New Hero Honda Karizma ZMR launched!

New Hero Honda Karizma ZMR launched!

Team ZigWheels 21 Sep 2009

The bike that kick started the Indian big-bike scene has received its first major revamp. Read on to check out the pricing and the details of the new bike!

Hero Honda has launched the revamped version of its performance motorcycle, the Karizma ZMR. Introduced at a price of Rs 91,000 ex-showroom Delhi, the new bike will go up against the likes of other performance bikes in the Indian market such as the Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTSi and the Yamaha YZF-R15.

Ford Fusion

Hero Honda has ensured that the new bike is not just a cosmetic upgrade, but the changes in the exteriors and the design are major and will establish the Karizma ZMR as an all-new bike. The ZMR now features a full fairing that clads the entire engine to pronounce the big-bike feel. Redesigned rear quarter panels and an all new LED taillamp round up the design changes on the new bike.

The engine sees a mild power upgrade from 16.8PS to 17.6PS, but now features fuel-injection that replaces the carburetor. Taking a cue from its competitors, the new bike has also been fitted with an oil-cooler, which should take some of the heat off the completely clad yet air-cooled engine.

On the features front, the new bike sports clip-on handlebars and an all-new digital speedo-tacho unit. The bike seems well kitted for its price, but the competition seems to have a headstart in terms of technology and outright performance. We should be getting our test bike soon, so watch out for a complete road test with performance figures real soon on ZigWheels.com!

john (18 January 2010 21:03) Reply to RAHUL
because they have concentrated more on the mileage, Performance and comfort.. Pulsar 220 is faltoo.. its waste in terms of performance its only good at speed.. | Reply
ABHISHEK (19 January 2010 08:03) Reply to john
i have driven both pulsar 220 and test drive the new karizma zmr.. but new zmr is far more superior than the pulsar 220..its whole ergonomics, reliability ,comfort level, its height ,riding position, smooth running at 100 speeds for hours ..it is the ideal touring bike in india keeping in view of the standard road conditions in india..pulsar is only ahead in terms of speed and power that is 140 kmph..or else there is nothing great about pulsar ..it is certainly not easy to drive for those who are tall and almost 6 feet.. moreover pulsars gear shift pattern is too harsh and grunt.. KARIZMA MAKES U FEEL AS IF UR RIDING ONA COMFY CRUIESER...MOST COMFORTABLE OF THEM ALL .. SPECIALLY IN CASE OF TALL PERSONS.. | Reply
abinash (20 January 2010 00:08) Reply to ABHISHEK
Ok iam neutral on the issue of 220 vs zmr. Ok guys its all a matter of perception zmr low in power but a much more stable bike in terms of a long term tourer and pulasr is a powerful bike for thos who believe in performance only. Now ask urself what do you want. You want a bike that makes it presence feel along the path it takes with comfort and substance or want a more kind of a sports maniac kind of feel with power only.My vote goes for the zmr

In Pulsar 220, If FI was propely funcational then the Fuel economy of FI should be better then carb since power is the same. Guys at HH are slower then Snail in lanching new products(I dont count sticker changes as new products), but the fact remains HH wont do a U-turn. The economy of ZMR should be better then Karizma R. I bet on that. Digest that Mr. Varun Garg and live with ur so called P220 or whatever it is. | Reply

@Varun:- I m not the only one comparing Karizma with a P220. P220 is good but I dont like the refinement levels and build quality. and If P220 was that good, then why did the revert back to carb from FI? is it not only because of cost. IT is also because the FI-fitted P220 was not getting any benefits from FI. Bajaj gave you FI just for name sake. | Reply

Nice metallic paint. The bike is big and will make other bikes in it category look like babies in front of it. This is one of the best looking bikes ever produced by an Indian Motorcycle company. But while manufacturing and producing components, it is the company itself who has to implement that. Honda provides the consultancy and expertise for Hero Honda. Hero Honda implements those suggestions in their assembly lines. So I am not sure as to which is the company that does this for Bajaj. Nikhil:- Test drive Karizma R or pulsar 220 on a long drive if possible. This should give you a fair idea of the machines. Go for first hand experience. My choice would be Apache RTR 180 or Karizma R | Reply
  • Durgesh (29 September 2009 15:02)
Lets see if this gets posted!!!!!Karan:- I did not take info from Karizma Owner... I was myself a karizma owner. I had to give it off since I had to go out of india. My cousin has P220 and friend has R15. SO i have a pretty much a decent experience on these machines. Other then top speed and low price P220 does not have anything to brag about. And when u r driving for how much time do you remain in top speed or in 3 digits? hardly a fraction. And pulsars have the worst gear boxes compared to TVS, Yamaha, Honda or Hero Honda. After 2-3 years the refinement levels drop in Pulsar. There are more break downs, false neutrals and rattles. Refinement comes in picture only after bike is old. Don't take my word for it. Go and check the ratings on J.D. Power associates. Your statements show how much you know about bikes. Next time see to it that you keep your comments to yourself and the bikes. I would appreciate that. I am here for discussion, not for argument. If anyone feels I dont know anything about bikes please let me know. I will quit posting my comments. Let ZMR come on roads.... u will get your answers. | Reply

you must engine power and some more pictours, and new improved tech.now a days, compitetion is so strong, that's why you must put the tubeless tyres, and the twin spark plug tech.and some more colour optionsaperate seatsand i don't know about the heandle bar, because i can't see, but you must work on it, like apache-RTR-160front head lamps should be made from led, or could be of projector type, like pulser 220, but tubeless tyres are mustbecause hero honda is a name of trust, thanksand Pulsor 220 | Reply

Yes.... go ahead and buy Bajaj..... inherit the clutch problems, false gears and loss of refinement after 2-3 years....... there is a clip wherein Karizma R beats Bajaj p220 on a track. I have emphasised before as well. Not all things can be put on paper like built quality, refinement etc. | Reply

Old Karizma is better then ZMR only for repairing. FI bikes will have problems getting repaired if they break down in middle of nowhere. But I feel they wont since they are from stable of Hero Honda and if you keep care of the bike it is bound to be highly dependable. Safety and technologywise ZMR is better then Karizma R. Inwhat terms are people saying that Karizma R is better I still dont know. Maybe it is costly because of FI and rear disk breaks etc. The changes are not cosmetic. Infact the only thing retained are cosmetic, chasis and engine... which are a good part. Karizma has reached perfection with ZMR. I dont think any bike can be better the ZMR for indian roads in 225-250 CC category!!!!! | Reply

Bullet is good for touring, but what about city driving and those short bursts of acceleration of the red light? bullet is a specialist for touring, but too many niggles. I might upset Bullet fans, but I will buy a bullet only for extreme touring. But I wont hesitate to hop on a karizma. I have driven a bullet standard from mumbai to ahmedabad and a karizma from mumbai to goa. both are equally comfortable, but Karizma gave me 33 kpl whereas bullet gave me 29kpl. That is a huge difference. Effecienc does count on long drives other then feel and dependability. | Reply

Every bike has its pros and cons. The Bullet Machismo 500 is far ahead if you talk of touring. And in terms of speed, it hits 135km/h too which is pretty decent too. And you should also check the looks of this bike. Pretty classy I would say. | Reply

Things are different on paper and different on road. On-road what matters is comfort, reliability, built quality and yes after sales..... Karizma ZMR ticks all the boxes. I have diven R15 and P220. I would not trust myself with these bikes on long drives. For indian roads Karizma is better wether it is for touring =, cruising or drag racing. Every time you turn the throttle one can really feel the reliability and built quality and above all seating comfort. | Reply

i think the herohonda is still living on the success of the splendor. and after that none of their bike clicked in the market.. while pulsar and apache rules the market for last few years. Honda havent made much changes in this model after its first launching... while even yamaha have trend setting model in FZ and r15... honda have to realise the changes in the mindset of the new generation in india... its not the same as a decade back when they launched splendor... its not just economy comfort, power and styling does matters.. see this new model its having a lot of similarities with their passion and other models.. they have to launch bikes similar to their international models | Reply

Hey cranks at Hero Honda!! What kind of market analysis are you people involved in to launch a product that only you guys are content with?? You guys could be the worlds largest two wheeler manufacturer or have a very strong partnership with Honda, but you are so very lost in maintaining your sales figures and partnership going strong that you have virtually ignored what a real bike enthusiast would actually want to go for!!! What are you guys upto??? Keep manufacturing chariot like, jazzy looking, weird bikes??? (No offences meant to anyone owing a Hero Honda bike here…), stay off from fuel injection or oil cooled engines and try making your bikes look subtle and more purposeful, with more juice in the engines!! STOP feeding us with your overly designed; good for nothing, emotionally charged advertisements we are not in the pre independence era to shed tears and go buy your product! We would rather smile and bid adieu to you today for all the junk you manufacture today!! I really pity all your designers and engineers who are being wasted without exploring their real talent!! I am sure that the bike will only be good and comfortable for riders with next to no performance increase to justify its high price. Hope someone is there within Hero Honda who knows what to do with big bikes rather than just make large cubic capacity commuters. The styling seems to be all Karol Bagh variety. I am being critical because much is always expected from Hero Honda but apart from the 100cc class they have always failed to meet our expectancy. HH Fans might shell that kind of money, but then there are Yamaha liquid cooled engine for a similar price, and P220 for 70k exshowroom which means its 21k less than HH karizma Fi.. Arghhh! 1st major revamp and this is all you could do? When are you going the 'monoshock' way? What about 17" wheels? Karizma was always a good bike but needs a real major revamp. No thanks!!! | Reply

Guys !I feel its a coool bike; Indian hayabusa, i would say.. Why to buy a non-Fi pulsar n save 20k. HeroHonda had been giving sexy prdcucts ,isnt it. I saw bike yesterday on road in grgaon; it looked saaaxxxy. | Reply

hero honda should be only 'hero'. Honda word should be cut off. Its shame on HONDA for such a DRASTIC PRESENTATION. no more words to say, this newbike is self describing its self. | Reply

Its always been a good bike and it will prove itself again. But for some people, they believe in cheap things like the pulsar 220. If stats were all, then Ducati might have had gone bankrupt and Bajaj, the most bike selling company till date. Bt its nt that way. Don't u HH fans agree with me??? And let the others buy cheap things, lets see how good they are??????Well, in our case, we have the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | Reply

all these Indian bikes which have full fairing, dont they look ridiculous with the thin tyres? now i am not saying that they are bad in terms or technology and handling and all that, but why the thin tyres? the Fazer looks good, but its performance is another story. | Reply
