Premier Rio launched!

Team ZigWheels 28 Oct 2009

Test Drive Premier Rio

The comeback vehicle for Premier Automobiles has been launched between Rs 5.25 lakh and Rs 5.95 lakh!

Premier Automobiles has launched the Rio compact SUV, in a bid to reclaim its place as a player in the Indian automotive scene. The vehicle was launched today in Mumbai, and is expected to rival not only entry level SUVs but also some of the larger hatchbacks in the market, with its space, presence and a diesel engine as its USPs.

With its significantly higher headroom, the Rio also offers more storage space than the large hatchbacks without enlarging its exterior dimensions significantly. Premier is touting the vehicle as India's first compact diesel SUV, which in fact is true given that the similarly structured and positioned Maruti Suzuki Gypsy comes only with a petrol engine option.

The pricing of the Rio, after taking the Premier brand into consideration, could have been a little more cut-throat. The car has been launched at a price of Rs 5.25 lakh for the base version without air-conditioning and power steering, Rs 5.50 lakh for the mid-version with A/C and power steering, and Rs 5.95 lakh for the top of the line model with alloy wheels, roofrails and ABS with EBD.

I have taken a test ride today after locating the Delhi dealer on net.The vehicle looks good for that price, but I had a BIG disappointment for the Engine sound and the vibrations even when you are driving at 30kmph.The engine sound is worse than a Tavera. I am highly disappointed as I had high expectations which came craashiiing.......I SUGGEST NOT TO PLAN ONE TILL YOU HAVE A REFINED VERSION AVAILABLE... | Reply

Made in China stuff. Better be careful rather than be sorry later. Never know what will come out when. Then there will be no after sales service. If you don't mind your money go down the drain please buy it. Otherwise just don't even look towards it. It is after all made in China. Don't know how many people are getting exploited to make this. | Reply

Buyers need to look into many aspects. Let the vehicle hit the road. Get feed back after few months. This is needed beacuse it has a chinese heart, not trust worthy, do not get carried away and be surprised if the product vanishes away in few months. I strongly feel it as another peice of Junk dumped on costumers. People need to think before buying such products. Product made in INDIA is so costly......people should not be fooled. No price regulation in India, be aware. | Reply

I do not understand why all people from india worried about engine capacity. I am indian who lives in europe for a long time. I drive BMW 318 and Alfa Romeo. And thinking to change one of it with a small diesel car with a good mileage. Here companies are minimizing the engine capacity and people are also looking for a small engine with good mileage these days. while people in India think about big engines. Why you need an elephant to run 200 meter race? one rabbit can do it better. You have no problem to travel with 7-8 in a maruti omni wich has got absalutely nothing rather than 4 tyres, and caring too much about this one. I think this small SUV is very much suited for many indian conditions. And i was looking for a small diesel SUV for long time for my Indian village house use. And i think this one is the right choice. Even if Gypsy have a diesel engline, i wont go for it, bcx that look very much like a rural vehicle with poor mileage. And i remember people from india disagree the old peogeot 406, while it has got one of the best diesel engine that time. And was the only world class diesel car on road in India that time. | Reply

Thats a pure copy of Honda CRV not the latest but the older version of CRV, n its much smaller than CRV in length, I think its worth the money cause, Its a car to use for 5 years n junk it up. With 1500 CC for a diesel car n 65 bhp thats so tiny for such a huge car just imagine 5 guys in the car I doubt, its gonna be a rough ride, i think the engine gonna burst out due to pressure. Guys who r thinking of having this car for longer period do not go for this, best suited for taxis, | Reply

This looks pretty good market to capture. It doesn't matter if its copy. If it delivers quality then it willl be a success. If it doesn't then a world proved concept will come into picture. This is a pirated copy of Daihatsu-Terios > Toyota-Cami > Perodua-Kembara by the Chinese company Zotye. Finally our Premier had to resort to duplicating pirated copies to revive themselves. Do they take us Indians to be that STUPID? Having tasted world class cars like i10, i20, A-Star, Ritz, Punto, Linea etc etc I wonder how many will dish out 5.5L for this cheapcopy. | Reply

I am confident - the future is large hatchbacks (eg Swift - it did pretty well) and compact SUVs like this. Premier Rio might not do well, but in the near future the market could be flooded with Hyundai, Honda etc coming out with these compact SUV models. All those who are criticising the shape/look etc are not looking at the price tag. That's like looking at Nano and saying - is that really a car? Yes it is, for the price tag that's all you get. Indian roads and driving conditions logically lead to compact cars with sturdy suspensions. Personally I won't trust Premier for after-sale service. But if other companies come out with such cars, I'd definitely be interested. | Reply

Looks a bit like the Diahatsu Terios. All SUVs in India are over priced. Hyundai Tuscon top of the line Automatic with sunroof retails at Rs. 8 lakhs in the Gulf but in India they sell it at 15 lakhs. Honda CRV Retails at 11 lakhs int he gulf while in India ist over 18 lakhs, Same with the fortuner. The Mitsubishi Pajero sell at 11 lakhs in the gulf while in India the sell it around 22.Absolutely makes no sense as to why the foreign SUVs use such a pricing for India.India needs an Home grown SUV to bring down the prices which are just being inflated by the foreign players. | Reply

Very wrong interpretation of difference in prices. The TAX and other regulatory structure related to these prices is the driving factor for these differences in prices...and not the country factor. With traffic increasing and small cars managing to navigate more comfortably than bigger cars, more and more people are switching to hatchbacks and a compact SUV like this seems like a great idea.
