Mid-size Diesel Sedan Rivals

Fiat Linea

The new Linea with revolutionary 1.3 litre Multijet diesel motor makes the Linea a superb car to have in this segment. Great European styling, oodles of space and comfort at an extremely competitive price give the Linea superior value for money. However, Fiat's poor service back-up and the lack of initial punch through the rev-range of the Linea diesel are a let down. The Ford Fiesta's peppy 1.4 Duratorq motor keeps the power handy all the time and this takes the driveability of the Fiesta to a newer level.

Hyundai Verna

The Hyundai Verna's 1.5 litre CRDi diesel motor is a lot of fun when to drive with its peppy power delivery and superb refinement. Hyundai has definitely improved the quality of its cars over the years and one of the first cars to see better parts quality was the Verna model. Overall, the car is a decent buy but not quite a smasher on all fronts. The handling isn't all that great and the styling takes time to grow over you. Fuel economy is just average, but when you give her the stick, it drops significantly. However, the strong point Verna diesel has in its kitty is phenomenal in-town driveability and very good performance.

Mitsubishi Lancer

Chervolet Aveo

Mitsubishi's old workhorse, the Lancer hasn't received any major upgrades since its launch and now its age clearly shows. The car boasts of solid build quality and refined motor but the dated looks and lousy handling hamper the overall performance of the Lancer. The modern-day sedans are way ahead in terms of equipment, feel, comfort and driveability. Especially the new Ford Fiesta which is miles ahead of its diesel counterparts as an overall product.

Fiat Linea MJD naturally ..with most advanced MultiJet engine technology in the world. Clearly sweeps other cars in this segment , coupled together with rigid and sturdy body , extremely responsive steering wheel , fantastic road grip and handling and delivering 15kmpl in city and 21 kmpl on highways for me .With this solid built quality and such mileage , what more you could ask for ?? hi, i am abhilash from mangalore . recently i bought a new FIAT LiNEA EMOTION PK(PETROL) version.. i find the vehicle much worth for its price tag.. jus for 8.7 lakhs . u have the best features avialable in its class with BLUE ME technology, fully controlled steering wheel, alloywheels , blaupunkt cd player, rm rest in both front and back and also a wonderfull driving experience... trust me the vehicle is so smooth in both handling and driving... the petrol version gives me around 10kmpl in city and around 12 kmpl on highyway. diesel edition gives more... more over the interiors are very spacious , actractive and luxurious. the first servive is oly at 15000 km which i feel has much advantage over hyundai verna.. test drive the fiat and you will know the differnce... on my personal front, i prefer you go ahead with FIAT LINEA | Reply

Hyundai's were always been reverse - engineers. Majority of korean businesses were infact based on reverse engineering - then they grow up on it. It shows in there product portfolio also.hyundai's diesel engines are always not worth the money as they start creating problems like sounds/vibration/smoke/oil consumption etc little after about 75000 Kms..so spending 1-2 lakh extra for a diesel wont pay up on a hyundai any way.(I owe a santro, a petra, Uno and not biased to fiat but I love fiat cars for their built quality, technology and handling) - Buy a better car when u can - dont look at the resale value if u r not a car dealer or a trader. cars are not like keeps, they are like wives - last a long time with us . . . | Reply

This is a totally biased statement in favor of Fiesta and against Linea. Your statement would certainly discourage future car buyers. Maybe you have only comparing with the engine performance. You have to see the car as a whole before publishing a biased comment. I own a Linea MJD Emotion Pk and what a car it is. I also own a Ford Ikon. I have driven Ford Fiesta as well, but Linea is ages ahead of any car in this segment (below 10 lakhs). If I were given the choice, Linea would be the No.1 in this list. The features, the styling, the ride | Reply

Fiat Linea is an over-all better package than any other diesel. I own Emotion Pack version and have had 1 service also done. The quality of service has improved and the car has no comparisons as it gives 15km/l in city with ac on all the times. Plus the features it provides for the price, i think it has to the best in this category | Reply

I did disagree to this article completely being biased to ford. Look at the Linea, you probably cant pick on it at all it comes spotlessly clean in all areas of driveability, mileage, handling, space, comfort etc; Now coming to the service part I think TATA-FIAT guys are gearing up well to service this car. I am not making an assumption, I am owning a MJD linea and its the best of the 4 cars I have owned earlier. I also travel across the eurioe extensively and believe me FIAT is like maruti there. It is not justice to make comments without experiencing service first hand. I have had my fair share of displeasure a couple of years earlier with TATA cars but I judged Linea for its build and quality and gave the credit of better service coming out of TATA now. If you are making biased statements, you are only discouraging people from making a very sensible buy. the MJD linea deliver 15 kmpl on deisel with AC on congested bangalore road, I dare any other car in this segment to come up and say that they did better the fiat in mileage, comfort and space. | Reply

Yea i agree, i'm surprised Hyundai Verna CRDi is missing. It would have left these two cars miles behind!!! Abdolute beast! Though it may not handle like Fiesta and Linea, i feel its a better package overall. | Reply
