Fiat Grande Punto: Launch Preview

Vikram Gour             28 Apr 2009

Fiat Grande Punto

The Grande Punto from the Fiat stable is positioned as a large two box hatch. The car has been designed to represent three fundamental qualities, namely beauty, solidity and brilliance, all coupled into a terrific car that has quintessential Italian styling.

Fiat Grande Punto

Developed by Italdesign-Giugiaro along with the Fiat Style Centre, the Grande Punto stands out in the current automotive scene, not only for its size but also for the beauty of its modern elegant exterior lines which seem to be inspired by the sports cars of the 1950s and 1960s.

Ford Fiesta

Like the exterior, the interior of the Grande Punto carries forward the essence of Italian styling thanks to the quality of the materials used and the care that went into every detail. It is extremely roomy, with excellent front visibility, easy access and a large luggage compartment. Where quality is concerned, the Grande Punto is stylish and refined and comes with a great sense of solidity. What the customers get is a welcoming, plush and functional environment that is bound to excite.

Available in two body styles internationally, which includes a three door version and a five door version, the Grande Punto for India will be available only in the five door version. Trim levels are yet to be decided for the Indian market, but looking at the Linea, we can expect Fiat to bring in the Active, Dynamic and Emotion versions. The Sport version might have to wait!

Fiat Grande Punto

Safety has also occupied a very high pedestal in Fiat's planning of the Grande Punto. A multitude of crash tests and laborious hours of research have made it one of the safest compacts around. The Grande Punto also features a number of airbags (how many will the India spec one's get will be decided by how Fiat plans on pricing the car), three-point seat-belts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, five head-restraints and the FPS fire prevention system, all work together to make the Grande Punto a rather safe place to be.

For India the Grande Punto will be offered with two engines which include the 1.2 litre FIRE engine that produces 65 BHP and the 1.3 Multijet diesel that will be tuned to churn out 75BHP. 1.3 Multijet diesel is the same engine that does duty under the hood of the Maruti Suzuki Swift DDiS, Swift Dzire DDiS, Palio Multijet, Indica Vista, Fiat 500 and the Fiat Linea-just that the engine has different states of tuning, depending on the car. It's an award winning engine and therefore its popularity, even with other manufacturers.

Overall, the Grande Punto is an extremely enjoyable car and there is something in it for everyone, be it the daily commuter or the motoring enthusiast, the Punto has been built to feed that desire. Incidentally, the Grande Punto shares its platform with the Fiat Linea and this aspect also aids in the manufacturing process as both cars will be built side by side at Fiat's Ranjangaon facility.

Hi, i am planning to buy my dream car soon, And punto 1.2 Emotion and 1.4 Emotion are top of my list. Next i got Hyundai 120, Skoda Fabia in my list. Please let me know the difference. Because the users of the car can give me good guidelines. | Reply

Guys!!! Never ever go in for any fiat cars for the reasons that, the dealers are far off from any part of the city. Besides, Tata motors are least bothered about fiat customers and the company doesnt seem to be bothered about spares. In the long run, fiat owners are at risk of having a real hard time with repair stuff. | Reply

One of the most important things to consider while buying a car in India is the resale value. In my opinion Fiat and Tata will certainly lose out to Maruti and Hyundai on this factor. | Reply

between swift,i20,punto if you are looking for petrol car go for swift or i20 which are fuel effecient and are good for city driving.punto petrol feels little underpowered and it is not much fuel effecient.as the two.if looking for diesel go for punto as swift, vista, punto, palio, ritz all have the same 1.3 fiat multijet which is powerful .but many people say it works good in maruti.i dont feel so but only punto diesel makes little noise.but with features like blue and me etc .punto makes great sense. And with colobration with tata after sales service will be good. | Reply

Fiat should just get there basics of marketing and positioning the product right for the Indian market and it can be the best car. I can tell from my experience as I have driven the Uno as well as Sienna | Reply

Everything is fine about PUNTO but network..?? 1.2 65 Bhp too less. i10, A-Star etc. deliver more punch.Besides, Punto has just 1 side reverse gear lamp. Only 1 reverse gear lamp, that too placed very low. Very risky in "Unorganized" Indian traffic and cramped parking | Reply

All blaming for the service of FIAT should be surprised that even with no dealership in our city, we are getting far more better service through a TATA service center with no problems of spares. We have been using the old Palio (had some problems at that time) but now, we have been using the Palio Stile since last year and its a great international car with mileage of 18 (Multijet Diesel). As far as power is concerned, only a Fiat user will know what a Fiat is and comparing it (makers of Ferrari) with brands like Hyundai and Maruti is just an insult to FIAT.We are waiting desperately for the Grande Punto and there is no doubt that FIAT is soon to lead Indian roads with the colaboration with TATA. | Reply
  • Nikhil (18 May 2009 22:00)
Another nice car, but will be a sure flop because of poor advertisements and worsts service. Fiat still dont know how to do the marketing, you please learn that from Maruthi and Hyundai. Must need 15 plus milage to hit Indian market and cost less than 5 lakhs. Can be successful if marketed properly . | Reply

i happen to sit in the punto in an italian exhibition held in mumbai...to my surprise...there was absolutely no headroom for a six footer like me...to make things worse...the height adjustment in the seat was also missing...overall it killed the expectations that i had considering that the seating position is such a basic yet very critical part...coming from a Italdesign-Giugiaro! | Reply
  • ks (15 May 2009 10:44)
Unless FIAT improves the Service drastically, any model by them may not succeed in India. The best service providers at proxity to the place of owner are Maruti ns Huyndai only and none else can match them, though they are also not cheaper for spares and services. we say they are not costly as we compare with too much costly firms like Honda, Skoda | Reply
  • Naren (11 May 2009 15:45)
I would like to tell Kunal (30 April 2009 22:48:59) that do not compare this car to Jazz. The Jazz is almost 1.5 lacs costlier than Punto. Also, Honda cars are always overpriced in India. See the new City...is that car wort 10 lacs? with hardly any equipment? The Grande Punto is the best looking hatch. The Palio even today looks amazing. Palio was launched ahead of its times in India | Reply
  • Najm (11 May 2009 15:26)
Fiat service is still absolute dismall. No improvement even after tie up with TATA. Any Fiat buyer has to take the good (the car) and the bad (service) into his stride. | Reply

How is the seating level in Punto? At the Auto Expo I had found it to be low with difficulty in getting in and out. Hope FIAT is able to look into this aspect. All other features are good. | Reply

Jaago Grahak Jaago..!! Its time Tata-FIAT cars should be looked more seriousely. Vista, Palio, Linea, Indigo CS, Punto etc. are excellent VFM. However, Honda, Toyota, GM etc. Cars are just too much over-priced. spares of These Foriegn Cars are also too much expensive. Be India...Can Japanese BUY Indian or any other brands, with nation in tuff stage...American ...GM are going burst...where will you get spares..?? | Reply
