India's Best Cars Under Rs 10 Lakh

Best Entry Level Hatch

Best-entry-hatch-Tata-Nano

This may well be the hottest volume-churning segment in the country right now, and for good reason. The need for safe and sheltered personal mobility is rising, but spenders are still keeping their purse strings tight - and this segment works perfectly in their favour. Most of the cars here are rehashed versions of old international cars, but that doesn't take anything away from their usability and practicality, be it small towns or bustling metros.

Tata Nano

It all began with skepticism, but all that was converted quickly into a large surprise when the Tata Nano was launched. Aiming straight for the erstwhile lowest-cost-car, the Maruti 800, the Nano gives so much more for so much less! Undoubtedly the current best in what is the biggest segment of all - the Nano comes across as a delightful package with a powertrain well equipped to battle the daily city grind. Add to that stunning looks and brilliant packaging that has liberated oodles of space and you know the Nano deserves all the attention it has amassed in the past few years leading up to its launch.

The only real foreseeable problem with the Nano is its availability. While you may not be able to walk into a Tata Motors showroom and buy one like you would any other car, the Nano is worth going through the lottery system and the subsequent wait thereafter in our opinion. And if that wasn't enough, the Rs 1 lakh base price at which it is available simply seals the deal. By the way, for all you sceptics out there who thought a low-cost car could never be safely built, the Nano has even passed European crash tests with flying colours! Even more reason for urban car users to join the Nano bandwagon along with the rest of the country.

One should wait and see even if the future Nano is going to be more costlier than the entry price. As experienced in Indica, TATA may have to do lot of modifications/corrections to overcome the shortcomings and this will cost money. I predict, the Nano modified devoid of the shortcomings, may be after an year or so, may cost not less than Rs. 1.5 lakhs and M800, the proven one, may be further reduced to less than Rs. 2 lakhs to attract the public. We should wait and see till then. | Reply

Let it come into the market first. The best judges would be the mass that is called the middle class. If it passes their road tests, it is the best car for India. | Reply

I am not sure abt that... bcoz Tata Nano was called a redesigned golf cart... and not to forget, it doesn't pass the western safety standards | Reply

I think Tata should go ahead and field Nano hibrid/battery in market. This should give an edge for competiion from Maruti 800 and enhance eco-friendly image. | Reply

After much deliberation I was looking forward to owning one but reading the recent newspaper report about the car catching fire really increases my scepticism about the safety of this car | Reply

Although I havent driven a nano, I would certainly not even want to drive it. Someone who can afford to cough up 1.20 lacs for a car like nano would also be able to cough up 2 lac for a maruti 800 or alto. Tata motors seems to have not done enough market research while making the car, its only the passion that made this car available in the market. But thats not enough. I seriously doubt the comfort and safety level of this car, as well as the styling. In a city like Delhi, where every 9 car out of 10 has a body dent I would not risk my life. Nor would I let go off my style and freedom quotient if I am riding a bike. So who is being targetted here? A middle class family with 3-4 members? Maybe this family can also afford an alto with some more money, as I said earlier. I may sound very unIndian and ungrateful, but trust me, I would be among the happiest on earth if this car gets overwhelming response. | Reply

I would suggest that please take a test drive of the Car, and sit in the back seat and see the space and especially the leg space. I have driven the car and was very happy with the output. | Reply

Very strange logic in the comment. If one can cough up 1.20 lac, he could also cough up 2 lac. Why stop that logic at 2 lac? Extend it till you read a Mercedes. It didn't strike the gentleman that the 1.20 lac may be coughed up by someone whose original budget may have bee in the range around Rs 60,000. The nine out of 10 dented cars include luxury cars. Therefore, the only concern is safety. Nano even clearing international crash tests, leaves safety concerns only for the uninformed. I drive a Safari, but went to check Nano out of curiosity. I found it very comfortable, with very good rear seat leg spacer. I am 5 ft 11 inches tall. We must expect some teething problems in new products, but this brilliant product must be accorded its due acknowledgment! | Reply
