New Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTSi: Rebirth of the Streetfighter!

Varad More 05 Feb 2010

Bajaj Auto's new model assures to be fast, fierce and fun. By the looks of it, the new Pulsar 220 DTSi does seems like a potent street brawler which has the muscle to match its attitude

Dauntlessly walking on the performance path in a country which moves on 100cc machines, Bajaj Auto has indeed made its presence felt locally as well as globally by maintaining the top spot in the performance segment in India since the first generation Pulsars rolled out of the Chakan plant near Pune. Since then, the company has been constantly innovating new technologies and incorporating them in the Pulsar line-up. Bajaj Auto pulled a fast one when it introduced the Pulsar 200 DTSi early in 2008 and the bike went on to be one of the most successful models in the Pulsar family. Last year when the company decided to bring an end to this naked hooligan, bikers all around the country gave out a cry of disappointment, for while the new 220 DTSi had the goods it did not have the naked appeal. While a few speculated that a bigger and better 200 was on the cards, Bajaj Auto maintained silence which only left many bikers puzzled and even dejected.

It is time now for the India bikers to get there gloves on again thanks to the revival of a new naked Pulsar with a bigger engine and improved performance. The new Pulsar 220 DTSi fills the gap in the Indian performance segment for a naked performance bike. While many prefer fairings and large sporty bodywork, an aggressively styled streetfighter with matching performance has its own niche. The new Pulsar 220 DTSi promises to deliver all that and more. The new bike carries forward the exact same bodywork as seen on the Pulsar 200 DTSi and has no other cosmetic changes apart from the decal on the sharp rear tail panel that now proclaims the bike's new displacement. Yes, the new bike is now up on power and performance thanks to the new 220cc DTSi powerplant that it borrows from its faired counterpart - the Pulsar 220F DTSi.

The new Pulsar 220 now packs in more power and torque over its predecessor along with peppier power delivery throughout the rev-range. The new model weighs in at a lower 148kg, which will not only translate into a nimbler handling but also enhances the overall performance of the bike. And once again, like it stumped the industry by putting an incredibly enticing price-tag on the Pulsar 220F DTSi, Bajaj Auto has once again delivered when it comes to pricing on this new hooligan. Retailing at Rs 69,425 (Ex-showroom, Delhi), the Pulsar 220 DTSi looks well prepared to revive the 200's short-lived glory days - hopefully for a longer duration this time around.

Yes Irfan. Its true, new version came. Initially I didn't see the bike in bajaj web so I thought its fake. I own 220 cc dtsi. Its TOO GOOD man. If you drive at 145 kmph also it will be in full control. Mileage is 38 kmpl in city. Never tested on hihways. It is THE BIKE. I advice you to to buy 220cc DTSi version instaed 220cc DTSi s version. Bigger headlight and look ll be great. Other version wil look simple and old.. | Reply

This one's good... though would love to see a two cylinder engine with 4 valve per cylinder, full fairing with few graphics and definitely some colour options other than the regular blue, black, red and gray ones... | Reply

i just wanna say that they should work on design more cuz its look like a small upgraded version of yamaha szr 660 n this is very disappointing n i think they needs to work on the design rather than copying it from other company's old bike n one more point if they need help they can consultants people in india cuz young indian's have some brainstroming ideas about the design anyways i am not the judge of any thing here so i have just written what i feel about this bike cuz its just look so same in design so its very disappointing for me i dont know about others | Reply

would have looked deadly with full fairings - like the new ZMR. Why doesnt BAL come up with a customisable bike - choose fairings if u want to, else buy a naked bike? I've owned a P150 for about 6 years now and am still in love with it, but for a change i'd love to drive one with full fairings. | Reply
  • Nitin (08 February 2010 12:10)
Well... this not what was expected from bajaj auto known for incorporating cutting edge technologies in its bikes ... at least i expected some which looked diffrent something like the agressive styled yamaha FZ-16 or more like KTM bikes .. but sadly thats not the case ..still waiting for that ferocious street fighter from Bajaj | Reply

I have Bajaj 150 CC vehicle is good for just first two years from then onwards it is giving problem chains getting loosen, bobbling if you go more than 90 km. Everytime I tell this problem in the service centre and they say that it is address but it is not. Moreover, I see a common problem of vehicle getting rusted within 2 years. I have all my friends complained about this.Somebody from bajaj company should look into this. | Reply

Pulsar 150.. 2002 oct. Sunk in mumbai in July deluge.. Gives 45kmpl at avg riding speeds of 60kph. Does a max of 110. You are either careless or downright unlucky. | Reply

I just mesmerized that day, on which I had decided to own a bike, u will be shocked to hear that I was moving from office to show room to book my bike (which was certainly not 220) and fortunately I discussed this thing with one of my friend and without having a second thought he said that he will give me lift to the show room and he ask me to drive his newly owned bike and then I ride first time 220 and in that drive I discovered all the feature which I was trying to find in the ideal bike, are clubbed in single machine (in 200-300cc segment). In the journey to show room, I changed my mind and now I have mine 220.If you are planning to buy any other bike then don’t dare to drive 220, because it will definitely lead to change your mind. | Reply

I guess this returns the Pulsar back to its purest roots. However I am divided in my mind as to whether this is good for the Pulsar or bad for the 220! | Reply
