Jaguar all set to go hybrid with the XJ

Abhishek Nigam        2 July 2009

Jaguar XJ

After digging its paws on Indian shores, Jaguar is now all set to launch the world's first electric-drive luxury saloon thanks to the European Union agreeing for a loan for the new green technology.

The groundbreaking Jag XJ will use similar technology to the Vauxhall Ampera/Chevy Volt. The mentioned cars run on electric power from batteries that are charged mainly by connecting to the grid, but are also capable of being recharged on the move by a small capacity engine. Jaguar expects the green limo to provide an electric range of 48 km combined with a fuel economy of 24 kmpl and a top speed of 180 km/h. The all aluminium body should ensure a low kerb weight while the powertrain is being developed in collaboration with Lotus. Jaguar seems to have pledged to look at more extensive use of lightweight materials like aluminium across the range.

The influx of cash will definitely boost Jaguars green investments. Cash will infused in the development of full hybrids, micro-hybrids, small capacity diesel engines and soft turbocharged petrol engines.

While the all new XE two-seat sportscar is supposed to be a variant of the next generation alloy XK Jag is also supposedly reconsidering making the XF replacement in alloy. Another option being considered is to dress steel cars in alloy body panels which would easily shave off around 100 kg of weight. Once the hybrids are added to the model range, Jaguar will finally have one of the most well rounded lineups in the luxury segment.

Tatas would do what they plan and perform as did in the past. It is a distinct vacation for the rich of India who clandestinely import and at times land in leagal tangles. What a relief for a rich Indian to have the best in India and a technology to be dreamt only. Best wishes for Tatas | Reply
