Now we're talking about the proper meat of the sedan segment - right from the least expensive sedans up to the ones costing Rs. 15 lakh. Right from the entry-level sedans like the Maruti-Suzuki Swift Dzire to the mid-range Ford Fiesta to the slightly higher side like the Volkswagen Jetta, all of these fall into this segment. Traditionally, this wide class is what racks up a majority of the sedan sales in the country and is the second most selling category after the hatchbacks. This segment has heated up a lot this year with strong contenders from across the globe, featuring the Indians in the form of Tata, the Italians in the form of Fiat, the Czechs with Skoda and Americans with Chevrolet.
Our nominees for the best mid-size sedan of the year are as follows:
Tata Indigo Manza:
The much anticipated sedan from Tata finally showed up near the end of this year. It represents a significant step up from the old Indigo as it moves the car from an inexpensive, entry-level sedan to a more up-beat and up-market position, while still retaining a very high value-for-money proposition. Apart from the upgraded looks, the new Indigo Manza offers much improved interior space and comfort along with great boot space, besting nearly all cars in its class, and even a few which are a notch higher. Engine options for this new car include a 1.4-litre petrol mill as well as the brilliant Fiat-derived 1.3-litre Quadrajet diesel powerplant. Though significantly improved from its predecessor, build quality is still not as up to the mark as some of its competition.
