Chevrolet Beat

Chevrolet beat

In India by: Mid 2009

Will cost: Rs 3 lakh onwards

The Beat was introduced as a concept at the 2007 New York International Auto Show, and can be seen as an evolution of GM's current international small car, the Spark (known as the Matiz around the world).

Designed in South Korea and powered by a 1.2- litre turbocharged petrol engine, the Beat paves the way for a new generation small cars and might just be the new affordable-small-peppy car for young India. Although the production version will differ a lot from the radical concept seen in pictures, one can expect the baby Chevy to change GM's fortunes in India.

Pl do not opt for beat at any cost, i own one and belive me the car has serious flaw, you cant over take any other vehicle even on a marginal slope, it needs second gear and you push hard on accelerator hoping that no other vehicle comes from opposite side. And forget using 4 th or 5th hear on hilly terrain | Reply

chevy beat can be considered as the most unique of all the current models in india. an integrated spoiler is one of the standard features of the car that i like most with the best installed centerlink and idler arm at the same time. | Reply

HiI liked Chevy beat very much and asked for test drive. The car that came for test drive CAUGHT FIRE AND WHOLE NEW CAR - CHEVROLET BEAT RED COLOR BURNT DOWN TO SCRAP IN FEW MINUTES. I was so scared to see this - as I was just about to get in for test drive. Who takes responsibility for this? I wrote to GM in India and US but no response. Moreover they removed the car from site quickly before this news could be covered by media. If you still want to buy it - buy at your own risk. It has some manufacturing / enginneering defect perhaps. Why is GM not responding? | Reply

Hi I have the video as well as email form GM Chevrolet itself, confirming the car mishap. I am waiting for GM to decide what they think of this technical/ manufacturing defect in their car. And you guys dont need to tell me what it was - better mind your defected cars.

Hi, I bought a Beat LT in march. Its a really gud investment for a car lover. After a verry small drawbacks that can be ignored its a complete package. U will get more than what u expect. Its get a little heavy while AC is running but not a problem. You cant get a better car in this range with this kind of performance ,looks ,comfort and fearures that Beat gives u.Mileage: i got minimum: 11 and maximum till now is 14 kmpl. It depends a lot on traffice and ur driving style.

My experience with a beat test drive.Pros:1) Great looks and styling.2) New and innovative instrument cluster.3) Low turning radius.4) Value for money.5) Great A/CCons:1) Humming noise inside cabin at higher speeds.2) Grumpy gear, does not feel as smooth as I10 or Wagon R.3) Engine looses power when A/C is turned on.4) Rear suspensions are a little on the stiffer side.5) The Engine been a 1199cc is not as responsive like a Swift or I10.6) Hydraulic Power steering system is not as good as that of I10 or Swift (Electronic Power Steering).7) Smaller rear windows makes it difficult for the passengers at rear to see the road.8) Very small boot like a A-Star. | Reply

yes its true and it is underpowered too. its 1199 cc engine can compete only with 1000 cc engines of other makes like swift, ritz and i10.....only beat ps and ls variants are vfm, not the LT, if you have plan to buy LT, simply go for ritz or i10 | Reply

dear deepak, i own a ritz and since January i was reading and searching for beat and was almost final to buy one, when i went to see it in march i was disappointed to feel its underpowered engine, it looks impressive but its not built upto compete with 1200 cc segment of cars, when i tested k series engine of ritz, i instantly booked one, the beat in nowhere near to ritz and swift believe me, and yes i10 gives similar performance as ritz gives, very responsive car, mileage of beat is 11 - 12 kmpl in city and ritz and i10 almost gives 14 kmpl in city bumper to bumper traffic.......i m not a maruti or hyundai guy please its my own judgement, because one day i was a die hard fan of beat but after driving it became a last option for me, dont invest on looks guys invest on a durable car on which you can rely upon and dont regret in future after facing GM's A.s.s

The company should increase the speedometer limit of 180 kms to 200 kms. Maruti Alto has 45 bhp and has 180 speedometer limit and Chevy Beat has 80 bhp so it should increase it. My 2 friends rejected the beat just for this small reason and purchased another car. | Reply

dear himanshu, there is no need to exceed the speedo limit to 200 beacause beat cannot even think to go beyond 155 kmph, i almost felt the car screaming for life at 140 kmph, i dont advice to run it at 150 even due to its pathetic performance, i dont know what kind of racing dna beat has, so sluggish and poor car | Reply

Boot space should be a concern if 4 people are travelling with lots of big bags..Beat has a provision of 60:40 rear seat ration..where you can completely fold 1 side of the rear seat to accomodate more luggage. This option is not there in i10. Ritz probably has it too. | Reply

hey arun congrats for getting your dream car.i also planning to buy chevvy beat.would u plz tell me the pros and cons of the car.i am little bit concerned over its boot space and mileage on city roads. | Reply

@ abhishek, so far i've found m fully satisfied with d car n if u take my advice d car is jus wonderful concerning its luks, space, design n everythn. N i wud recommend u to buy the LS model cuz it doesnt hav a roofrail which is present in the top end model n gives it a vintage luk, i mean it jus spoils d sporty luk of d car. Also to mention is dat LS model does not hav a preinstalled music system which u can buy n get fitted 4m a retailer for jus 15000 n it'd giv u a bettr music experience...u get d best n u save around 40000. | Reply

I dont think cost of spares should be a concern as it will be in the same leage as I10 or ritz. Chevy does have a low priced car like Spark which is selling well and has low manitenance cost and low spare part cost. | Reply
  • Sidhu (11 January 2010 11:20)
Extremely expensive spares clubbed with their shortage, and a limited number of service stations.I own an optra and the paid service costs 10,000 upwards everytime | Reply
Shaan (30 January 2010 13:42) Reply to Sidhu
Please dont compare Optra with Beat..there is no match. | Reply

the car we see here is US model. The indian one is slightly upgradded one with better ground clearance. Not sure about performance. Also spares are going to be very costly. | Reply

I own a Beat. It is a lovely car. Good to drive around, good spead, manuevaraibility is good. I think it certainly is a better buy then Ritz, punto 1.2, fabia 1.2 which is v. expensive. Only i10 can be a good match to Beat but it doesnt come close to Beat in looks. | Reply
