Fiat Grande Punto - aggressively priced!

Fiat Grande Punto - aggressively priced!

We take a small look at the Grande Punto's price tag and how well it takes on the competition.

Pardon the extremely casual and prompt expression of what can only be described as superlative joy, but "WHAT"?!? We did say the Grande Punto would be priced somewhere in the Rs 5-6 lakh territory, but quite frankly and based on recent car launch trends we did expect Fiat India to do a big blunder and price the Grande Punto exorbitantly high. Well, Fiat, we are humbled. And overjoyed! For once, the Maruti Suzuki Swift has some real competition on its hands.

  Competition check: Grande Punto diesel

Let's start off with the excise special 1.2 FIRE Grande Punto. With a price tag of Rs 3.99 lakh this engine will be available with only an 'Active' variant. As far as other big hatches are concerned, the Indica Vista 1.2 Safire is from Rs 3.39-3.85 lakh, the Chevrolet U-VA is at Rs 3.87-5.07 lakh and the Hyundai i20 is between Rs 4.79-5.81 lakh. The freshly launched Ritz from Suzuki is priced between Rs 3.9-4.8 lakh while the ultra-premium Jazz with the 1.2i-VTEC engine is at Rs 6.98-7.33 lakh. The Jazz apart, Fiat has priced its small petrol warrior right in the meaty part of the 1.2 litre hatchback segment.

Moving on to the bigger 1.4 litre FIRE engine, it will be available in two variants - starting at Rs 4.66-5.01 lakh and another Rs 60,000 for the options pack on the Emotion variant. The only 'real' rival to the 1.4 Grande Punto is the Suzuki Swift - with its 1.3 litre petrol engined car costing anywhere between Rs 3.99-5.15 lakh. While the Getz Prime is also sold with a 1.3, it is a pretty old model now in light of the competition. Nonetheless it can be yours for Rs 4.09-4.59 lakh. Again, the Grande Puntp is bang in the middle of the competition's price range. The way we see it, Fiat has embarked on a two pronged attack - with the 1.2 Punto pulling away customers from the Indica Vista and i20 while the 1.4 Punto starts attacking the Swift and Ritz. Expect the Hyundai i10 Kappa to suffer slightly as well - especially as far as the top end versions are concerned owing to the Punto's superb space!

Honda Jazz

On the diesel front, the Punto costs between Rs 4.85-5.56 lakh and another Rs 60,000 more for the options pack on the Emotion variant. This should take on the Indica Vista Quadrajet head on with a tag of Rs 4.44-4.73 lakh. Maruti's Swift and Ritz diesel variants cost between Rs 4.65-5.01 lakh. While the Grande Punto is clearly more expensive than both Marutis, it has the advantage of a whole lot more space and fresher, cuter looks which increases exponentially with the options pack installed.

We haven't seen very aggressive pricing strategy in car launches in recent times but looks like Fiat has broken that norm and gone all ahead full! The Grande Punto is a nice car to drive - no matter whether you're behind the wheel of the petrol or the diesel variant. Expect some sales chart turn-arounds soon!

i have recently bought punto emotion pk petrol.the power, safety, comfort of the car is mind blowing.cars like swift,ritz,i20 have no comparison with punto to add icing on the cake is blue and me with command controlled music system with automatic climate control HVAC .but the biggest drawback is the servicing of car at tata dealership because they know nothing about the car i can safely say there is no service for grande punto .i think fiat has to step up the servicing of the car otherwise it will be a big failure for fiat once again in india | Reply

Mannu. Tata has taken up sales and service of all the Fiat cars. I faced no problem so far servicing is concerned. TATA is providing GOOD SERVICE. THNAKS TO TATA | Reply

wait until a part goes bad. anyone can wash and clean and change oil on a car, but when they need to keep expensive spares in stock, they just give up. | Reply

Is it just me or does everyone else feels that the space inside the i10 feels more roomier than the Punto ? I guess its because of the beige interiors. What do you think ? | Reply

Hi All,I have previously owned a Palio and it was close to 8 years before i sold it and bought the Grande Punto. Trust me, i checked out all the small cars, i hate Maruti for the toy cars they make - the ONLY advantage is the service network. I had checked out Ritz, A Star, i10, i20, Indica Vista, Indigo CS. None excited me as much as the Punto. The sleek curvaceous body blew me away - love at first sight. Now i have it and trust me, i am thanking my stars for my choice. The only hiccup is that i could not arrange an extra 60-70k for the Emotion Pack model. My next target is the Linea (ooooh). | Reply

Its Really a very good deal in Diesel Version.. Cooling is nice and the power too.. Nice one and car is available in less than 2 weeks time as compared to months for swift.. I wasn't able to drive punto aggresively but think Swift Diesel got more power as compared | Reply

Fiat Grande Punto is the one and only car which comes after hundreds of crash tests. So go ahead and buy the Grande Punto ..Why we bother about resale value if we are getting a strong vehocle which can safegurad us from accidents!!!!!! | Reply

Great Diesel price considering the petrol price is expected to go up again. My concern is after sales service, parts pricing and standing with Tata cab drivers while servicing my Punto ! Fiat is yet to prove its after sales service quality and parts affordability even though someone has commented that they have re-vamped their service facility due to Linea.I did visit a dealer for the Punto. The quality of sales staff is as poor as ever. How can Indica sales staff cater to a premium compact customer profile.Fiat should look at more ground realities while tying up with Tata. | Reply

Punto is a somewhat good proposition. Not a great. It would affect Maruti Swift for sure. But dimensionally Punto is too long (same as Indigo CS) and high on turning radius (5.4 metres !) I think Indica Vista Quadrajet or Indigo CS-Dicor would still be a better value for money. | Reply

I own a 3 month old Punto and can tell you first hand that there is a major issue with spare parts and trained technicians. Tata dealers do not carry even the most essential parts in stock and also, their technicians have no idea what they are doing. A rear door latch failed on my car and I had to wait 10 days to get it delivered and fitted on my car. Then a stupid glove compartment cover lock failed, it is still to arrive after 1 month. Then yesterday a wing mirror broke off and I was told that it will take 10 days to get that. All in all, its a good car, bad after sales issue. Tata dealers love the margins but will not invest in after sales. Its time FIAT ensured they do that. | Reply

the only comment that I have to give is,feat has to take more care on after sales service side.In India there is no doubt about their products but they have to face the competition only on after sales service. Now it seems fiet is trying to improve. | Reply

Punto is really excellent car and FIAT India has done a very good job by put on sale this great car and priced at very competitive. But service network and spare part is the problem.Fiat India should improve after sales service and availability of spare parts to catch the market. | Reply

A Lot of a car with a great price tag. Here in UK the model with 1.4L engine and all the basic options with CD player etc. cost £10K compared to similarly priced Jazz. With some of the pic of extras added (top of the range colour, ESP, cruise control, dual climate control, and a Dualogic semiautomatic gear shift) gets it up to £13.5K. As far as I can see, Fiat has done a great job in India by putting this car in with right price to compete. I really hope that Indian buyer will start considering the FIAT badge more seriously after this. | Reply

Punto is not doubt an international best seller car from Fiat. This will certainly impact the car market for i10,i120,Swift,Vista. Also i heard that Fiat has revamped their entire outdated service network before their launch of Linea clearly means " They will give everyone run for their money", not to forget Fiat is a well accalimed global brand. Now a days we (Indians) started thinking more international brands than Maruti and Hyundai ,As this is clearly evident with the increase in sale of Honda sedans, Skoda fabia and VW's Polo's interest in India launch by end of 2009. Overall Fiat is clearly in this competition. | Reply

Well, finally Fiat has done what was expected. They have been producing good cars but due to their internal issues they were having some or the other problems. Remember, after all Italians are the makers of Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Ferrari, Lamborghini etc which is not everyone's cup of tea. This time they have aggressively priced their Linea and Punto which are good value for money and seeing the sales of Linea, there is no doubt that Punto will give I20, Ritz, Swift, I10, Indica Vista etc run for their money. Honda Jazz is not worth buying as there is hardly any price diff between the City. Jazz is more expensive than the city in Thailand but Indian market is of course different and the same strategy wont work here.Maybe they come out with reducing the price of Jazz. A lot depends on FIAT/TATA sales and service network which will surely be a deciding factor. The crux is that with competitive pricing, good looks, many engine variants, the GRANDE PUNTO is here to stay. | Reply

Punto seems an excellent package but it remains to be seen whether it can match the Swift in terms of sales volumes. Swift still commands a huge value for money proportion with the same engine and a better service network. Above all it is much cheaper | Reply
