Bajaj Pulsar 135 Special Coverage

Tripping the light fantastic with Rajiv Bajaj

Adil Jal Darukhanawala     9 Dec 2009

Buying a car? Get Best Deal

Rajiv Bajaj

Adil Jal Darukhanawala speaks to Bajaj Auto chief Rajiv Bajaj on the new Pulsar 135 LS.

If I had to say that the term Mr Biking rests well and perfectly on the able shoulders of Rajiv Bajaj, it would only be his detractors who would murmur under their breath but agree to this statement with their silence sounding loud in affirmation.

The Pulsar range has been Rajiv's creation right through and this machine came in at a time when the eponymous firm was almost on its last legs and about to go under the weight of its archaic scooters well past their sell-by dates. That he fought within and changed the company's product mix is something that posterity will recall for all time but that is another story altogether.

It is not that Rajiv is a reticent man but just that he prefers the company of doers and is happiest when he is planning, strategizing, or simply conceptualizing newer ways and means to push the motorcycling mantra across the spectrum. He is clearly fixated on the fact that leaving Honda and Yamaha as the only two top Japanese brands capable of churning out small capacity motorcycle designs, he is arming Bajaj Auto to rival these two in not just technological terms but also in processes, systems and more importantly in getting the job done even more efficiently and at a lower cost proposition.

Discussing the new Pulsar LS, I asked Rajiv how the new bike would be looked at and received in the market and he was clear about where he wanted the Pulsar brand to progress. "We are clearly of the opinion that we think first of the strategy and then the product," he told me a couple of days before ZigWheels got the chance to get astride the baby Pulsar first. "To bring excitement even lower down the scale but without diluting any brand strengths was what prompted us to make this Light Sports bike and I am sure that it will carry on the Pulsar family's successful run. In fact our product and brand differentiation is at the core of our marketing and product planning efforts and we didn't want to do something half-hearted and end up with a Stunner type of vehicle."

And sure enough one just can't but agree that there are no half-measures with the all-new baby Pulsar. Pint-sized it might be in make-up but when it comes to delivering performance it is truly the epitome of the lion-heart!

Bajaj is one of the best motorcycle companies who has come up with its own technology the pulsar brand unlike herohonda who uses honda's technology.now herohonda doesnot have any new model. thay are just adding some extra fittings to its older versions. best of luck for rajiv n bajaj. | Reply

See guys Pulsar 135 LS is receiving good response company has already sold 28000 units in first full month of launch and its planning to make it 40000 units from March which itself exceeds what they set for the full year 30000 units per month target. So Just wait and see how much time Bajaj will take to make 3.0 Lakhs motorcycle per month. I hope that will happen from April 2010 itself. Lets wait | Reply

I hope what Mr.Rajeev Bajaj is thinking is about bringing some change in the market from his own brand like discover Dtsi-135,,which has got a lot of success in the auto two wheeler market in India as well in african countries for e.g Bajaj has its own market for Boxer in African countries where as in India it is not preferred by people.I think this this must be a right time to entry in the other countries with this model and then introduces other models of Pulsar like 150cc,180cc,220cc in the African countries which has a large volume of sales for Indian Bikes.I hope this is a right decision on export point off view... | Reply

I find Rajiv-Bajaj moving in the reverse direction when all the AutoCompanies are moving in the forward direction, even TVS is going positive to be a big global player. This Local company should learn from the Tata-Motors which has given India's image a big boost by launching "Tata-Nano" all this years, Rajiv was bragging of launching a new "Mini car" but now he has fallen back which is givingBajaj image a negative boost, peoplesay Bajaj is smaller player in the auto industry and does not dream to grow big as an auto giant.Like the Mahindra's and the Tata's. | Reply
