 Small Cars of 2009

In India, Honda already enjoys a reputation for making reliable and refined cars that are built to last and frugal in nature. People have been eagerly waiting for a small car to roll out of the big H's stable and finally their prayers seem to have been answered. Based on the same platform as the new Honda City, the Jazz will be competing with the likes of the Skoda Fabia and the Hyundai i20. The Jazz is a premium hatchback and it is most likely to get a 1.2 litre 4-cylinder motor. Internationally, the 2009 Jazz was launched with a 1.3 litre and a 1.5 litre engine options, while in UK it makes do with a 1.2 litre engine.

Honda Jazz

Another reason for Honda to bring in the Jazz earlier than planned is the enticing 8 percent concession on excise duties on small cars in India. This also means that the Jazz could be competitively priced against its rivals. The Jazz's key features include space, refined motor, fuel efficiency and driving comfort. The exact engine options and specifications of the model coming to India are still speculated and Honda hasn't releases any technical details about the Jazz. The estimated launch date for the Jazz is expected to be sometime around June 2009 and it is expected to fall in the price bracket of Rs 5-7 lakh, starting from the base version to the top end variant.

I like the Honda Jazz very much and fallen in love at the first site. I would go for it because you do not purchase car everyday and I like Honda as a brand and name of international repute . I am going for the mode model and very shortly. | Reply

i have the teflon white JAzz. come on guys . Honda cannot be compared with other cars w.r.t quality and efficiency. its cost is high but it has already captured the market for Jazz. I fell in luv with Jazz while i was in japan and australia. its superb car and its meant for car lovers. Like when u buy appreals , u have so many range and it varies from ur pocket capacity . Similarly Jazz id premium hatch back car. I am very satisfied and this is my 2nd car after my civic sports | Reply

You talk so much about the brilliance of Jazz and spaciousness. But no one including the Auto magazine reviewers pointed out the problem with the so called rear magic seat - or they purposely and coneveniently ignored it. Actually the shape of the rear seat is such that it is most inconvenient for the third passenger who happens to sit in the middle. Only two people can comfortably sit at the rear. | Reply

For 8L, only morons will buy it. I bought top end Swift Diesel for 5.5L, which gives almost same driving pleasure, I save Rs 20 per litre on fuel, and get 10 km more...Do the Maths.... | Reply

It was so stupid to price a hatch back so high..I went in for a sedan instead of Jazz..after waiting for the car..It simply isn't worth the price..ppl call it refined..but i don't find it extremely refined..Hope Honda will stratergize itself to price better for the indian market in the future..I'm yet to see a Jazz on the road.. other than the ones test driven when i went for a test drive.. | Reply

Been waiting for this car since 2008, but price is too high for this hatch back, anything between 5.50 to 6.25 wold have been a better price, lack of varients (diesel), One will buy a City/Civic if the price tag is so high. Decided to buy Hyundai i10 at last. | Reply

If Honda launches it in the range of 6.2lacs..the car'll definately get a gr8 success.7.5l is going to be a heavy price for such a hatchback which does not even have alloys.in 6.2l it'll definately beat i20 coz of honda popularity.anyone would buy a fiat linea for 7.3lacs... | Reply

I've been waiting for over a year now for the Jazz, however after hearing about Honda's pricing i've decided to go in for the Fiat Grande Punto. Its a shame to see such a fine vehicle fail because of pricing issues. Honda wake up and get out of your offices where cooked up statistics dictate your pricing, look around and see what happened to the Chevrolet SRV, Scoda Fabia and the likes. | Reply
  • CoolBoy (05 June 2009 10:32)
It's definitely not going to be 7Lacs. If in 6.2L ex-showroom it includes ABS, Airbags and not to be forgotten a VTEC churning out 90 horses, I thinks its worth. I20 also is priced at 5.7L with a 80PS only | Reply

Hi Honda,7 lakhs for Honda jazz is too Costly and u will be able to sell only 1 or 2 in a month , unlike the swift which sells 7000 to 8000 in a month, If u want to become No 1Car Manufacturer in the world and want to beat toyota, Price this car between 4.5 to 5.5. | Reply

I wint sell in large numbers for the price of 7 lac as speculated. i was planning to buy one but now havw alternet plans. Ritz from maruti will be a better alternative. Indian buyer is price senditive and honda should consider this when deciding tha pricing of Honda Jazz | Reply

If Honda is tagged 7 Lakh it is not a choice for buyer as same version in other models is about 4 to 5 Lakh.most needed thing now in India is Automatic transmission many NRI could not drive manual cars and they are in search of Automatic. | Reply

Looks are stunning and along with the H factor, it can be expected to do lovely business... but all that will depend on the final price tag. Base model of 5.5L will be appropriate. | Reply
  • Kausar Kamal Khan (27 May 2009 01:17)
A hatchback with a price tag of 7L even from Honda or Toyota will be treated as Fiat 500. I know even at 7L they will do good business due to H factor but technicaaly it is not a good deal, I am waiting for Jazz but at 7L I will never go for it not because of budget but its not a good deal rather go for City, Linea or Optra. | Reply

Lookwise the Honda Jazz seems to be quite good. 1.2 Ltr petrol version with decent fuel economy should be priced between 4.35 lakhs to 5.50 lakhs ex-showroom price. this will definitely give a good competetion in hatchback segment. We expect pricing to be taken very good care of. | Reply
  • nirmal (22 May 2009 11:16)
It is not clear what features the Jazz is rolling out with. Is 7 L for the base model. If so, it is a HUGE premium for a car that is supposed to be getting excise advantages. The whole 1.2L engine logic is negated. At 7L at least it should have a 1.3 L engine. I will buy the Ritz Zxi rather. | Reply

Its time Indian Buyers should look more seriously for cars from Tata-FIAT stable...Vista, Linea, Punto, Palio, Indigo CS etc. offer excellent VFM. Makers like HONDA, Toyota etc. are just cheating, heavily overcharging NOT only initial price BUT also Cost of spares. Be India...can Japanese BUY foreign brands with economy in tuff days..? | Reply

Looks like Honda wants to give a boost to sales of it's competetors.Skoda is much bigger brand in Quality and Engineering . If they can sell their hatchback at 4.5-5.5, i think any other manufacturer can do the same in India. If honda just wants to make its presence felt in hatchback segment - than to focus on that segment requirements - then they are paying a much higher price for that. | Reply

to sell a hatch for the price of a saloon...and we are talking very good saloons like the linea, verna...looks very similiar to what skoda did...will honda suceed...or should they even suceed...in selling cars at a huge premium when the whole world is looking to sell cars and a huge discount...i think if honda positions the jazz at 7 lacs...please do not buy...such a good car...for such a bad price...unless u wanted to be taken for a ride | Reply

I just read in the TOI that the Jazz will be priced at 700,000 INR. Am just plain disappointed reading that.Honda CEO says he still expects the CITY to sell more numbers than the JAZZ and it not looking at a Volume Market.Mr. CEO - I feel with this price its going to be really tough for you to sell even a few hundred Jazz cars a month. Let us not even call Jazz a hatchback. A hatchback at 700,000 sounds ridiculous to me.You put in a thousand features of a sedan into the Jazz but with that price in the Indian Market you may never succeed. You will surely go the Fabia way. Try selling at 500,000 INR and see the difference for yourself. Thanks! | Reply

They could have simply launched the estate model of the Honda City. It has the right power, right size and hopefully the right price too. The small car market is becoming too overcrowded and most buyers are value conscious, so premium small cars are not expected to sell a lot. Instead Honda could have done well to bring in the FRV-diesel to India. | Reply
