographer's take on the Nano

Nano looks great enginnering achivement by Tata Motors and dream achieved by Ratan Tata. However,we need wait and watch how it is going to perform on indian roads. And see how it will come to the people's expectation..... But really great work Ratan Tata. | Reply

This is the one car we can claim as our own. The day the car was launched, I remember the feeling of excitement and patriotic pride. Nano is to India as Coca Cola is to the US. | Reply

Somehow, Nano triggers some kind of patriotic feeling within us, and we would all want to possess it as a display of pride!!! After all, so many economically weaker people can now afford a car, that too an ALL INDIAN CAR with global sensation!!!! | Reply

I agree with the writer. Superb looking car and it is looking like that this will beat the 30 year young Maruti 800. I wish that NANO is without the " Wheel alignment defects" which was seen in Tata's Indicas, SUMOs and other vehicles. | Reply

Nano is absolute beautie . But will it mean burial of sweet Maruti 800 in 2009 at the young age of less than 30 ? People will buy it to be proud Indian. Nano is in auto industry what CHANDRAYAN (?) is in space industry to every Indian. | Reply
