Honda Jazz To Drive In With 'India Specific' Engine

9 June 2009

Honda Jazz

The Honda Jazz hatchback from Honda Siel Cars India, which is all set to grace Indian roads shortly, will now drive in with an India specific engine. It has been confirmed that the Jazz will feature a 1.2 litre i-VTEC unit that has been designed for optimal drivability and efficiency.

The powertrain for the Jazz is a four cylinder, 1198 cc state of the art i-VTEC engine that features Programmed Fuel Injection which allows the unit to develop a healthy 90PS @ 6,200 rpm and a decent torque figure of 112Nm @ 4800 rpm.

Honda Jazz

As per ARAI test data, the Jazz is capable of returning a fuel efficiency of 16.1 kmpl, however real world test conditions will give a clearer picture on this front once the car is tested. Like all Honda engines today, the 1.2 i-VTEC unit is also E10 compatible and meets Euro IV emission norms.

Like all Honda engines, which are truly gems in their own right, the 1.2 litre i-VTEC is also expected to live up to the refined and frugal nature that Honda is known for producing. The Jazz is set for a June debut and is expected to be priced around the Rs 7 lakh price bracket. It might sound expensive, but as of right now its more of a wait and watch game to see just what Honda packs into this hatchback to make it worth the moolah.

Ritz looks impressive. Better than all other hatchback. price, looks, space are far better than any other cars in this segment. The mileage would play vital role. Lets wait for the mileage to get updated. | Reply

ritz looks different, can be noticeable in many small cars. Price wise it is ok. its small size will make easy drive in traffic. most useful in big city. power steering enjoyable. sound system will trilled you.on the whole its nice package | Reply

I am also waiting for launching of JAZZ. As others have mentioned, this hatchback should be within Rs.6.00 L on road, only then people will go for in or else for sedan like Aveo or Dzire. | Reply

AGREED..IT WIL DEFINTLY BE A BIG BIG DISASTER FOR HONDA IF JAZZ IS PRICED AT 7 LAC..SENSIBLE PEOPL WIL GO 4 HONDA CITY RATHR THAN BUYNG A 7LAC HATCHBAK..MAJORITY OF INDIAN CONSUMERS ARE STIL PRICE CONSCIOUS..HONDA STRATEGISTS MUST HAVE 2 BE FOOLS IF THEY PRICE IT 2 HIGH...BETR THEY TAKE A QUE FROM FABIA'S FAILURE... | Reply

A long wait for Jazz......comes to an end on 10.06.09 fingers crossed on the price Tag...Hope it is priced keeping Indian market in Mind. This model can give good numbers to Honda for increasing the market share provided the price is Below Rs 7 Lac. As far as the car, as I have seen with the HOnda Dealer..... it is just a Superb car. Eagerly awaiting for 10.06.09 and Book the engineering Marvel. | Reply

Honda jazz-very much awaiting car. But unless the price needs to be reduced in span of 5 laks, it will definitely fail in Indian markets. Hope the company will look into this and reduce the price tag to the bearable minimum from 5 to 5.5 lakhs to all of its variants to have a competitive market. Hope for needful.....?? | Reply

Hi Honda,If the price of car is 5L, then introduce this car, if u are going to price this car at 7L better don't introduce it, nobody want your highly priced Hatchback in India, Which would be a costly mistake. First analyze the market before fixing the price. Hope u would be reading our comments. | Reply

Tarun,What you drive in UK must be having better than 1.2 liter eingine that is being offered in ndia. Honda has this typical habit of not offering the best till competetion comes. Even in Honday city, they introduced new model with airbags only after Maruti launched better safety features in SX4 | Reply

I HAVE READ ALL THE COMMENTS AND I AM SURPRISED NO ONE HAS ACTUALLY APPRECIATE THE QUALITY OF THIS CAR AND ALL THE FOCUS IS ON THE PRICE TAG.I AM USING THIS CAR FOR LAST 2 YEARS IN UK; AND THIS CAR IS AMAZING. IT HAS A COMFORT DRIVE, ALL ADEQUATE SPECIFICATIONS, GOOD MILES PER GALLON, 5 STAR EURO NCAP RATING AND HIGHLY HIGHLY RELIABLE CAR. I HAVE DRIVEN SO FAR AROUND 40000 KM WITH THIS CAR AND IT IS JUST WONDERFUL. AT PRESENT NO CAR IN MARKET IS AS GOOD AS THIS WITH EVERYTHING. DRAWBACKS WITH THIS CAR; SHAPE IS NOT THAT ASTONISHING; BUT THE LATEST MODELS ARE MUCH BETTER LOOKING. COMPETING MODELS ARE FROM SUZUKI (CHEAP PRICE TAG AGREED BUT NOT AT ALL SAFE CARS IN ANY RESPECT AS COMPARE TO HONDA JAZZ) OR IF TOYOTA LAUNCH ITS MODELS LIKE YARIS OR AYGO (ARE DEFINITELY WORTH CONSIDERING BUT I AM SURE TOYATA WILL BE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN HONDA IF NOT THERE MUST BE SOME COMPROMISE AT ENGINE OR CAR SPECIFICATIONS)........STRONGLY RECOMMENDED CAR; IF YOU INVEST ON IT INITIALLY MAY BE WITH A MORE PRICE TAG; IN LONG RUN IT WILL LAST LONG AND YOU WILL HAVE LESS DAMGEE OR REPAIR COST AND YOUR CHANCES OF BEING REMAIN ALIVE ARE MUCH HIGHER IN AN HEAD ON COLLISION HIGHWAY WITH THIS CAR THAN THE CARS WITH LOW EURO NCAP RATINGS. THANKS | Reply

It's a fine car just like Honda has been making them for years. But we need to fix the roads! The corrupt governments love to bribe the people with "you vote for me we will fix the road" schemes. Do you know how bad the roads and highways are? There is absolutely no maintenance whatsoever. These cars can last forever if you maintain them. Infrastructure needs to be improved badly! Lets bring petrol/electric hybrids to India. | Reply

Honda Jazz is a beautiful creation of Honda series, it is sleek and temptating. Its fabulous.I wish the price to be controlled in a Diesel version that will be more appealing. | Reply

7 lacs is ridiculosu for a hatchback in India.. Anything above a On road price of 6 lacs and Honda is killling the goose which will pave teh way for them in the Big Indian Small car market..I have been patiently waiting for this car as my 2nd car. But the momen i see it above 6 lacs , I am writing a cheque for the Swift which looks better VFM.. | Reply

Common undercurrent everywhere is that Jazz is Pricey. But Honda guys are not fool, their target buyers are niche rich class ladies who dont want to change gears often or let say ladies are not adept in changing gears with different speeds and at the same time dont want to go in big cars ( Honda Jazz is AT-Standard and is smooth transition for them from Corolla, City etc) . It is for them i guess otherwise there is no point in pricing it too high. | Reply

price is too high!! people will buy honda city instead of this... it has to be in the range of 5 lacs | Reply
  • Manish Samtaney (25 May 2009 02:01)
Honda needs to learn the lessons from the abia story...the hatch never took off and volumes are still lill..and then they launched a smaller engine to bring the price down...considering the Honda city starting price at 7.6L, jazz at 7 L will be a big mistake. Indian customer is price sensitive and second is more status consious. A price of 6 L for jazz seems fine and will it a success. Perhaps pricing for Hyundai i 20 is also on the higher side and product has failed to take the momentum. The value proposition is very important and cant be missed. if Jazz base model starts at 5.5-5.75 it will take off! | Reply

IMO, a hatch shouldnt be priced above 6.5 lacs for the top end model wid everything power operated, abs n airbags.......ne thing above 6.5 lacs means trouble for the model as one will add some more thousands n go for a sedan instead of a hatchback....HONDA IS A HONDA, BUT TODAY THE COMPETITIORS R NOT BUGGERS EITHER...... | Reply

If they are able to keep the cost to 6.25lac on the road... then I will go for it! | Reply
  • Rocky (21 May 2009 12:12)
Is that Honda strategy? Publish a higher price before the launch and on the launch day, mark it at 6L or something!Jazz is doomed at 7L!! Premium pricing is fine, but at this price point, it's not at all justified for hatchback. With only one Jazz variant, Linea and Grand Punto are looking more attaractive. Lets wait for June when Punto get launched! | Reply

People won't go for Jazz just because it ives 90bhp power as compared to 87bhp of swift, pricing is a major factor which will make people buy either Swift or Ritz.A hatch back in 7lacs is an expensive affair, even if it is fully loaded. | Reply

7 lakhs is expensive territory. I doubt if it will do well. a larger boot will always be welcome for most indians, also indians are largely a feudal culture where bigger is better - so sedans have that factor. | Reply

Honda will truly lose a lot of its Loyal Honda Lovers..... They will pay a heavy price for introducing a hatch back for 7 lacs..... This is a Pure Disaster for Honda. | Reply

Car Trade India has reported Honda's extermely well advised move to rationalise Jazz prices to Rs 4.5 Lacs onwards. This will boost their sales substantially for sure and do good by their loyal customers who have waited patiently for Jazz. Their earlier projected price of Rs 7 Lacs was exorbitant on reading which, I personally know 4 people who were seriously considering opting for the Fiat Grande Punto instead. | Reply

no doubt ,Honda is Honda. smooth powerful engine, beautiful interiors and exteriors , only issue is the price which is higher for a hatchback.i suggest they should come out with a diesel version, which will be a right launch for this recession period. | Reply

Is it the Ford way Honda is heading? Ford sold Ikon for upto 9 lakhs and later for half of it. The customers who bought earlier felt exploited, the brand Ikon lost resale value even below Maruti 800. Whatever they put into that Jazz, 7 lakhs for that car is exhorbitant by any standards. I wish Toyota's new baby against Jazz in Europe The Urban Cruiser is a better bet to wait but don't know it's same stuff which comes India or something else. | Reply
