A look at Vijay Mallya's car collection

Shrabani Das 11 Nov 2009

Ensign-Formula-1

Ensign Formula 1

This particular car was built for the 1977 season and raced by Patrick Tombay. The following year, the car was rented to drivers due to lack of sponsors for the team and was driven by Jackie Ickx, Nelson Piquet (his first drive in an F1), and Derick Daly (who also drove the car in the 1979 Belgium GP).

The car was purchased by Mr. Vijay Mallya early in the '80s and driven by him to wins in the 1981-1982 Indian G.P. and has remained as part of his collection since then.

Dr Vijay.Mallya is really the rarest of rare individuals who although not ranked amongst the World's top 100 billionaires would definitely make some "Super Billionaires" envy his life-style and zest for living. "You only live once, whether a Billionaire, millionaire or a pauper". | Reply

Truly an admirable man with class and style. Its very rare to find rich people flaunt their welath so publicly. Even if you do find, viz. Mukesh Ambani, you will hardly find biggies like him spending at times, for the public/nation's interests. He has visibly transformed Bangalore's skyline with the UB City. I wonder if there are any owner's of F1 Teams who dont have a race track in their home country! This proves his tastes in life. Go Mallya! We are proud of you.. and let alone these sleazy jealous saddist mongers rot in their hole who always see that the glass is half-empty!As to these rotten uninvited neighbour morons, reminds me of the SMS joke: "Therez no point mud-fighting with a Pig.. More you fight, later you realize that while you are desperately fighting it out.. it actually is enjoying the crass!" | Reply

Sri (11 December 2009 03:34) Reply to sachin
Well, really depends on what you term 'better'. Some people prefer to lead more sedate lifestyles, and that is 'better' for them, while some, like Vijay Mallya prefer to show it off and live it to the fullest, and that is what people admire about him. He isn't afraid of what the public says about his display of wealth. He just goes out there and does it. What is the point of making money if you don't spend it? | Reply

Rafay, I am proud to be Pakistani as well. There are plenty of things that Pakistan has to be proud of, but a lot of things in the opposite direction as well. I am surprised at all the "literate" Indians getting on such an offensive about this comment. I have been to India several times and it is an amazing place. I was really welcomed with a lot of affection by the people there; as are the people of India when they come to our country. A few bad apples spoil the whole apple pie. So lets stop the hate and show some love. Vijay Malliya is truely a colorful character and has some really good traits. People show learn from him and enjoy life more. | Reply

Pakistan is stated to be at par with Somalia as one nation is run by pirates who hijack ships to harbor money while the earlier which is ruled by goons and swindlers is known for using its well trained( well-illiterate) people to kill others on the name of jehad. When Mr. Mallya took over the empire owing to his father's untimely demise, there were a lot of people who said that this is the end of the UB Group. However, he has come out a winner in almost everything that he has laid his hands on. He has wealth, he has expensive tastes and likes to flaunt it. Nothing wrong about it. He has earned the mantle of The Kingfisher. | Reply

Sri (11 December 2009 03:39) Reply to Abhinav
True. But I believe the point of this article was to showcase cars owned by him that are a tribute to their respective lineages and legacies. Cars like the Maybach, and the Flying Spur, granted, are fabulous, but they are hardly exclusive. Anyone with enough money to throw around can buy one, they aren't exclusive, which is why they weren't on this list. | Reply

He is enjoying the fruits of liquor business . Common man and the poor contributes for his success by spending bulk of their daily earnings. So he earns and spends for his affluent life style. Who can stop him? And we are not going to have another Mahatma Gandhi to fight for "prohibition" !! | Reply
Eddy (30 November 2009 04:39) Reply to MPR Panicker
He is an entrepeneur who should be applauded. His business happens to be liquor. Liquor consumed in excess, like paani puris, is bad for health. It is good that he has assembled a car collection that rivals many of the private collections in the west. Car collections need constant expert maintenance that only those with disposable income can afford. It provides pride of ownership. Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld are two comedians here in U.S. who have extensive personal car collections. The late Shah of Iran was another car aficiando but the mullahs let his collection go to ruin. President Brezhnev also collected cars but rarely drove them himself. | Reply
