Maruti plans diesel variants of SX4, Ritz

Chanchal Pal Chauhan | ET             14 Apr 2009

SX4

New Delhi: The success of diesel variants of Swift and DZire models, which have a waiting list of months, has propelled passenger car maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), which makes every second car sold in India, to introduce diesel engines in its other cars, a senior company official said.

The company's hatchback Ritz, which will be launched next month, will have a diesel avatar sporting a 1.3-litre engine. "There is a good demand for diesel cars in the Indian market, and we are looking at the possibility of introducing more diesel engine options. But, we face some capacity constraints for expansion," MSI managing director S Nakanishi said. The car maker produces two lakh 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engines in India, some of which are exported to the parent Suzuki's subsidiaries in Hungary. Mr. Nakanishi declined to comment on which cars the company was considering to offer diesel variants.

"Diesel cars are becoming very popular as they are more fuel-efficient and cheaper to run. Both our Swift and DZire diesel variants outstrip the sales of their petrol siblings. We, currently, don't manufacture any diesel engines other than the 1.3-litre multi-jet and sourcing a new engine may take some time," another MSI official said.

Maruti's parent company, Suzuki Motor Corporation, sells the 1.6-litre diesel variant of its SX4 sedan in Europe by sourcing the engines from Peugeot and Fiat. The same car in India is available in petrol variant only. The company also sells the 1.9-litre DDiS diesel variant of the Grant Vitara SUV in the UK. Maruti does not have diesel offerings in Alto, WagonR, Zen Estilo and the recently launched A-Star.

According to market experts, Maruti's expansion of its diesel portfolio is aimed at halting the onslaught of its biggest rival - Hyundai - that plans to launch diesel variants of its small cars i10 and i20.

according to me sx4 rocks.i have read all reviews and have checked many magazines...finally i have come to the conclusion that sx4 is a very nice car.Safety takes the first place in this car, style is also present, enough of leg space, good ground clearance, the car has so much to offer us and that also with such a competitive price. What else a car owner wants. | Reply

SX4's engine is a rocker, and you've got Maruti's amazing A.S.S, cheap spares, and resale possibilities. Fiesta might be history say 5-10 years later, but you could still sell SX4s. Still, I'd settle for Maruti and get peace of mind | Reply

I agree . SX 4 has limitations but then every car has.Average of petrol in city drive with ac on is 10 km only.Dezire gives 14 km | Reply

the Sx4 is already overpriced (for what you presently get) and the diesel will be atleast Rs 75 k more....so Maruti will not make much progress on the sales front as Fiat Linea which is much better car is upgrading their diesel engine to 1.9 litre TDI !!! | Reply

Maruti always wake up to ground reality far too late. Were they introduce Gypsy and their vesta van with diesels, they would have a much larger share of the market from Mahindra jeeps and Tata Sumo. | Reply

im a bit disapointed with Hyundai, they are not maintaing the momentum they brought in few years ago, their vehicles are highly over priced and literally they are not able to put all pieces of a puzzle to gather.primarily their vehicles are over priced, they need to look inwards to cut down on costs and give some response to maruti | Reply
  • Arun Kumar Sharma (15 April 2009 12:26)
Hyundai is sleeping on this decision since very long, once maruti gets the market hold it will be difficult for Hundai to catch up. | Reply
